Texas Cosmetology License Renewal: Fees, CE, Late Renewal & 2026 Requirements
A Texas Cosmetology Operator license is generally valid for two years. For an on-time practitioner renewal, the current Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation fee is $50. Most licensees also need approved continuing education before renewal.
The correct route changes if your license is already expired, your CE has not posted, your legal name changed, or TDLR asks for lawful-presence documentation.
Texas Cosmetology Renewal Quick Answer
For a current Cosmetology Operator or covered specialty practitioner license, complete the applicable TDLR-approved continuing education, confirm your license information, and renew through Texas Online Licensing Services before the expiration date. The normal practitioner renewal fee is $50.
Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent information website. It is not TDLR or Texas.gov. TDLR records, laws, rules and written agency instructions control the actual renewal.
Which Texas Cosmetology Licenses Use the Practitioner Renewal Process?
TDLR’s practitioner renewal system covers several barbering and cosmetology credentials. Select the exact license type in the official renewal guide because the system may ask different follow-up questions based on the credential and current status.
Cosmetology Operator
The general Texas cosmetology practitioner license. The current on-time renewal fee is $50.
Specialty practitioners
TDLR also renews Esthetician, Manicurist, Esthetician/Manicurist, Hair Weaving and Eyelash Extension specialty credentials through the practitioner process.
Class A Barber
Class A Barber licenses use the same TDLR barbering and cosmetology renewal framework but remain a separate credential.
How to Renew a Texas Cosmetology License
Check your current TDLR record
Confirm the exact license type, current license number and expiration date. Do not depend only on a courtesy reminder or an old paper credential.
Complete the required continuing education
Use a TDLR-approved provider. Most licensees need four hours every two years; the reduced two-hour requirement applies when the qualifying Texas license has been held for at least 15 years.
Confirm your CE was reported
The provider reports completed CE electronically. Use the TDLR Continuing Education Courses Lookup if you need to confirm that the record has posted.
Resolve a legal-name issue before renewing
If your legal name changed, TDLR recommends completing the name-change process before renewal so the renewed license reflects the correct name.
Use the official online renewal system
Follow the TDLR practitioner-renewal selector or go to Online Licensing Services and complete the transaction for your credential.
Pay the correct fee
A current practitioner license has a $50 on-time renewal fee. If the license has already expired, use the late-renewal band that matches the actual expiration date.
Respond to any TDLR request
If TDLR asks for lawful-presence documents or other information, the renewal may remain pending until the requested information is reviewed.
Verify the renewed public record
Keep your transaction receipt, then check the official license record after processing to confirm the new expiration and active status.
Texas Cosmetology Renewal Fees in 2026
For practitioner licenses with the current $50 standard renewal fee, late-renewal amounts depend on how long the license has been expired.
| License status | Current practitioner fee / route | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Current and renewed on time | $50 | Complete applicable CE and submit the renewal before expiration. |
| Expired 90 days or less | $75 | This is 1.5 times the ordinary $50 renewal fee. |
| Expired more than 90 days but less than 18 months | $100 | This is twice the ordinary renewal fee. |
| Expired at least 18 months but less than 3 years | $100 + Executive Director approval | Use the Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal route and satisfy renewal requirements. |
| Expired 3 years or more | Not eligible for ordinary renewal | Use the expired-license reapplication process and meet the current requirements for a new license. |
Texas Cosmetology Continuing Education Requirements
Texas changed the barbering and cosmetology CE structure beginning September 1, 2025. For renewals in 2026, the current rules divide licensees according to how long the qualifying Texas license has been held.
| License history | Required CE | Required subjects |
|---|---|---|
| Texas license held for fewer than 15 years | 4 hours every 2 years | 1 hour sanitation + 1 hour human trafficking awareness + 2 approved elective hours. |
| Qualifying Texas license held for at least 15 years | 2 hours every 2 years | 1 hour sanitation + 1 hour human trafficking awareness. |
The two elective hours in the standard four-hour requirement may cover approved barbering or cosmetology topics, sanitation, Texas barbering and cosmetology laws and rules, or mental-health awareness.
One CE hour
TDLR defines one hour of continuing education as 50 minutes of actual instruction time.
Repeat courses
You cannot receive CE credit for taking the same course more than once during the applicable period.
Dual license holders
TDLR states that CE taken for one barbering or cosmetology license may satisfy CE for another covered license, subject to the applicable 15-year rule.
What If Your Texas Cosmetology CE Is Missing?
TDLR places the electronic reporting responsibility on the approved CE provider, not on the individual licensee. The provider must report completion to TDLR within seven days.
Allow the reporting window
If fewer than seven days have passed since completion, allow the provider’s reporting period before assuming the record is missing.
Check the TDLR CE lookup
Use the official continuing-education lookup with the correct license information.
Contact the course provider first
If the course still is not posted after seven days, ask the provider to verify the license number and electronic completion report.
Keep your certificate
The provider should issue a completion certificate within 15 days. Retain it for two years after completion.
Contact TDLR if the provider cannot resolve it
Use TDLR Education and Examination contact options after first giving the provider an opportunity to correct the record.
Expired Texas Cosmetology License: Which Route Applies?
Complete the applicable renewal requirements and use the late-renewal route. You cannot practice regulated cosmetology during the expired period.
Complete the applicable CE and renewal requirements and pay twice the ordinary practitioner renewal fee.
Submit the current Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal and satisfy the renewal requirements. Approval is required.
