Choose the Correct Illinois Renewal Track
Individual cosmetologists normally renew in odd-numbered years, making September 30, 2027 the next regular deadline. Cosmetology teachers, clinic teachers and schools follow an even-year calendar and currently have 2026 renewal activity.
This guide separates those categories and explains fees, continuing education, the new skin-growth course, online renewal, account problems, license lookup and restoration. It is an independent guide and is not affiliated with IDFPR.
Current Renewal Status in 2026
Prepare for September 30, 2027
The regular individual license expires on September 30 of odd-numbered years. It is normal for this renewal option to be unavailable during 2026.
2026 renewal category
Teacher and clinic-teacher licenses expire September 30 of even-numbered years. IDFPR currently lists these categories as renewal available.
Separate 2026 renewal
School licenses also use the September 30 even-year cycle and have a separate fee and online transaction.

Illinois Renewal Dates by License Type
Similar-looking Illinois cosmetology records follow different expiration calendars. Verify the exact license type before buying classes, paying a fee or concluding that a renewal is late.
| Credential | Regular expiration schedule | Current action date | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetologist | September 30 of odd-numbered years | September 30, 2027 | $50 renewal and 14 CE hours unless an exemption applies |
| Cosmetology Teacher | September 30 of even-numbered years | September 30, 2026 | $50 renewal and 24 CE hours |
| Cosmetology Clinic Teacher | September 30 of even-numbered years | September 30, 2026 | $50 renewal and 24 CE hours |
| Cosmetology School | September 30 of even-numbered years | September 30, 2026 | Separate school renewal and $200 regular fee |
| Salon or Shop Registration | November 30 of even-numbered years | November 30, 2026 | Separate business registration and $40 regular fee |
How to Renew an Illinois Cosmetology License Online
Use this sequence only when the correct license category is in an open renewal period. It prevents duplicate accounts, wrong-license payments and false CE attestations.
Look up the license first
Confirm the license number, legal name, credential type, expiration date and current status in IDFPR’s public lookup.
Confirm that renewal is open
Check the IDFPR cosmetology page. In 2026, teacher, clinic-teacher and school renewals are listed as available; the ordinary cosmetologist category is not.
Complete every applicable course
Finish profession-specific CE, sexual-harassment training, domestic-violence awareness when applicable, and the one-time abnormal-skin-growth course when required.
Use the account connected to the record
Recover the existing user ID or password before creating another account. Follow the renewal link displayed on the IDFPR profession page.
Review personal information
Verify the legal name, street mailing address, email, phone, license number and credential category before continuing.
Answer the CE questions accurately
IDFPR normally requires the applicant to certify compliance. Keep certificates available because the Department may request proof through an audit.
Check the transaction and pay
An individual cosmetologist or teacher normally pays $50. Confirm that the cart does not show a school, salon, restoration or unrelated application.
Save proof and verify the public result
Save the receipt and confirmation. IDFPR advises allowing two to four business days for the license status to update.
Should You Use CORE or the Legacy IDFPR Renewal Portal?
IDFPR is moving professions and transactions into CORE in stages. Cosmetology records may not all use the same account route during the transition.
| Situation | Best starting point | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Existing individual cosmetologist license | Open the IDFPR cosmetology page and use the renewal link shown for the current cycle. | Do not assume every older individual license has already moved into CORE. |
| New application created in CORE | Use the CORE account associated with that application. | Do not create a separate legacy account for the same transaction. |
| School or CE-sponsor application | Follow the CORE link provided on the cosmetology profession page. | Do not apply through an old bookmarked form without checking the current page. |
| Email and portal link disagree | Open IDFPR independently and confirm the live profession page. | Do not enter credentials through an unverified email link. |
Illinois Cosmetology Renewal Fees
Illinois rules calculate several standard fees per year. Expired, inactive or disciplined records may require a different total.
| Credential or service | Rule calculation | Normal amount | Before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetologist | $25 per year | $50 | Confirm this is an ordinary two-year renewal. |
| Cosmetology Teacher or Clinic Teacher | $25 per year | $50 | Confirm the 24-hour teacher CE requirement is complete. |
| Cosmetology School | $100 per year | $200 | Use the school record, not a teacher’s personal record. |
| Salon or Shop Registration | $20 per year | $40 | Business registration is separate from every worker’s license. |
| Certified License Record | Per request | $20 | Use free public lookup when certification is not required. |
| Restoration of an expired license | $50 restoration charge plus applicable lapsed renewal fees | Varies; statutory cap may apply | Use IDFPR’s reactivation instructions for the exact record. |
- Verify the license number and credential type.
- Confirm whether the action is renewal, restoration or reactivation.
- Check for an outstanding disciplinary or account requirement.
- Save the official receipt and payment reference.
- Do not pay a private site that promises guaranteed activation.
Illinois Cosmetology Renewal Hours and Required Topics
IDFPR’s June 2026 fact sheet divides cosmetology CE into the mandated sexual-harassment hour and approved profession-related subjects.
