Kansas Cosmetology Board 2026: Renew & Verify

Kansas license help • verified August 4, 2026 • independent guide

Use the Correct Kansas License, Renewal or Verification Path

Verify a practitioner or establishment, renew a personal license, complete the mandatory renewal examination, recover portal access, transfer an out-of-state credential or prepare a new beauty establishment for inspection.

Kansas practitioner licenses use a biennial cycle, while establishment licenses renew annually. The exact expiration date, filing window and work restriction depend on the credential shown in the official Board record.

Quick Answer: Verification, Login and Payment Are Separate Actions

Check legal status

License Verification

Search a practitioner or establishment and confirm the license type, status, issue date, expiration and physical location.

Manage a credential

Licensing Portal

Use the portal for account access and supported online actions. First-time users normally begin with Forgot Password.

Pay for a form

Payment Portal

A payment receipt does not replace the application. Record the Order ID on the correct signed form and submit that form separately.

Current address: Kansas Board of Cosmetology, 2420 NW Button Road, Topeka, KS 66618. Do not mail a form to the former SW Jackson Street address merely because it appears in an old search result or saved PDF.

Kansas License Task Helper

Choose the situation that matches your goal. This helper does not access Board data or collect personal information.

Choose a task to see the safest starting route.

Renewal Fee and Work-Status Helper

Choose the credential and timing. Always confirm the exact expiration date in the official lookup before paying.

Select both fields to see the likely path.

Current processing guidance versus older PDFs

Submission Current planning time When to follow up
General licensing submission Allow at least 15 business days. Check public status before sending another email or voicemail.
New establishment Plan at least three weeks for processing and compliance inspection. The inspector contacts the person listed on the application.
Renewed or issued license not received Monitor the public record during processing. Notify the Board within 90 days to avoid a possible $25 duplicate fee.
Why timelines differ: some older forms say 7–10 or 10 business days. The current Board webpage asks applicants to allow at least 15 business days before checking submission status.

Ready-to-use contact script

“My legal name is [name]. My license or application number is [number]. The current expiration date is [date]. I submitted [form or transaction] on [date], and my Order ID or confirmation number is [number]. The portal or lookup shows [exact message]. Please confirm the missing requirement and correct next action.”

Verify a Kansas Practitioner or Establishment License

Search the person and business separately. A current individual license does not prove that the work location is licensed, and a current establishment record does not verify every practitioner.

Choose Practitioner or Establishment

Use Practitioner for a person. Use Establishment for a salon, clinic, nail establishment or esthetics location.

Select the correct license type

The search requires a category. Choose cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, electrologist or the matching establishment type.

Start with the license number

The portal accepts partial information. When the number is unavailable, use the legal name with as few filters as possible.

Confirm the full result

Review the name, license type, status, issue date, expiration and physical address.

Open available digital documents

Establishment records may provide inspection-related public documents or additional licensing information.

Save dated proof

Keep a screenshot or printout before hiring, booth rental, establishment purchase, complaint filing or a high-risk service.

Search result What it means Safe next action
Active / Current The credential shows current status on the search date. Confirm the category covers the service and verify the establishment separately.
Near expiration The six-week renewal window may be open. Use the exact expiration date and file no earlier than allowed.
Expired The person or establishment cannot rely on the expired credential. Use the applicable late or reapplication path and follow the work restriction.
No result Wrong category, legal-name mismatch, excessive filters or unissued application. Broaden the search and contact the Board before submitting another payment.

Free lookup versus $20 formal verification

Public lookup

Use the free online search to check current Kansas status for consumers, employers, renters and license holders.

Form 68 verification

Use the $20 cosmetology-profession verification request when another state licensing agency needs official Kansas license, training or examination information sent directly.

Kansas Board Login, Password and Payment Help

The licensing portal, payment portal and PDF forms perform different jobs. Completing only one part can leave the transaction incomplete.

