Alabama Cosmetology License 2026: Get, Renew & Verify

Alabama licensing help • verified August 5, 2026 • independent guide

Choose the Correct Alabama License, Renewal or Transfer Path

Verify a cosmetologist or shop, understand the 2026 renewal situation, complete approved training, use the new online account, prepare for PSI exams, restore an expired credential or transfer a license.

Alabama uses different rules for personal licenses, pending-exam permits, students, apprentices, shops and mobile salons. Check the official record before working, paying a fee or opening a business.

Quick Answer: Most Active Cosmetology Licenses Are Not Due in 2026

Active personal license

Routine renewal is generally in 2027

Cosmetologists renew by the last day of their birth month in odd-numbered years.

Expired in the last four years

Late renewal calculation applies

The law requires lapsed-period renewal fees, the current renewal fee and the late fee.

Expired over four years

Practical exam is required

Use the special reinstatement application rather than sending an ordinary renewal form.

Free-versus-paid warning: Alabama’s public online license lookup is free. Personal license renewal is not free; the current renewal fee is $100, with a $54 late charge after the birth-month deadline.

Prepared phone or email script

“My legal name is [name]. My license, permit or record number is [number]. The public lookup shows [status and expiration]. I submitted [form or payment] on [date]. I need help with [renewal, exam, reciprocity, apprenticeship or shop licensing]. Please confirm the correct form, fee and missing requirement.”

Look Up an Alabama Cosmetology License by Name

The official search covers people, shops and schools. A practitioner and business location should be checked separately.

Search the license number first

The record number is the most precise search value.

Otherwise enter the legal name

Use the first and last name shown on the license, not a nickname or social-media name.

Use an asterisk for a partial search

Place * before or after part of a name when spelling or punctuation is uncertain.

Try “sounds like” matching

The lookup can return approximately matching last names.

Verify the work location

Search the shop or salon separately from the cosmetologist.

Save the complete result

Record the credential type, status, number and expiration date.

Result What it may mean Best next action
Active The credential currently appears valid. Confirm the license type covers the service and check the shop.
Expires in 2027 The license is generally waiting for its next odd-year birth-month renewal. Set a reminder and keep contact details current.
Expired Late renewal or reinstatement is required. Calculate whether the lapse is four years or less or more than four years.
No result Wrong name, old surname, wrong record category or an unissued application. Try wildcard and sounds-like searching before calling the Board.
Free lookup versus certification: public verification is free. Official certification sent to another state costs $25 for each requested state.

Alabama Personal License Renewal in 2026

Cosmetologists and most other personal beauty-license categories expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years.

Active cosmetologist

Next normal renewal: 2027

An active 2025–2027 license is generally not routinely renewed during 2026.

Standard renewal

$100

The renewal fee is nonrefundable.

After the deadline

$54 late charge

The late charge applies when the application is postmarked after the last day of the birth month.

New license issued in 2026: check the actual expiration in the public record. A recently issued license can still enter the next odd-year birth-month cycle.
No reminder exception: moving, changing email or not receiving a renewal notice does not extend the deadline.

Personal versus business renewal cycles

Credential Expiration schedule 2026 meaning
Cosmetologist personal license Last day of birth month in odd years. Routine renewal is generally in 2027.
Class 2 barber personal license Last day of birth month in even years. A barber may be due in 2026, but uses the barber process.
Shop or school license September 30 in odd years; late fee after October 31. Routine business renewal is generally in 2027.

Use Alabama’s New Online Personal-Renewal Account

Usernames and passwords from the former renewal system no longer work. First-time access requires a new account.

Use the link from the Board’s current renewal instructions.

Select “Sign up now”

Create a new account even if you used an older renewal portal.

Verify email and phone

The system sends verification codes to both.

Match the Board record

Enter the legal name, birth details and license information accurately.

Upload required images

Prepare a license photo, current driver’s license and Social Security card.

Review the displayed fee

Confirm whether the transaction includes the $54 late charge.

Print the processed license

Use “Print Licenses” and allow popups if the PDF does not open.

