Alabama Cosmetology Renewal 2026: $100 Fee & 2027 Deadline

Alabama renewal help • verified August 21, 2026

Check Your Alabama Renewal Year Before You Pay

Use this guide to renew an Alabama cosmetology license, create the new online-renewal login, understand the $100 fee and $54 late charge, print your renewed license, use the paper form or restore an older expired credential.

Regular cosmetology licenses expire during the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years, so 2026 is not the normal cosmetologist renewal year. Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent guide; Alabama Board records and current forms control your final license status.

Is Your Alabama Cosmetology License Due in 2026?

For a normally current cosmetologist, usually no. Alabama personal licenses for cosmetology and most other Board-regulated practices expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years. Class 2 barber licenses expire during the birth month in even-numbered years.

That means a current cosmetologist generally looks ahead to the appropriate birth month in 2027. A credential that is already expired is different: do not wait until the next normal renewal year. Use the late-renewal or reinstatement route that matches the actual expiration date.

Before paying anything: confirm the license type, expiration date, birth month and whether the record is current, recently expired, under four years expired or more than four years expired.

Alabama Cosmetology Renewal Year and Birth-Month Deadline

Alabama does not renew every personal license in the same calendar year. The current law separates Class 2 barber licenses from other Board-regulated personal licenses.

Credential Normal cycle Expiration What 2026 means
Cosmetologist Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normal next cycle: 2027
Esthetician Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normally not a regular renewal year
Manicurist Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normally not a regular renewal year
Eyebrow Threader Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normally not a regular renewal year
Esthetician / Manicurist Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normally not a regular renewal year
Manicurist / Waxer Odd-numbered years Last day of birth month Normally not a regular renewal year
Class 2 Barber Even-numbered years Last day of birth month Regular renewal year
Late point: an application postmarked after the license expiration date is subject to the current $54 late charge.

Why Can a New Alabama License Need Renewal So Soon?

The $50 original-license payment after licensing is not a two-year renewal payment. Alabama places the new credential into the state’s regular odd/even birth-month cycle.

Example

Cosmetologist licensed in 2026

A cosmetologist’s original credential generally runs to the applicable birth-month expiration in the next odd-numbered year, which is 2027.

Important

A first license can be shorter than two years

Alabama law says no license is valid for more than two years. It does not guarantee that every first credential will remain valid for a full two-year period.

Do not calculate the deadline from the date you paid the original-license fee. Read the actual expiration printed on the issued credential.

Check the License Number and Status Before Renewal

Before submitting a renewal, locate the exact personal credential you are trying to maintain.

Find the Record ID

The Board FAQ describes the license/permit/Record ID as the red number in the upper-right corner of the license or permit.

Check expiration

Use the actual expiration date instead of assuming every cosmetologist is due at the same time.

Verify after renewal

Keep the receipt, print the renewed credential and confirm you are relying on the correct active license before continuing regulated work.

New Alabama Online Renewal Login: Old Credentials Do Not Work

The Board launched a new online personal-license renewal system. Usernames and passwords from the former renewal website are no longer valid.

Open the current Board-linked renewal system

Use the Alabama Board website or the direct portal linked from its current Online Personal License Renewal notice.

Select “Sign up now”

Do this on your first visit to the new system instead of repeatedly entering an old username and password.

Enter a valid email address

The Board says this does not necessarily have to be the same email address previously stored on your license record.

Enter a phone number you can access

The account-creation process sends verification codes to both the email address and phone number.

Complete both verification steps

Do not create another account merely because one code is delayed.

Old search-result warning: an older Board renewal page still contains limitations from a previous renewal system. The Board’s Summer 2026 newsletter specifically directs 2026 barber renewals through the new online personal-renewal platform, so use the newest Board instructions when older pages conflict.

What to Prepare Before Alabama Online Renewal

Prepare identity and license information first so you do not have to abandon the transaction halfway through.

License information

  • Legal name.
  • Personal license or Record ID number.
  • Exact license type.
  • Expiration date.
  • Date of birth.
  • Current physical address.
  • Mailing address if different.
  • Working phone and email.

