Virginia’s official agency is the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology within DPOR. Prov has administered the Board’s NIC examinations since January 1, 2025.

Virginia Cosmetology License Requirements in 2026
Virginia’s current cosmetology curriculum uses a minimum of 1,000 hours. Transition deadlines still matter for students enrolled under older approved programs.

DPOR Cosmetology License Renewal: Virginia Deadline, Fee and Expired Status
Every two years
The license expires two years from the last day of the month in which it was issued.
$120 renewal
The current Virginia regulation lists a $120 cosmetologist renewal fee. Effective July 1, 2026, certain transactions also include a separate $7.25-per-year technology fee.
Stop at expiration
Virginia says you cannot continue practicing after the license expires, even during the period in which ordinary renewal may still be accepted.