Online preparation checklist

  • Accessible email address.
  • Phone that can receive a verification code.
  • Personal license number.
  • Current personal photograph.
  • Readable driver’s-license image.
  • Readable Social Security card image.
  • Payment method for the displayed amount.
Paper fallback: the Board’s published troubleshooting guidance says some license types and licenses expired before January 31, 2023 may require renewal by mail.
Cannot print the license? The Board can mail a complimentary copy upon request. Renewal payments are not accepted by phone.

Paper Personal-Renewal Checklist

The current paper form was revised in November 2024 and covers the active personal renewal process.

Complete every field

  • Legal first, middle and last name.
  • License number and type.
  • Expiration date and date of birth.
  • Physical and mailing address.
  • Required phone number.
  • Required email address.
  • Licensee signature.

Attach the correct items

  • $100 nonrefundable renewal payment.
  • $54 late fee when applicable.
  • Professional color 2-by-2 passport photo when required.
  • Legal-name-change evidence where applicable.
  • Copy of the complete application for your records.
Photo exception: the form says a new photo is optional when the Board has a photo taken within the previous 10 years.
Postmark controls: keep mailing proof when the birth-month deadline or late fee is disputed.

Renew or Reinstate an Expired Alabama License

Alabama uses a four-year dividing line for reinstatement.

Lapse General requirement Important warning
Four years or less Renewal fees for the lapsed period, current $100 renewal and $54 late fee. Ask the Board to calculate the exact total.
More than four years Prior-license proof, practical exam, capped back fees, current renewal and late fee. Do not send only an ordinary renewal application.

More-than-four-year reinstatement package

  • $130 nonrefundable practical-examination fee.
  • Copy of the expired Alabama license or record ID.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Valid Social Security card.
  • Professional color 2-by-2 passport photo.
  • Name-change documentation where applicable.
  • Final reinstatement payment after passing.
Published final amount: the current reinstatement form instructs the applicant to pay $454 after passing the practical exam. This represents up to $300 in back renewal fees, the $100 current renewal and the $54 late charge.
No work until active: reinstatement paperwork, exam scheduling or payment does not restore authority to practice.

Requirements for a First Alabama Cosmetology License

Age

At least 16

Provide acceptable proof of age.

Education

At least 10 grades

Complete secondary school through the tenth grade or equivalent.

School path

1,500 hours

Complete a Board-licensed or registered cosmetology program.

Do not combine routes: school hours and apprenticeship hours cannot be added together to meet the cosmetology requirement.

2026 distance-learning rule

Up to 50% may be distance learning

A properly licensed school may offer approved hybrid theory or practical education for up to half of the total course work.

Portability warning

The school must warn students that another state may not accept Alabama distance-learning hours for licensure or reciprocity.

  • The school must document distance-learning attendance.
  • Records remain subject to Board inspection.
  • The school’s policy must comply with applicable NACCAS distance-education requirements.
  • A signed portability disclaimer must be kept in the student file.

Standard licensing sequence

Verify the school or apprentice program

Do this before tuition payment or beginning work hours.

Complete the entire required path

Finish 1,500 school hours or 3,000 apprentice hours.

Submit the written-exam application

Include the required identity, education and training records.

Wait for Board eligibility approval

PSI scheduling is not available before approval.

Pass written and practical exams

Complete both during the 24-month eligibility period.

Pay the $50 original-license fee

Follow the instructions provided after examination completion.

Verify active status

Do not rely only on a school completion certificate or examination result.

Can a Cosmetology Student Work After Completing 70%?

Alabama provides a limited student work-permit route that is different from apprenticeship and the pending-exam permit.

Training threshold

70% completed

The student must first complete 70% of the required school instructional hours.

Permit term

Six months

The student work permit expires six months after issuance.

Training credit

No shop-hour credit

Hours worked in the shop do not count toward the 1,500-hour school requirement.