The license cannot be renewed through the normal late-renewal process. Use TDLR’s expired-license application and meet the current licensing requirements.
2026 TDLR Lawful-Presence Verification During Renewal
TDLR implemented a lawful-presence documentation process in 2026. The related rule took effect May 1, 2026. This process applies to license applications and renewals, but not every renewal applicant is asked to submit additional documents.
If TDLR does not request documents
Do not send documents merely because you are renewing. TDLR specifically tells licensees to wait until it is time to renew and they receive a request or instructions that require documentation.
If TDLR requests documents
Follow the official instructions and submit only clear copies or electronic copies from the accepted-document list. Do not send original documents to TDLR.
If requested lawful-presence documents are not received, the renewal can remain pending and the existing license may expire on its normal expiration date. Once expired, the applicable late-renewal process applies.
TDLR also states that U.S. citizenship itself is not required for a Texas occupational license; the process determines eligibility under the applicable lawful-presence requirements.
Change Your Name or Contact Information Before Renewal
A mismatched legal name can complicate renewal and the final license record. TDLR recommends completing a name change before renewing when both transactions are needed.
Legal name change
TDLR requires proof of the legal change, such as qualifying government-issued identification, a marriage document, court record or naturalization document depending on the change.
If the name change is handled as part of renewal, TDLR does not charge a separate name-change fee.
Mailing address, phone or email
Keep contact information current so TDLR can deliver renewal notices and requests for additional information. Contact information can also be updated through the available online service.
Verify Your Texas License After Renewal
A payment receipt confirms a transaction, not necessarily the final active status of the credential. After TDLR processes the renewal, check the official license record and confirm the new expiration date.

Practitioner Renewal Is Not the Same as Salon Renewal
A Texas cosmetologist’s personal license and the establishment license for a salon, suite or shop are separate credentials. Do not use the practitioner $50 renewal fee for an establishment.
| Establishment type | Current on-time renewal fee | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Full-Service Establishment | $78 | Separate business-location credential. |
| Specialty Establishment | $78 | Separate from the professional’s personal license. |
| Mini-Establishment | $70 | Individual suite or mini-establishment licensing route. |
TDLR says establishments must renew before expiration, and an establishment with an expired license may not continue offering services to clients.
Texas Cosmetology Renewal Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CE is not showing | Provider has not reported it, the seven-day reporting period has not passed, or the wrong license data was submitted. | Check the CE lookup, then contact the provider first. |
| Renewal option is unavailable | Wrong license record, expired-license route, incomplete CE or another account issue. | Use the TDLR renewal selector and verify the license number and status. |
| Name does not match | Legal-name change has not been processed. | Complete the TDLR name-change process before renewal when possible. |
| TDLR asks for extra documents | Your renewal may have been selected for lawful-presence verification or another review. | Follow the exact TDLR request and submit only the requested copies. |
| Payment went through but license still looks old | Renewal may still be processing or another requirement remains unresolved. | Keep the receipt, check the public record again and contact TDLR if it does not update. |
| License expired more than three years | Ordinary renewal eligibility has ended. | Use the expired-license reapplication route rather than paying a normal renewal fee. |
| You never received a reminder | Address/email may be outdated or the notice did not arrive. | Renewal responsibility remains with the license holder; check the expiration directly in the TDLR record. |

Texas Cosmetology License Renewal FAQs
How much is a Texas cosmetology license renewal in 2026?
The current on-time practitioner renewal fee for a Cosmetology Operator and covered specialty practitioner licenses is $50.
How often do I renew a Texas Cosmetology Operator license?
A Texas Cosmetology Operator license is valid for two years from the date of issue, so the ordinary renewal cycle is every two years.
How many CE hours do I need for Texas cosmetology renewal?
Most covered licensees need four TDLR-approved hours every two years: one hour of sanitation, one hour of human-trafficking awareness and two approved elective hours. A licensee who has held the qualifying Texas license for at least 15 years generally needs two hours: one sanitation hour and one human-trafficking-awareness hour.
What is the Texas cosmetology late-renewal fee?
For a practitioner license with a normal $50 renewal fee, the current late-renewal amount is $75 when expired 90 days or less and $100 when expired more than 90 days but less than 18 months. A license expired at least 18 months but less than three years requires Executive Director approval and the applicable $100 fee.
Can I work while my Texas cosmetology license is expired?
No. Texas rules state that a late renewal creates an unlicensed period from the expiration date until the renewed license is issued. Regulated barbering or cosmetology work may not be performed during that period.
What happens if my Texas cosmetology license has been expired for more than three years?
It cannot be renewed through the ordinary late-renewal process. Use TDLR’s expired-license reapplication procedure and meet the current licensing requirements.
Do I need to send lawful-presence documents with every 2026 renewal?
No. TDLR says not everyone will be asked for additional documentation. Do not send documents unless your renewal instructions or a TDLR request requires them.
How long does my CE provider have to report my course?
The approved provider must electronically report course completion to TDLR within seven days. The provider should issue your completion certificate within 15 days, and you should keep that certificate for two years.
Should I change my legal name before renewing?
TDLR recommends completing the name-change process before renewal when both are needed so the renewed license reflects the correct legal name.
Is a Texas salon renewal also $50?
No. Establishment licenses are separate. Current on-time renewal is $78 for Full-Service and Specialty Establishments and $70 for Mini-Establishments.
How do I know my Texas cosmetology renewal is complete?
Keep the renewal receipt and then verify the license in the official TDLR record. Confirm that the credential is active and shows the expected updated expiration date.