Open Practitioner Account Login

Use the official KBOC portal instead of a general Kansas login or private renewal website.

Use Forgot Password for first-time access

Enter the information requested by the portal rather than creating unrelated duplicate profiles.

Retrieve the verification code

Check the email connected to the Board record, including junk and spam folders.

Confirm the correct credential appears

Compare the license number, type and expiration with public License Verification.

Complete the form and payment

When using a PDF form, enter the emailed payment Order ID on the form and submit the completed signed form.

Save final proof

Print, screenshot or download the confirmation and later verify the updated public record.

Problem Likely reason Fix
Verification email not received Spam filtering or an old email address. Check all folders, then contact the Board instead of requesting repeated codes.
License missing from account Record mismatch or duplicate account. Confirm the public license number and ask the Board to identify the correct account.
Legal name is wrong The Board has not processed the legal-name update. Use the paper process with matching government ID and Social Security card.
Payment completed but no renewal Only the pay portal was completed. Enter the Order ID on the correct application and submit the signed form.
Several accounts were created Account recovery was confused with registration. Stop creating profiles and contact the Board with the license number.
Payment alone is incomplete. A credit-card receipt does not replace the renewal, application, change or verification form associated with the payment.

Renew a Kansas Cosmetology Practitioner License

Cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist and electrologist licenses generally renew every two years. The expiration is individual to the license.

Personal expiration

Last day of the license month

Every two years

Use License Verification to find the exact date. Kansas does not use one statewide practitioner deadline.

Earliest filing date

Do not submit too early

Six weeks before expiration

An earlier renewal is returned and is not retained by the Board.

Submission timing Total fee Work rule
On or before expiration $50 A timely applicant may generally continue working while the renewed license is processed.
After expiration but within six months $75 Do not provide regulated services until the renewed license is received and posted.
More than six months after expiration $125 Do not work until reinstatement is processed and the valid license is received and posted.

Verify the exact expiration

Confirm the license number, type, status and expiration in the official search.

Confirm the six-week window

Do not mail, email or submit the renewal before the filing window opens.

Complete all 20 exam questions

Use current Kansas law and sanitation material and score at least 75%.

Answer the felony question

Provide the case number and Form 55 packet when a first-time report is required.

Sign and pay the correct amount

An unsigned form, failed payment, unanswered disclosure or incomplete examination makes the renewal incomplete.

Save proof and verify the update

Keep the receipt, Order ID and submitted form, then recheck the public license status.

Returned-form risk: when an incomplete application is corrected after expiration, the applicant must include the fee that applies on the corrected submission date.
Routine practitioner CE: the standard Form 2 renewal does not list general continuing-education hours. It requires the Kansas open-book renewal examination. Instructor renewal uses a separate process.

Complete the Kansas 20-Question Renewal Examination

The renewal examination is open book and tests Kansas licensing law, sanitation, infection control, safety and establishment compliance.

Question count

20 questions

Answer every question on the renewal form.

Passing score

75% or better

At least 15 answers must be correct.

Study source

Current Kansas rules

Use statutes, Board regulations and infection-control guidance—not an unofficial answer sheet.

High-value study checklist

Topic Know this Avoid this mistake
Blood exposure Stop the service and follow protective, cleaning, disinfecting and disposal procedures. Continuing the service or using an incomplete blood-exposure kit.
Disinfectants Use qualifying EPA-registered bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal disinfectant or compliant chlorine bleach. Using alcohol, antiseptic or ordinary cleaner as an instrument disinfectant.
Single-use items Discard porous or nondisinfectable supplies immediately after one client. Reusing files, buffers, gloves, wood applicators or porous foot tools.
Hand hygiene Wash with soap and water or use appropriate alcohol-based hand sanitizer before service. Starting the service without hand sanitation.
Pedicure equipment Drain, clean, remove detachable parts, disinfect for the required time, rinse and maintain. Only draining or spraying the basin.
Required displays Post establishment and practitioner licenses, complaint sign, latest inspection report and infection-control regulations. Displaying only a wallet card or photocopy.
Prohibited practices MMA, razor-type callus devices, invasive skin-removal techniques and neck or nail dusters are prohibited. Assuming client consent or private training makes them legal.
Storage Store cleaned and disinfected implements in clean, covered and properly labeled storage. Mixing clean, used and personal items.
Application trap: an unanswered examination, score below 75%, missing signature, unanswered felony question or failed payment causes an incomplete renewal.