  • Work only when school is not in session.
  • Work in a properly licensed shop in the correct field.
  • Maintain the required Board-issued student permit.
  • Only one student is allowed for each licensee in the shop.
  • Continue completing all remaining school training through the licensed school.
Not an apprenticeship: a school student may not receive an apprentice permit, and ordinary shop employment does not replace school hours.

Alabama Cosmetology Apprenticeship Requirements

The apprentice, sponsor and shop must be approved before the first working hour.

Training total

3,000 hours

Complete the cosmetology curriculum within three years.

Sponsor experience

Five years

The sponsor must hold the same license type and meet the experience requirement.

Reporting deadline

By the 15th

Monthly hours must reach the Board by the fifteenth day of the next month.

Before training begins

  • Be at least 16.
  • Complete at least 10 grades or equivalent.
  • Select a Board-licensed shop.
  • Select a sponsor with the same license type.
  • Submit the apprentice application and $75 fee.
  • Receive the work permit before performing services.

Sponsor and shop obligations

  • Keep daily, monthly and accumulated hour totals.
  • Submit the previous month’s hours by the fifteenth.
  • Keep sponsor and shop licenses current.
  • Ensure an approved sponsor is present whenever services are performed.
  • Display an 8-by-10-inch notice that apprentices or trainees provide services.
  • Return the permit and final hours when the apprenticeship ends.
Late reports receive no credit: hours received with a postmark after the monthly deadline are not credited.
Multiple sponsors: one primary sponsor and approved secondary sponsors are allowed, but the primary sponsor remains responsible for attendance reporting.
Change limit: the rules limit an apprentice to three sponsor changes during training. A changed sponsor or shop requires a new permit and $25 change fee.

Alabama Written and Practical Cosmetology Exams

The Alabama Board approves eligibility. PSI schedules and administers the examinations after approval.

Written exam

$75

The same fee applies to a written retake.

Practical exam

$130

The same fee applies to a practical retake.

Passing grade

70%

Instructor examinations require 80%.

Original license

$50

Paid after completing the required examination path.

Written-exam application checklist

  • Completed Board examination application.
  • Proof of at least tenth-grade education or equivalent.
  • Government-issued photo identification.
  • Social Security card copy.
  • Two-by-two photograph.
  • Official transcript of completed school or apprentice hours.
  • $75 written-examination fee.

Scheduling sequence

Submit the complete application

The Board reviews eligibility first.

Wait for the PSI email

You cannot schedule until the Board approves the application.

Create or access the PSI account

Confirm that the legal name matches your examination identification.

Read the current candidate bulletin

Check identification, arrival, rescheduling, kit and practical-exam requirements.

Complete both examinations

Each must be passed before the eligibility period ends.

Virtual written exam: complete PSI’s system check before scheduling. The Board states that Chromebooks cannot be used.
PSI support: the Board lists 1-800-211-2754 and exam scheduling support through PSI after eligibility approval.

2026 Exam Changes and Pending-Exam Permit

The May 15, 2026 rules replaced the old three-attempt and 375-extra-hour system.

Eligibility period

24 months

Pass all required examinations within 24 months of the original exam application.

Retakes

After results release

Retake an exam after the prior result is released while eligibility remains active.

Eligibility expires

Passed credit is lost

The candidate must reapply and forfeits credit for an earlier passed exam.

Outdated webpage warning: an older Board scheduling page still mentions three written and three practical attempts. The May 15, 2026 amended rule removed that fixed attempt limit and uses the 24-month eligibility period.

Pending-exam permit rules

  • A complete written-exam application triggers the pending-exam permit process.
  • The permit lasts six months.
  • Only one pending-exam permit is issued.
  • The permit cannot be extended.
  • The candidate must receive the permit before performing services.
  • The candidate must stop working when the permit expires unless the original license has been issued.
Two clocks can apply: the pending-exam permit lasts six months, while examination eligibility lasts 24 months. Expiration of the work permit does not necessarily end exam eligibility, but it ends temporary work authority.

Transfer an Out-of-State License to or From Alabama

Alabama’s current public process is called reciprocity. Do not practice under an out-of-state license while waiting.

