How to Claim an Existing NYS Cosmetology License
Claiming links an existing or migrated DOS record to the NYBE account. It is not a new license application and does not have a government fee.
Search applications for “Cosmetology”
Inside NYBE, open Search Applications and enter Cosmetology.
Open the correct operator result
Do not choose esthetics, nail specialty, natural hair styling, waxing or Appearance Enhancement Business by mistake.
Select Claim Online
Scroll to the existing-license section and begin the claim.
Select your individual profile
Choose the listed name. Use “My name is not listed” only when a correct individual profile needs to be created.
Match the identity record
Enter the first and last name, SSN or FEIN field when requested, date of birth and address exactly as stored by DOS.
Validate the address
Review the USPS-standardized option and the address you entered, then select the accurate version.
Enter the License ID or Application ID
Recheck every character before continuing to the identity screening question.
Review, affirm and submit
Confirm the displayed license, accept the affirmation and submit the claim. The record should then become available for renewal or amendment.

Should You Renew Online or Use DOS-1404?
DOS broadly directs Appearance Enhancement licensees to renew online. The current cosmetology page also states that paper applications are being accepted. Online is the normal and faster route; paper should be used only when the current DOS page, renewal notice or Licensing Services instructions support it.

When an old license may require examination again

DOS requires these corrections through a separate amendment. The renewal form and online renewal should not be used to silently replace inaccurate licensing information.