Name Change, Address Update and Duplicate-License Help

Situation Correct action What to prepare
Practitioner legal-name change during renewal Use the paper renewal route. Updated government photo ID and Social Security card showing the same legal name.
Practitioner name or address update outside renewal Form 12 Current identification and legal-name evidence when applicable.
Lost practitioner license Form 13 Identity information and current duplicate-license payment.
Add or remove establishment owners Form 30 Owner details, signatures and supporting business documents.
Complete ownership or physical-location change Form 23 New establishment application, $60 fee and compliance inspection.
Mail-delivery responsibility: renewal notices can be missed after a move, but the license holder remains responsible for renewing on time and keeping Board contact details current.

Renew a Kansas Cosmetology Establishment License

Establishment licenses renew every year and have a shorter late period than practitioner licenses.

Expiration rule: an establishment license generally expires on the last day of the month, one year after issuance.
Timing Total payment Operating rule
On or before expiration $50 A timely filer may generally continue operating while renewal is processed.
Within 60 days after expiration $80 total Stop operating until the renewal is processed and the license becomes active.
More than 60 days after expiration New application required Close and complete Form 23 plus another compliance inspection before reopening.
  • Confirm establishment name, license type, owner, address and exact expiration.
  • Do not submit more than six weeks early.
  • Complete the adult-care-home question when applicable.
  • Answer the felony question and attach Form 55 when required.
  • Sign the owner or authorized-representative attestation.
  • Include the correct $50 or $80 payment.
  • Report a missing renewed license within 90 days.
Shared enforcement risk: an expired establishment can expose the owner and practitioners working at that location to enforcement action.

Kansas Training and First-License Requirements

Applicants generally must be at least 17, satisfy the accredited high-school or equivalent requirement, complete approved training and pass the required examinations.

Credential Training requirement Initial exam path
Cosmetologist 1,500 hours Written Theory and Written Practical.
Esthetician 1,000 hours Current Kansas esthetician examinations.
Manicurist 350 hours Current Kansas manicurist examinations.
Electrologist 500 school hours or 1,000 approved apprenticeship hours Current Kansas electrology examinations.
Kansas “apprentice” wording: for cosmetology, esthetics and nail technology, the statute generally describes an apprentice as a student learning in a Board-licensed school. Do not assume an ordinary salon job replaces the required licensed-school hours. Electrology has a separate approved apprenticeship possibility.

Form 1 document checklist

  • Fully completed and typed Practitioner License Application.
  • $60 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Clear copy of the Social Security card.
  • Current U.S. government-issued photo identification.
  • Exact name match across the form, ID and Social Security card.
  • Court or legal documents explaining a different name on education records.
  • School name, location, attendance dates and completed hours.
  • Training hours reported to the examination system by the school.
  • Official accredited high-school transcript, GED verification or equivalent record.
  • Foreign credential evaluation sent directly by an accepted evaluator when applicable.
  • Felony or disciplinary disclosure documents where required.
Identification quality: the practitioner application says faxed identification copies are not accepted because photographs may not reproduce legibly.

Initial-license workflow

Complete approved training

Confirm the school reports the required curriculum hours to the testing website.

Create the testing account

Use the temporary credentials supplied by the school or referring agency.

Pass both required examinations

Each cosmetologist examination requires a score of 75.

Print and submit Form 1

Include the fee, identification, education and disclosure records.