Moving a license into Alabama

Hold a current out-of-state license

The current transfer page requires an active license in another state.

Request direct certification

The issuing board must send official verification directly to Alabama.

Submit the reciprocity application

Include identity, license and legal-name records.

Pay the $100 application fee

The reciprocity fee is nonrefundable.

Wait for Alabama’s route decision

The Board assigns no exam, practical exam or both written and practical exams.

Verify the Alabama credential

Do not begin ordinary practice until the license is active.

Common reciprocity documents

  • Government-issued photo ID.
  • Social Security card or accepted work-authorization document.
  • Passport-style photograph.
  • Copy of the current out-of-state license.
  • Legal-name-change documentation.
  • Direct certification from the issuing board.
  • Evidence of licensing duration when using the no-exam form.
Possible additional fees: written exam $75 and practical exam $130. Do not pay either until Alabama assigns the examination route.
Compact caution: Alabama law contains Cosmetology Licensure Compact provisions, but the Board’s current public transfer instructions still direct applicants through reciprocity and certification. Use the current Board process unless staff confirms another operational route.

Sending an Alabama record to another state

  • Ask the receiving state where certification must be sent.
  • Complete Alabama’s certification request.
  • Include the current Alabama license.
  • Include the required driver’s license and Social Security card copies.
  • Pay $25 for each receiving state.
  • Keep the request receipt and follow up with the destination board.

Foreign-Trained Cosmetology Applicants

Alabama requires a detailed credential evaluation before determining whether foreign training meets the minimum education hours.

Select an accepted evaluator

Use a member of NACES or AICE.

Request course-by-course evaluation

A general transcript without course hours is not sufficient.

Order two certified reports

Keep one and submit one sealed report to the Board.

Wait for the hour determination

Alabama decides whether additional school or apprentice training is required.

Pass written and practical exams

Both examinations are required for the foreign-trained route.

Payment Amount What it covers
Initial foreign reciprocity $175 Application and written-exam fee.
Practical examination $130 Paid after passing the written examination.
Foreign pending-exam permit: the Board says the permit is valid for six months, cannot be extended and permits work after it is issued.
License timing: after both exams are passed, the Board estimates approximately two to four weeks for license issuance.

Alabama Shop, Salon and Suite Licensing

A personal cosmetology license does not license the business location.

Shop transaction Fee Important requirement
New shop $200 Application, zoning proof, physical inspection and approval.
Shop renewal $150 Odd-year business renewal cycle.
Relocation $50 The new premises must satisfy current requirements.
Name change $25 Update the Board record before using the new name.
Owner change $25 Follow the ownership-change process.

Submit at least 30 days before opening

The Board FAQ instructs applicants to have the new-shop application in the office at least 30 days before the planned opening date.

New-shop application package

  • $200 nonrefundable fee.
  • Each owner’s Social Security card copy.
  • Front and back of each owner’s current driver’s license.
  • Current city or county business license.
  • Business name and physical address.
  • Owner contact information.
  • Services offered.
  • Planned opening date and operating hours.
  • Proof of suitable zoning.
  • Successful physical inspection.

Home-shop requirements

  • Permanent, finished, ceiling-high partition from living quarters.
  • Separate shop entrance from the living-area entrance.
  • Separate restroom entrance from living quarters.
  • No use of the shop as living, dining or sleeping quarters.
  • Compliance with local zoning and building requirements.

Salon suites and business names

Separate entities or names

Independent suite businesses operating under distinct business names generally require separate shop licenses.

One operating entity

One shop license may cover workers operating under the same licensed business entity and name.

Do not open on an application receipt: the rules require physical inspection and approval of the premises before a shop license is issued.

Shop Inspection Preparation

Licensed shops are subject to periodic inspections. Multi-purpose facilities must keep the licensed area compliant.

Required licenses and records

  • Shop license near the main entrance.
  • Active personal license near each workstation.
  • Most recent inspection report near the shop license.
  • Current Board law and rules available.
  • Apprentice permits and hour records when applicable.