Fourteen total hours
Complete one hour of sexual-harassment-prevention training and thirteen hours in approved cosmetology subject areas during the two years before expiration.
Twenty-four total hours
Complete the cosmetologist’s fourteen-hour requirement plus ten additional hours in teaching methodology, educational psychology, classroom management or other teaching-related subjects.
Approved cosmetology subject areas
| Subject area | Examples of useful course content |
|---|---|
| Product chemistry | Advanced product chemistry and chemical interaction. |
| Machines and implements | Safe, updated use of tools and equipment within cosmetology scope. |
| Sanitary procedures | Infection control, disinfection and exposure minimization. |
| Hazardous chemicals | Safe handling, storage and exposure reduction. |
| Anatomy | Advanced knowledge of the skin, scalp, hair and nails. |
| Communication | Human relations, consultations and professional communication. |
| Business | Management and marketing related to licensed practice. |
Other ways credit may be calculated
- One semester hour from a college or university may equal 15 CE hours.
- One quarter hour may equal 10 CE hours.
- Qualifying out-of-state CE may receive Illinois credit.
- An approved instructor or speaker may receive presentation and limited preparation credit.
- The same qualifying course may satisfy more than one license when the content is appropriate to each profession.
First Illinois Cosmetology Renewal: What Is Exempt and What Is Not?
The first-renewal exemption applies to the ordinary profession-specific CE requirement. It does not automatically remove every separate statutory training requirement.
| Requirement | First-renewal treatment | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary fourteen-hour profession CE | Generally exempt at the first renewal after original issuance | Confirm that this is truly the first renewal after original licensure—not restoration or another status change. |
| Sexual-harassment-prevention training | Required beginning with the first renewal | Complete the qualifying one-hour training and retain proof. |
| Domestic violence and sexual assault awareness | IDFPR describes this as an initial-renewal CE component, while the first renewal also has a general profession-CE exemption | Follow the questions shown in the live renewal and confirm with IDFPR when your issue date makes the timing unclear. |
| Abnormal skin growth and melanoma education | Required at the first renewal submitted on or after January 1, 2026 for a person licensed before that date | Complete the approved one-hour course and keep the certificate. |
| Renewal application and fee | Still required | Submit the renewal and pay even when ordinary CE is exempt. |
New 2026 Abnormal Skin Growth and Melanoma Course
Illinois’ Melanoma Education Law created a one-time, one-hour training requirement covering abnormal skin growth and identification of melanoma warning signs.
Who must complete it?
- An original-license applicant who applies on or after January 1, 2026.
- A person licensed before January 1, 2026 at the first renewal submitted on or after that date.
- A person licensed before January 1, 2026 at the first restoration submitted on or after that date.
What proof is needed?
- Complete an IDFPR-approved program.
- Download the completion certificate.
- Keep the original digital file.
- Provide the certificate with the application when IDFPR instructions require it.
How to Choose Illinois Cosmetology Renewal Classes
A page saying “Illinois approved” is not enough. Confirm the sponsor, course category, mandatory topics and certificate format before paying.
Before buying
- Search the sponsor in IDFPR’s approved BCENT sponsor list.
- Confirm that the sponsor registration is current.
- Check that the course applies to cosmetologists.
- Confirm whether sexual-harassment or domestic-violence training is included.
- Check whether the skin-growth course is separate.
- Verify the number of hours and completion date.
- Read certificate, refund and retake rules.
Warning signs
- No verifiable Illinois sponsor record.
- A claim that the course provider renews the license for you.
- No examination or completion check for an online course.
- A certificate without your license number or awarded hours.
- An old “2025 renewal” page with no 2027-cycle explanation.
- A promise that one generic package automatically satisfies every new Illinois mandate.
Can all fourteen hours be completed online?
CE Certificate and Audit-Proof Checklist
Renewal normally uses an applicant certification rather than an automatic upload of every class. IDFPR can later request evidence through a random audit.
Your completion record should clearly show
- Your legal name.
- Your Illinois license number.
- The CE profession or category.
- The course title.
- The number of credit hours.
- The date of completion.
- The sponsor or approved provider.
- Successful completion or examination result when applicable.

Update Your Name, Address, Email or Phone Before Renewal
Illinois licensees must keep their contact information current. Current law requires address and email changes to be reported within 14 days.
| Change | Information or proof | Important rule |
|---|---|---|
| Mailing address | Current license details and new street address | The online change form says a P.O. box is not acceptable as the new mailing address. |
| Existing account information and new email | Update promptly so renewal, audit and deficiency messages reach you. | |
| Telephone | Existing license information and new number | Keep a screenshot or confirmation of the submitted change. |
| Legal name | Marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, naturalization document or driver’s license as applicable | Update the license record before expecting course certificates or account identity checks to match. |
Free License Lookup or $20 Certified License Record?