Wait for Board processing

Exam results and a submitted application do not by themselves create an active license.

Verify issuance before working

Confirm active status in the official search unless a valid temporary permit has been issued and posted.

Kansas Cosmetology Exam Handbook and Test-Day Rules

The Board law book and the testing vendor’s Candidate Information Bulletin answer different questions. Exam candidates should use both.

Law and sanitation

Cosmetology Professions Law Book

Use for statutes, Board rules, sanitation standards, license scope and establishment requirements.

Testing procedure

Candidate Information Bulletin

Use for scheduling, fees, identification, arrival, exam content, retakes and testing-center conduct.

Current cosmetologist examination structure

Exam Fee and limit Current content
Written Theory $75 • 2 hours 120 multiple-choice questions: 100 scored and 20 experimental.
Written Practical $75 • 2 hours 125 multiple-choice questions about service procedures, safety and practical decisions.
Retest $75 per failed exam A score below 75 requires retaking the entire failed examination.

When a Kansas student may schedule

  • Written Theory may generally be scheduled after reaching 1,000 program hours.
  • Written Practical may generally be scheduled when the student is within 80 hours of completing the program.
  • The full program must be complete by the date of the first examination.
  • The school or referring program must report all completed curriculum hours by test day.
  • Candidates schedule appointments online; walk-ins are not admitted.

Exam-day checklist

  • Bring two original accepted identification documents.
  • At least one ID must contain a current photograph.
  • Name and date of birth must match the testing account.
  • Bring official legal-name documentation when the IDs do not match.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before the appointment.
  • Entry closes at the scheduled exam time.
  • Examinations are currently offered in English.
  • No phones, watches, bags, notes, study materials, food or beverages are allowed in the examination room.
  • No routine break is scheduled during the examination.

Where the theory score is concentrated

Theory weight

40% safety and sanitation

Infection control, blood exposure, chemicals, waste, disinfection and storage form the largest scored content area.

Theory weight

25% Kansas laws and rules

Study state-specific licensing, sanitation, scope and establishment requirements.

Passing score

75 on each exam

Passing one examination does not excuse a failed attempt on the other.

Results: the current Candidate Information Bulletin says results are normally posted in the online account within five business days. Testing-center staff cannot provide scores.
Late or missed test: a late candidate is not admitted and must schedule and pay again. Schedule changes are not allowed outside the vendor’s seven-day policy.

Work While Waiting: Kansas Temporary Permit Rules

A temporary permit is optional, must be applied for and does not issue until the Board determines the practitioner application is complete.

Permit fee

$15

Pay through the approved payment route and record the Order ID when applicable.

Maximum permits

One per applicant

The permit cannot be extended or replaced with a second temporary permit.

Printed duration

Six weeks after exam

The permit carries an expiration date six weeks after the scheduled examination date.

  • Submit the practitioner-licensure application first.
  • Resolve every deficiency before expecting permit issuance.
  • Wait until the temporary permit is received.
  • Work only in a licensed establishment.
  • Post the permit conspicuously.
  • Stop working immediately after failing any examination.
Immediate invalidation: the temporary permit becomes null and void when an examination is failed, even when a later expiration date is printed on it.
No extension: a missed test, failed test, rescheduled appointment or Board-processing delay does not create a right to another temporary permit.

Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Kansas

Kansas reviews the profession, training hours, current license status, work experience, residency or military route and direct verification before assigning the final requirement.

Cosmetology background Likely Kansas route Important limit
1,500 hours plus active out-of-state license 20-question open-book Kansas law examination. The Board still needs direct license and training verification.
1,500 hours with expired or no license Kansas Board examinations. An old wall license does not establish current standing.
Fewer than 1,500 hours plus active license Kansas Board examinations. The Board determines whether another statutory route affects the result.
Fewer hours plus expired or no license Additional hours plus Kansas Board examinations. Wait for the Board’s written hour calculation before enrolling.
Out-of-state manicurist 350 hours plus Written Theory and Written Practical. The current form does not offer the same law-exam-only route shown for some other categories.

