Ohio uses different renewal calendars for barber credentials and Chapter 4713 cosmetology-side credentials. As of September 29, 2026, the regular 2026 barber renewal date has passed, while the current cosmetology-side cycle runs into January 2027.

What does the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board handle?
The Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board is the state regulator for cosmetology, branches of cosmetology, barbering and related licensed facilities. eLicense Ohio is the online system used for public verification and many licensing transactions.
Professional licenses
Cosmetologist, esthetician, hair designer, manicurist, natural hair stylist, barber, advanced licenses, instructor routes and related credentials.
Salons, barber shops and schools
The Board licenses and regulates covered facilities, including salons, barber shops, schools and certain related business credentials.

How to verify an Ohio cosmetology or barber license
Use the public eLicense Ohio search for a professional or facility record. Search the individual and the salon or barber shop separately when both credentials matter.

Start with less information
For an individual, eLicense recommends using the last name and first initial plus the correct Board. Too many fields can prevent an otherwise valid match.
Use the full license number when available
Enter the complete license number, including its prefix, suffix or punctuation, without extra spaces.
Open the detailed record
Check the credential type, status, effective and expiration dates, city and any public Board-action indicator shown in the record.
Print dated proof when needed
eLicense support instructs users to open the license number, choose “View More Info,” then “Printer Friendly Version” and print the result.

Technical account problems and licensing decisions are different issues. The eLicense help desk can assist with registration, password and portal navigation, but licensing questions belong with the Board.
Existing or previous Ohio licensee
If you hold or previously held a participating Ohio credential, or previously submitted an application, use the existing-licensee route instead of creating a completely unrelated new applicant identity.
True first-time applicant
Use the new-applicant path only if you have never held a covered Ohio license and have never submitted an application through the participating licensing system.

Ohio cosmetology and barber renewal dates
Ohio’s barber renewal cycle and cosmetology-side renewal cycle do not end at the same time. Check the exact credential in eLicense before relying on a general deadline.
Barber / barber instructor
CE deadline: August 15, 2026
License expiration: August 31, 2026
Those regular dates have passed. If the license was not renewed and no waiver or extension applies, Ohio law treats it as expired. Restoration requires the applicable restoration fee and completion of the CE requirement.
Cosmetology and covered branches
CE deadline: January 15, 2027
License expiration: January 31, 2027
Complete required CE early enough to resolve reporting problems before the end of the licensing period.

Ohio continuing education: current 4-hour structure
The ordinary requirement for an applicable active cosmetology, branch, advanced, instructor, boutique-services or barber credential is four hours per biennial licensing period.
1 hour: Ohio laws or rules
One hour must cover updates to Ohio laws or rules regulating the applicable branch of cosmetology and/or barbering.
3 hours: safety and infection control
Three hours must cover safety and infection-control education from a Board-approved continuing-education provider.
The same qualifying hours may be used for other licenses held by the same individual when the rule allows; they do not have to be repeated separately for each license.
Important CE exemptions
Current rules exempt a licensee from ordinary CE, other than required human-trafficking training, until the renewal period that begins after initial licensure. They also exempt a person who was age 65 or older before the start of the renewal period, or who had held a Board license for 30 or more years before the period began.
Ohio cosmetology, esthetics, nail and barber training hours
Current Ohio law and curriculum rules use these initial-training benchmarks. Special routes can differ, including reduced barber training for an individual who already holds an Ohio cosmetology or hair designer license.

School graduation does not itself create an active license. Confirm the school, exact program, required hours, exam route and license status before relying on a training completion record as authority to practice.

Ohio cosmetology and barber examinations
Applicants should use the current Board testing materials for the exact license type. Do not rely on an old school handout or another state’s exam outline.
Before the exam
Confirm eligibility, the scheduled examination, required identification, current candidate instructions and any practical-exam supply requirements.
During the exam
Ohio rules prohibit communication between examinees, written material unless supplied by the Board, and electronic devices in the examination area except a Board-furnished calculator when applicable.
If you do not pass
Use the current retake process for the failed portion or examination and pay the applicable fee. A failed examination can also affect temporary work-permit eligibility.
Ohio temporary pre-examination work permit
A temporary pre-examination work permit is limited supervised authority before examination. It is not a full professional license.
- You must have applied for admission to the applicable examination.
- You must meet the applicable permit conditions.
- An applicant who has already failed the applicable examination does not use the ordinary pre-examination permit route.
- Practice is subject to the supervision required by Ohio law and rule.
- The current permit fee is $15.

Ohio application-abandonment deadlines effective in 2026
Rule 4713-1-16 took effect January 1, 2026. If an application is deemed abandoned, the applicant may have to submit a new application and fee.
6 months: incomplete application
Resolve a notified application deficiency within six months from the date of the notice.
12 months: pass required exam
Pass the necessary examination within 12 months from the date you are initially scheduled to take it.
6 months: exam-eligible inactivity
Do not remain exam-eligible without scheduling or appearing for an examination for six months.
12 months: other requirements
Meet another notified licensing requirement within 12 months from the deficiency notice.
Ohio independent contractor license for booth and suite workers
Do not assume a personal cosmetology or barber license automatically covers independent-contractor activity inside a licensed salon or barber shop. Ohio maintains a separate independent-contractor license.
Current rule makes facility owners responsible for common areas and also makes independent contractors present in the facility responsible for those areas. If an independent contractor controls a locked individual work area, the contractor or an authorized representative must be available to open it within one hour of a Board inspector’s arrival for an inspection or investigation.
