Kansas Temporary Cosmetology Permit While Waiting for Exams
Kansas offers an optional temporary permit for qualifying applicants who have completed training and are progressing through the licensing examination process. It is not automatically issued after school graduation.
Before a Permit Can Be Issued
- Complete the required training.
- Submit the practitioner licensure application first.
- The Board must determine the licensure application is complete.
- Submit the temporary-permit application and current $15 fee.
- Wait until the permit is actually issued before providing consumer services.
Permit Limits
- Only one temporary permit may be issued per applicant.
- The permit cannot be extended.
- Its expiration is tied to the examination schedule.
- It becomes void immediately if the applicant fails a required examination.
- Services may be provided only as allowed under the permit and Kansas law.
A future expiration date printed on the temporary permit does not keep it valid after an examination failure. The current Board form says a failed required exam makes the permit null and void.
How to Verify a Kansas Cosmetology License
Use the Kansas Board’s official License Verification service to check the current public record. The Board separates practitioner records from establishment records, so make sure you are searching the correct tab.
Practitioner License
Use the practitioner search when checking a cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, electrologist or another individual credential regulated by the Board.
Establishment License
Use the establishment tab when checking a salon, clinic or other regulated facility. A practitioner’s license and a salon license are separate credentials.
The verification page notes that the reCAPTCHA can time out after inactivity. If a search stops working, refresh the page and start again rather than assuming the license record is missing.
Kansas Cosmetology License Renewal
Kansas practitioner licenses generally use a two-year renewal cycle. Do not assume every cosmetologist has the same statewide expiration date. Use the date on your license or the official verification record.
The current practitioner renewal form includes a 20-question open-book renewal examination based on Kansas law and regulation. A practitioner must score at least 75 percent.
Six-week rule: the current renewal form says renewals submitted more than six weeks before the expiration date are returned and are not retained by the Board.

Moving an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Kansas

Transferring School Hours Is Not the Same as License Reciprocity