Form 3 document checklist

  • $75 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Current U.S. government-issued photo ID.
  • Legible Social Security card.
  • Legal-name-change documentation where applicable.
  • Complete felony disclosures and case numbers.
  • Form 55 packet when required.
  • Complete professional-discipline disclosure.
  • Form 57 when required.
  • Direct verification from every jurisdiction where licensed.
  • Direct verification of professional training.
  • Employment verification when used for a qualifying route.
  • High-school transcript or equivalent unless a stated exception applies.
  • Foreign credential evaluation when education occurred outside the United States.
Direct verification: a photograph or copy of an out-of-state wall license does not replace certification sent by the issuing licensing agency.
Processing expectation: the out-of-state form says the process normally takes at least three weeks and can take longer while external verifications are outstanding.
Previous Kansas license: do not use the out-of-state form to renew or reinstate a Kansas credential that was issued previously.

Open, Purchase or Relocate a Kansas Establishment

Form 23 is used for a new establishment, complete ownership change or physical-location change. A separate application is required for each separately licensed profession type at the location.

Application fee

$60

The current establishment application fee is nonrefundable.

Planning time

At least three weeks

Submit early enough for processing and the scheduled compliance inspection.

Opening rule

Pass inspection

Except for the narrow signed existing-owner option, the establishment opens after successful compliance inspection.

Choose the correct establishment action

Business change Correct action Why
Brand-new establishment Form 23 A new facility license and compliance inspection are required.
Complete ownership transfer Form 23 An establishment license is tied to the listed owner and location.
Physical-location move Form 23 The old license is valid only for its printed address.
Add or remove some owners Form 30 This is an owner update rather than a complete transfer.
Offer multiple profession categories Separate Form 23 applications Cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and electrology establishments are separately licensed.

When another active establishment license remains at the address

  • The current owner may return the active license to the Board marked closed.
  • The current owner may sign the new application and temporarily authorize operation under the existing license.
  • The building owner or manager may certify that the former license holder vacated and has no right to occupy the premises.
  • The new applicant cannot independently submit another owner’s active license as though it were the applicant’s property.
Existing-owner authorization: the current license owner remains legally and financially responsible for violations while the new applicant operates under that license before the compliance inspection.

Shared-space requirements

  • Use a solid partition when the licensed area shares a room, suite or space with another business or profession.
  • A connecting door is permitted but must remain closed during business hours.
  • The required shampoo bowl or sink must be inside the Board-licensed area.
  • Failure to meet these conditions at inspection causes denial and reapplication.

Home-establishment requirements

  • Provide a separate outside entrance with direct access.
  • Separate the licensed space from living quarters with a solid partition.
  • Keep any connecting door closed during business hours.
  • The restroom may be located within the living quarters.

Compliance-inspection appointment rules

  • The inspector contacts the person designated on the application.
  • The establishment must be completely set up and operationally ready.
  • Missing the appointment or cancelling with less than 24 hours’ notice causes denial and reapplication.
  • Failing the compliance inspection also requires a new application and fee.
  • After passing, the establishment may generally open immediately.
  • The physical license should arrive within approximately two weeks after the successful inspection.

Prepare for a Kansas Establishment Inspection

New-establishment compliance inspections are scheduled. Routine annual and complaint-related inspections are generally unannounced.

Inspection timing

  • Routine inspections may occur from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • They may occur on any day of the week.
  • They may also occur whenever regulated services are being provided.
  • Services do not automatically have to stop during the inspection.

Inspector access

  • All rooms must be accessible.
  • Cabinets and roll-about trolleys must be unlockable.
  • Drawers marked personal remain subject to inspection.
  • Do not hide or move an item while it is being documented.
Interference: refusing an inspection, impeding the inspector or correcting violations during the inspection can create additional disciplinary exposure.

