PA Cosmetology License Renewal: PALS, $97 Fee & Deadlines

Pennsylvania PALS renewal guide • verified September 28, 2026

Renew a Pennsylvania Cosmetology License Without Guessing the Deadline

Start with the expiration date shown on your own Pennsylvania license record. Cosmetologist licenses expire on January 31, but Pennsylvania assigns cosmetologists to either an odd-year or even-year renewal cycle.

The current biennial cosmetologist renewal fee is $97, and Pennsylvania lists no routine continuing-education requirement for this license.

Quick Answer: How to Renew a PA Cosmetology License

Check the exact expiration date in your official Pennsylvania record, sign in to the PALS account already connected to your license, open the cosmetologist credential under Professional License Details, use the renewal action shown for that record, review your contact information and renewal questions, pay the amount shown in PALS, save the confirmation, and then verify that the public license record updates.

Do not assume 2026 is your renewal year. A Pennsylvania cosmetologist may have a January 31 expiration in an odd-numbered or even-numbered year. As of September 28, 2026, a record that expired January 31, 2026 is already past its deadline, while an odd-year record may show January 31, 2027.

First, Find the Expiration Year on Your Own License

Pennsylvania does not place every cosmetologist in the same renewal year. The State Board of Cosmetology says cosmetologist licenses expire January 31 in either an odd-numbered or an even-numbered year. Your license record—not another licensee’s date—controls what you should do.

Future January 31 date

Your license may still be current. Keep your PALS email and mailing address up to date and use the renewal action when it becomes available for your cycle.

Expired under 5 years

The Board directs licensees in this category to use the Reactivate action in PALS rather than treating the transaction as an ordinary on-time renewal.

Not current 5+ years

Pennsylvania regulation requires reexamination before renewal when the cosmetology license has been expired or in escrow for at least five years.

Fast verification: use the official public license search to confirm the license number, credential type, status and exact expiration date before paying. Our separate Pennsylvania cosmetology license verification guide explains the lookup process.

How to Renew a Pennsylvania Cosmetology License Online in PALS

Use the existing PALS account connected to your credential. Avoid creating duplicate accounts simply because you cannot immediately see the license.

Verify the license before signing in

Confirm the cosmetologist license number, current status and January 31 expiration year in Pennsylvania’s official record.

Open the official PALS portal

Go directly to Pennsylvania’s licensing system at PALS. Do not submit renewal payment through an unofficial license-help site.

Sign in to the account already linked to the license

Use account recovery or PALS support if necessary. A second profile can make it harder to find the existing credential.

Locate Professional License Details

Open the correct cosmetologist record. Make sure you are not selecting a salon, teacher, esthetician, nail technician or another license type.

Use the action shown for that record

Select Renew when your current-cycle license is eligible. If the license is already expired and under the Board’s reactivation route, use Reactivate when PALS displays it.

Review your email and mailing address

Renewal notices go to the latest email address reported to the Board. Pennsylvania also warns that the Postal Service does not forward licenses, so a correct mailing address matters.

Answer the renewal questions and upload anything requested

Read the application carefully. If PALS requests supporting evidence, use complete, readable documents and keep your submission confirmation.

Review the amount and submit payment

The currently published cosmetologist renewal fee is $97. Always review the final amount and transaction details in PALS before paying.

Save proof and verify the updated license

Keep the receipt or confirmation number, then check the official public record. A payment receipt is useful evidence of a transaction, but the live licensing record is the better place to confirm current status.

PA Cosmetology Renewal Fees

The $97 amount applies to ordinary biennial cosmetologist renewal. Other credentials regulated by the Cosmetology Board use different fees and renewal groups.

CredentialCurrent renewal feePublished expiration group
Cosmetologist$97January 31 in the odd or even year shown on the individual license
Esthetician$97January 31 of odd-numbered years
Nail Technician$97January 31 of even-numbered years
Cosmetology / Esthetician / Nail Technology Teacher$135January 31 of even-numbered years
Cosmetology / Nail Technology / Esthetician Salon$144January 31 of odd-numbered years
Cosmetology School$315January 31 of even-numbered years

Fees can change. Use Pennsylvania’s current renewal page and the amount displayed in PALS before submitting a transaction.