These services solve different problems. Do not pay for certification when an employer or client only needs to see the current public status.
| Service | Use it when | What it provides | Cost or timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public License Lookup | Checking current status, expiration or license type | Public primary-source license information | Free |
| Online Certification of Licensure | Another board, employer or organization requests a certified state record | Name, number, status, issue date, expiration, licensure method, discipline where applicable, seal and official signature | Normally $20; available online certifications are emailed within about 72 hours |
| FOIA disciplinary documents | Complete disciplinary documents—not only the certification summary—are required | Records handled through IDFPR’s FOIA process | Depends on the request |
Expired or Inactive Illinois Cosmetology License
When ordinary renewal is no longer offered, use the restoration or reinstatement route. Requirements become more extensive after five years.
| Record situation | Main requirements | Alternative or special route |
|---|---|---|
| Expired or inactive less than five years | Application, calculated fee and 14 CE hours completed during the two years immediately before restoration | Military restoration has separate documentation provisions. |
| Expired or inactive five years or more | Application, questionnaire, fee, 14 CE hours and evidence of qualifying recent licensed practice | A 250-hour refresher course or examination route may be used when recent practice cannot be proved. |
| Unable to prove recent practice | Complete the approved refresher or pass the applicable examination | When using the refresher/exam route, the ordinary 14-hour restoration CE may not be required, but other requirements still apply. |
| Returning from active military service | Provide qualifying discharge documentation such as DD-214 | Current renewal fee provisions may apply instead of the ordinary restoration calculation. |
| Suspended or disciplined | Follow the Department order or petition process | Ordinary renewal payment does not remove discipline. |

Illinois Renewal Mistakes That Cause Delays
Renewing in the wrong year
Individual cosmetologists renew in odd years; teachers and schools renew in even years.
Ignoring the 2026 skin course
Eligible renewal and restoration applicants need the one-time abnormal-skin-growth certificate.
Using an unverified CE provider
Confirm the sponsor before buying a fourteen-hour package.
Misreading first-renewal exemption
The profession-specific CE exemption does not remove every statutory course.
Creating duplicate accounts
Recover the existing portal account or call support before registering again.
Using the wrong portal bookmark
Start from IDFPR’s current cosmetology page during the CORE transition.
Failing to update contact details
Illinois requires prompt updates, and missed email can mean missed audit or renewal instructions.
Discarding certificates
Renewal certification can be audited after the transaction.
Working from a receipt
Allow processing time and verify the official public status.
Using free lookup as certification
Another licensing board may require the $20 certified record.
Requesting a waiver without evidence
A waiver requires facts, documentation and Department review.
Renewing an expired record normally
Use restoration or reactivation when the ordinary renewal window has closed.

Illinois Cosmetology Renewal FAQs
Is an individual Illinois cosmetology license due in 2026?
No. An ordinary cosmetologist license expires September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next regular individual deadline is September 30, 2027. Teachers, clinic teachers and schools follow an even-year calendar and do have 2026 renewal activity.
How much is Illinois cosmetology license renewal?
The regular individual cosmetologist fee is $50 for the two-year cycle. Teacher and clinic-teacher renewal is also normally $50. Restoration, school and salon transactions use different amounts.
How many CE hours does an Illinois cosmetologist need?
A regular renewal requires fourteen hours: one hour of sexual-harassment-prevention training and thirteen hours in approved cosmetology subjects. A teacher needs ten additional teaching-related hours, making twenty-four total.
Can all Illinois cosmetology CE hours be completed online?
Yes. IDFPR allows the full total through approved online individual-study courses. The online course must include an examination and a method of verifying successful completion.
Does a first renewal require fourteen CE hours?
The ordinary profession-specific fourteen-hour requirement is generally exempt at the first renewal after original licensure. Sexual-harassment training begins with the first renewal, and separate statutory training such as the 2026 skin-growth course may still apply.
What is the new Illinois skin-growth course?
It is a one-time, one-hour course on abnormal skin growth and melanoma identification. A person licensed before January 1, 2026 must provide proof with the first renewal or restoration submitted on or after that date.
How do I renew an Illinois cosmetology license online?
Confirm that the credential is in an open renewal period, complete every required course, start from the current IDFPR cosmetology page, use the account connected to the license, submit the renewal, pay the displayed fee and verify the public status after two to four business days.
What happens if my Illinois cosmetology license expired?
When ordinary renewal is unavailable, use IDFPR’s restoration or reactivation process. A license expired or inactive for less than five years generally requires an application, calculated fee and fourteen recent CE hours. Additional proof or a refresher/exam route may apply after five years.
What is the Illinois cosmetology renewal phone number?
Call IDFPR at 888-473-4858 for general licensing help. For published online-account assistance, call 800-560-6420. IDFPR’s TTY/TDD line is 866-325-4949.
Is free license lookup the same as official certification?
No. Public lookup is a free primary-source status check. A certified record normally costs $20 and includes the Department seal, signature, issue and expiration dates, method of licensure and disciplinary information when applicable.