Facility readiness

  • Adequate lighting and ventilation.
  • Clean walls, floors, furniture and equipment.
  • Hot and cold water.
  • Compliant restroom within 300 feet unless an exception applies.
  • Covered trash containers.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Correct equipment for every service offered.

Cosmetology-shop minimum equipment

  • One shampoo bowl.
  • One sink near workstations.
  • One shampoo or all-purpose chair.
  • Sufficient hair-drying facilities.
  • One covered trash container.
  • Manicure table, light and chair when manicure services are offered.
  • Facial chair and magnifying glass when esthetics services are offered.
Inspection result Meaning Possible consequence
No required shop license The business is operating without the required credential. Score of zero and possible discipline.
Unlicensed personnel A person is performing regulated services without a license. Score of zero and possible discipline.
Score below 80 Non-license deficiencies require correction. Reinspection.
Second score below 80 Deficiencies remain after reinspection. Violation and possible disciplinary action.
No-charge consultation: the Board states that a representative can provide a shop compliance consultation upon request.

Off-Site Services and Mobile Salons

A personal license does not create unrestricted authority to provide house calls or operate a mobile beauty business.

Narrow client-home exception

All three conditions must apply:

  • The client cannot travel because of illness or physical or mental incapacity.
  • The licensee is employed by a licensed Alabama shop.
  • The appointment is arranged through that licensed shop.
Not a convenience exception: ordinary house calls, weddings, freelance mobile appointments or client preference do not automatically satisfy the rule.

Mobile salon requirements

  • Submit the Board’s mobile-salon application.
  • Pay the applicable business-license fee.
  • Pass a scheduled inspection.
  • Identify the owner, business name and services offered.
  • Meet the required facility, equipment, environment and operating rules.
  • Use properly licensed personnel.
Operator restriction: an apprentice, student or exam candidate may not operate a mobile shop.

Natural Hair Styling Law Changes on October 1, 2026

This change affects people who perform only nonchemical natural-hair services. It does not remove licensing from regulated cosmetology services.

Only natural hair styling

No mandatory Board license

Beginning October 1, 2026, people performing only qualifying natural-hair styling are not required to hold the natural-hair-stylist license.

Voluntary credential

License remains optional

A person may obtain a voluntary natural-hair-stylist license and remain under Board regulation.

Mixed or chemical services

Proper license still required

Cutting, coloring, chemical treatments, skin care and other regulated services remain licensed activities.

Services generally treated as natural hair styling

  • Braiding.
  • Twisting.
  • Weaving.
  • Locking.
  • Similar nonchemical natural-hair techniques.
Business distinction: a business providing only qualifying natural-hair services will not need a Board-issued shop license after the effective date. A business also providing regulated cosmetology services must remain licensed for those services.

Cosmetology Scope, Tools and Sanitation Rules

Alabama cosmetology covers nonmedical hair, nail and skin-care services within the statutory scope. It does not authorize invasive or separately regulated procedures.

Prohibited or restricted items

  • Methyl methacrylate or another banned hazardous product.
  • Styptic pencils.
  • Callus razors, credo blades and skin-cutting foot tools.
  • Craft or hobby tools used for professional services.
  • Equipment used for a purpose other than its intended professional use.
  • Services on visibly broken, inflamed or infected skin.
  • Permanent makeup, tattooing or electrolysis under a cosmetology license.
  • Invasive work that cuts or damages living cells.

Practical sanitation controls

Area Required practice Common failure
Reusable implements Clean and disinfect between clients. Wiping or spraying without complete cleaning and contact time.
Immersion container Use a covered container large enough for full immersion. Part of the tool remains outside the solution.
Clean linens Store in a closed cabinet or covered clean container. Exposure to hair, dust or used items.
Soiled linens Place in a separate closed container. Mixing clean and used linens.
Bulk products Dispense without contaminating the remaining product. Double dipping or using a contaminated applicator.
Skin condition Stop when the service area is broken, inflamed or infected. Continuing because the client requests it.

Complaints, Reviews, Photos and Board Jurisdiction

A Board complaint should identify a possible licensing, scope, sanitation, shop or safety violation. It is not the same as a customer review.

