California eliminated the practical licensing examination effective January 1, 2022. After the Board approves the application, the candidate self-schedules the written exam with PSI at an available location and time.

Get Board approval first
You cannot simply book the licensing exam before California approves your examination eligibility.

The April 2026 PSI bulletin tells candidates to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment for check-in and identification verification.
Letter-for-letter identical
Your exam ID must match the name of record with the Board identically, including middle name versus middle initial.