Does Pennsylvania Require Continuing Education for Cosmetology Renewal?

No routine cosmetologist CE is currently listed. Pennsylvania’s cosmetologist licensure snapshot states that there is no continuing-education requirement for licensure and lists the $97 biennial renewal fee.

You should not buy a private “mandatory PA cosmetology renewal class” merely because it is marketed as necessary for renewal. If your individual case is subject to a Board order or another specific requirement, follow the instructions issued for that case rather than relying on the routine renewal rule.

If Your Pennsylvania Cosmetology License Is Expired

The correct path changes with the length of time the license has not been current.

Expired less than 5 years

Reactivate through PALS

The Board instructs licensees to sign in to PALS, locate the license number, use the green pencil icon and choose Reactivate. Follow the prompts and the amount shown for the specific record.

After successful reactivation, Pennsylvania says to allow about 7–10 business days for the renewed license to arrive by mail. Keep the mailing address current because licenses are not forwarded by the Postal Service.

Expired or in escrow 5+ years

Reexamination applies

49 Pa. Code § 7.45 states that a cosmetologist license expired or in escrow for at least five years requires reexamination before a renewal application is submitted.

Use the current Board and Pearson VUE instructions for the applicable examination and reinstatement process rather than attempting an ordinary $97 renewal first.

Do not practice on an expired credential. Verify that Pennsylvania shows the license in the proper current status before resuming services that require licensure.

Five-Year Rule: When Reexamination Is Required

Pennsylvania’s regulation uses a clear threshold: a cosmetology teacher, limited-practice teacher, cosmetologist, esthetician or nail technician license that has been expired or in escrow for at least five years must satisfy the reexamination requirement before renewal.

Confirm the exact last-current date

Use the official license record and PALS account information rather than estimating from memory.

Read the current reinstatement instructions

Examination administration and forms can change. Use the Board’s current renewal page and its Pearson VUE examination link for the active process.

Complete the examination route before ordinary renewal

Follow the current eligibility, scheduling, payment and testing instructions issued for the reinstatement process.

Verify the restored license after completion

Do not treat an exam appointment, payment or old license card as proof that the credential has returned to active status.

Read Pennsylvania Code Chapter 7 for the current regulatory text.

What to Do After You Submit the Renewal

1. Save

Keep the transaction record

Save the confirmation, payment receipt and any uploaded-file confirmation so you can identify the transaction if support is needed.

2. Watch

Check PALS messages and email

If Pennsylvania requests another document or clarification, respond through the channel stated in the notice rather than filing a duplicate renewal.

3. Verify

Recheck the public license

Confirm that the status and expiration date have actually updated. This is especially important before returning to work after an expired-license reactivation.

Cosmetologist Renewal Is Not the Same as Every Beauty License

This page focuses on an individual Pennsylvania Cosmetologist credential. Do not apply the $97 fee or odd/even-year rule blindly to every Board credential.

  • Estheticians: $97 renewal; the Board lists January 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • Nail Technicians: $97 renewal; January 31 of even-numbered years.
  • Teachers: $135 renewal; January 31 of even-numbered years.
  • Cosmetology and limited-practice salons: $144 renewal; January 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • Cosmetology schools: $315 renewal; January 31 of even-numbered years.
  • Barbers: handled by the separate Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners, so do not use cosmetology renewal instructions for a barber credential.

For initial licensing, reciprocity and broader credential requirements, use our Pennsylvania cosmetology license guide.

Natural Hair Braiding Licenses Are No Longer Renewed in Pennsylvania

Act 100 of 2024 removed Pennsylvania’s licensing requirement for natural hair braiders, natural hair braider teachers and natural hair braiding salons. The State Board of Cosmetology says it no longer accepts initial applications, renewals, reactivations or changes for those former license types.

Scope still matters. Deregulation of natural hair braiding does not automatically authorize services that remain within another regulated cosmetology, esthetics, nail or barbering scope.

Before You Pay: Verify the Record One Last Time

Use your own PALS expiration date and credential type to choose the correct route. For a normal current-cycle cosmetologist renewal, the published biennial fee is $97 and routine CE is not required. If the license is already expired, switch from renewal thinking to the applicable reactivation or five-year examination route.