The Board can investigate

  • Unlicensed practice.
  • Unlicensed shop operation.
  • Unlicensed personnel.
  • Sanitation violations.
  • Services outside licensed scope.
  • Prohibited tools or products.
  • False or deceptive licensing claims.

The Board says it does not regulate

  • Service performance or satisfaction alone.
  • Personalities or general behavior.
  • Prices or fees for services.
  • Contracts between students and schools.

Complaint evidence checklist

  • Practitioner and shop names.
  • License numbers and dated lookup screenshots.
  • Incident date, time and location.
  • Clear chronological statement.
  • Receipts and payment records.
  • Advertisements, messages or appointment records.
  • Relevant photographs.
  • Witness information.
  • Signed complaint form where required.
Respondent notice: the paper complaint form states that the person accused receives a copy for response.
Do not use review schema: unstable third-party ratings and comments should not be marked up as Review or AggregateRating for this licensing guide.

Alabama Cosmetology License FAQ

How do I look up an Alabama cosmetology license by name?

Use the official Board verification search. Enter the legal first and last name, try an asterisk for a partial name and use sounds-like matching when spelling is uncertain. Search the shop separately.

Is Alabama cosmetology license verification free?

Yes. Public online lookup is free. Official certification sent to another state costs $25 for each destination state.

Is an Alabama cosmetology license due for renewal in 2026?

Most active cosmetology licenses are not routinely due in 2026. They generally renew by the last day of the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years, making the next ordinary cycle 2027.

How much is Alabama cosmetology license renewal?

The current personal renewal fee is $100. A renewal postmarked after the birth-month deadline adds a $54 late charge.

How many hours are required for an Alabama cosmetology license?

The school route requires 1,500 hours. The approved apprenticeship route requires 3,000 hours completed over three years. The two routes cannot be combined.

Can an Alabama cosmetology student work before graduating?

A student who has completed 70% of the required school hours may qualify for a six-month shop work permit. The work must occur when school is not in session, and shop hours do not count toward the school requirement.

What score is required on Alabama cosmetology exams?

The current administrative rule requires at least 70% on licensing examinations. Instructor examinations require at least 80%.

How long is an Alabama pending-exam permit valid?

The permit is valid for six months, is issued only once and cannot be extended. The candidate must stop working when it expires unless the original license has been issued.

How do I transfer an out-of-state cosmetology license to Alabama?

Hold a current out-of-state license, request direct certification to Alabama, submit the $100 reciprocity application and complete any examination route assigned by the Board.

Does a cosmetologist need a separate Alabama shop license?

Yes, when operating a regulated salon, shop or independently licensed suite. A personal cosmetology license does not license the business premises.

Final Alabama License Checklist

  • Verify the person and shop separately in the official lookup.
  • Use wildcard and sounds-like searching when a legal name is difficult to find.
  • Remember that routine cosmetology renewal generally occurs in 2027, not 2026.
  • Plan for the $100 renewal and $54 late charge when applicable.
  • Create a new online account because old renewal credentials no longer work.
  • Use the paper form when the portal does not support the record.
  • Ask the Board to calculate back fees for a license expired four years or less.
  • Use the practical-exam reinstatement route after more than four years expired.
  • Complete either 1,500 school hours or 3,000 apprentice hours.
  • Confirm the portability of distance-learning hours before planning an interstate transfer.
  • Do not count student shop hours toward school training.
  • Obtain the apprentice permit before the first service.
  • Submit apprentice hours by the fifteenth of the next month.
  • Wait for Board approval before scheduling PSI exams.
  • Score at least 70% and finish both exams within 24 months.
  • Track the separate six-month pending-exam permit deadline.
  • Request direct certification for reciprocity.
  • License and inspect the business location separately.
  • Submit a new-shop application at least 30 days before opening.
  • Do not treat a personal license as unrestricted mobile-service authority.
  • Apply the October 1, 2026 natural-hair change only to qualifying nonchemical services.
