Illinois Cosmetology Renewal: What Matters in 2026
The exact credential controls the renewal date. Ordinary cosmetologists and cosmetology teachers do not share the same expiration year.

IDFPR’s online-renewal page says a profession generally becomes available for renewal approximately two to three months before the expiration shown on the license. The cosmetology rule also states that a cosmetologist may renew during the month preceding expiration. Because live portal availability controls the actual transaction, check IDFPR’s current renewal list rather than guessing the opening date.
Illinois Cosmetology Continuing Education: 14 Hours and Current Rules
An ordinary cosmetologist renewing after the first renewal generally certifies completion of at least 14 hours of continuing education from an approved cosmetology sponsor during the two-year prerenewal period.

Section 1175.425 requires 14 CE hours for cosmetologist renewal unless an applicable first-renewal exception or approved waiver applies.
CE exception
The current administrative rule states that a renewal applicant is not required to comply with the profession’s CE requirement for the first renewal after original licensure.

The current Section 1175.1210, amended effective October 6, 2025, states that a licensee may earn the total hours required for renewal or restoration through in-person courses and online individual-study courses. Some older IDFPR profession-page text still states that only half of cosmetology CE may be online. For the 2027 cosmetologist cycle, review the current administrative rule and live IDFPR renewal instructions before purchasing courses.
Required training that deserves separate attention
- Illinois requires sexual-harassment-prevention training for individual professional license holders during applicable renewal cycles.
- The cosmetology Act includes domestic-violence and sexual-assault-awareness education requirements.
- The current rules include a one-hour abnormal skin growth education requirement for new applicants and renewal/restoration applicants under the applicable Act provision.

October 2026 Illinois Cosmetology Examination Language Update
IDFPR has announced that beginning October 1, 2026, barber, cosmetology, esthetician and nail technician examinations will be available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese.
The current IDFPR notice lists a $200 cosmetology examination fee and a $112 cosmetology instructor examination fee for those language versions.
