If more than five years have passed without renewal, New York law and the current cosmetology application instructions require the former licensee to use the previous New York State licensure route. Do New York Cosmetologists Need Continuing Education to Renew?
The current ordinary cosmetology renewal instructions do not list a recurring continuing-education-hour requirement for routine operator renewal. Do not confuse renewal requirements with education rules for first-time applicants.
New York does require a one-hour Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness course for certain operator applicants qualifying through New York State education, effective for the initial licensing route from June 17, 2020.