Required public displays

  • Active establishment license near the entrance.
  • Active full-size practitioner license for every working licensee.
  • Most recent inspection report.
  • Consumer complaint sign.
  • Current health and sanitation regulations.
  • Wallet cards and ordinary photocopies do not replace the required practitioner license display.

Compliance-inspection supply checklist

Area Have this ready Common failure
Disinfectant Qualifying EPA-registered disinfectant or compliant chlorine bleach, original container and SDS. Using cleaner, alcohol or antiseptic instead.
Immersion container Covered container large enough for full instrument immersion. Container is too small or no solution is prepared.
Blood-exposure kit Gloves, antiseptic, sterile bandages, disinfectant and disposable bags. Missing or expired supplies.
Clean implements Labeled, clean and covered cabinet, drawer or container. Mixed with used, dirty or personal items.
Used implements Separate labeled and covered used-tool container. Used tools left on the workstation.
Single-use items Covered labeled storage or original packaging. Porous supplies reused between clients.
Linens and capes Separate closed and labeled storage for clean and dirty items. Open baskets or mixed storage.
Service sink Hot and cold water inside the licensed area. Restroom sink used for services or instrument cleaning.
Restroom Working sink and toilet, liquid soap and disposable towels or air dryer. Missing supplies or unsanitary conditions.
No-charge education: Board inspectors offer infection-control seminars at establishments. Use the current request process or contact the Board to schedule one.

Kansas Sanitation and Infection-Control Micro-Rules

Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing are different. Reusable implements must generally be cleaned first and then disinfected.

First step

Clean

Remove visible debris using soap and water or detergent and water.

Second step

Disinfect

Apply qualifying chemical disinfection to the cleaned nonporous tool or surface.

Electrology

Sterilize

Reusable electrology instruments require compliant heat sterilization; needles are single use.

Disinfectant preparation

  • Have disinfectant or bleach solution prepared whenever the establishment is open.
  • Prepare fresh solution daily.
  • Replace it sooner when visibly cloudy or dirty.
  • Measure and use the product according to its label.
  • Keep immersion containers covered.
  • Use containers large enough for full immersion.
  • Retain the original product container and Safety Data Sheet.
  • Wear gloves or use tongs when handling immersed tools.
  • Rinse and dry implements after the required contact time.
Bleach: use chlorine bleach with a disinfection method on its label. Splashless, low-splash and scented-additive products may not meet the Board guidance described in the compliance material.

Single-use items

Examples include porous files and buffers, sanding bands, wood applicators, cotton, sponges, disposable razors, gloves, thread, foam toe separators, pumice stones, wax sticks and similar items that cannot withstand proper disinfection.

Manufacturer marketing does not control: a porous item labeled “reusable,” “sanitizable” or “disinfectable” remains single use when it cannot be properly disinfected under Kansas requirements.

Prohibited items and practices

  • Methyl methacrylate monomer possession or use.
  • Razor-type devices used to remove calluses or skim skin blemishes.
  • Neck dusters and nail dusters.
  • Invasive skin-removal techniques outside licensed scope.
  • Instrument belts or organizers that prevent compliant covered storage.
  • Food preparation in the service area.
  • Smoking in the licensed establishment.
  • Animals other than qualifying assistance animals.
  • Double-dipping products used on clients.

Pedicure equipment after every client

  1. Drain all water.
  2. Remove visible debris using soap or detergent and water.
  3. Remove and clean detachable parts.
  4. Circulate qualifying disinfectant or bleach solution for the required contact time.
  5. Drain and rinse with potable water.
  6. Complete applicable end-of-day and periodic maintenance.

Final Kansas License Checklist

  • Verify the practitioner and establishment separately before relying on license status.
  • Use the current NW Button Road address instead of an old SW Jackson Street reference.
  • Begin portal access with Forgot Password when using the account for the first time.