Documents worth having ready

  • Clear passport-style color photo.
  • Current driver’s license or government-issued ID.
  • Actual Social Security card if the current portal requests it.
  • Marriage certificate, divorce decree or updated ID for a legal-name change.
Portal-document caution: a still-live Board renewal page instructs users to have photos of a current driver’s license and Social Security card ready for upload. Because the Board has since launched the newer renewal platform, follow the document fields shown by the live portal rather than uploading sensitive documents anywhere else.

How to Renew an Alabama Cosmetology License Online

Use this workflow when your personal license is actually eligible for renewal or the Board has directed you to renew an expired credential through the personal-renewal system.

Check the year, license type and expiration

A current cosmetologist normally does not have a regular 2026 renewal. Confirm that you are not accidentally paying for the wrong cycle.

Open the new renewal portal

Use the portal linked from the official Alabama Board website.

Create the new account

Choose “Sign up now” if you have not used the new system before.

Verify email and phone

Complete the verification-code steps before trying to locate or renew the credential.

Select the correct personal license

Match your name, license type and Record ID before continuing.

Review and update required information

Check contact information, photo requirements, identity documents and any other fields presented by the live portal.

Confirm the amount before payment

Regular personal renewal is $100. A simple late personal renewal can be $154, but older expired licenses may owe more.

Submit once and save the receipt

The Board says personal renewal fees are non-refundable. Do not make a second payment merely because the PDF does not appear immediately.

Open “Print Licenses”

After payment processes, use the Print Licenses menu to download the renewed credential as a PDF.

After Payment: Print and Display the Renewed License

Online renewal is not finished from a practical standpoint until you can access the renewed credential and display it properly.

1

Wait for payment processing

The Board says the renewed license becomes printable after the renewal payment has processed.

2

Open Print Licenses

Use the menu inside the logged-in account to access the PDF.

3

Allow popups

If nothing opens, disable the browser’s popup blocker for the renewal website and try again.

4

Print and display

The Summer 2026 Board newsletter says online-renewed licenses should be printed in color and displayed at the workstation.

Cannot print? The Board says it will mail a complimentary copy upon request when a licensee is unable to print the online license. Contact the Board by phone.

Transaction Current fee What it means

Late charge $54 Added after the renewal deadline.
Simple late personal renewal $154 $100 current renewal plus $54 late fee when no additional missed-cycle fee is due.
Duplicate license $25 Replacement credential and certain out-of-cycle name-change situations.
Letter of certification $25 per state Used when transferring/certifying the Alabama credential to another state.
Practical examination $130 Relevant to certain examination and 4+ year reinstatement situations.
Shop renewal $150 Separate business-license renewal.
School renewal $200 Separate school-license renewal.
Non-refundable warning: verify the credential, renewal period and amount before paying. Older lapsed licenses can owe more than $154.

Does Alabama Require CE for Cosmetology Renewal?

The current Alabama personal-license renewal form does not list routine continuing-education hours among its standard cosmetology renewal requirements.

Current form focuses on

  • Complete personal renewal form.
  • Correct renewal fee.
  • Required phone number.
  • Required email address.
  • Current qualifying photograph when needed.
  • Name-change proof when applicable.
  • Licensee signature for paper submission.

Do not make these assumptions

  • Do not import CE requirements from another state.
  • Do not assume a private CE seller controls Alabama renewal eligibility.
  • Do not confuse exam training with renewal continuing education.
If your exact credential or future Board instructions add another requirement, follow the current Alabama Board transaction rather than this article or an older saved form.

How to Renew an Alabama Cosmetology License by Mail

The Board continues to accept mailed personal-license renewals. Its current Forms page lists the 2025–2027 Personal License Renewal form.

Current form asks for

  • Last name, first name and middle initial.
  • License number.
  • License type.
  • Expiration date.
  • Date of birth.
  • Physical address.
  • Mailing address if different.
  • Required phone number.
  • Required email address.
  • Licensee signature and date.

Include with the paper form

Regular documents

  • Completed current renewal application.
  • $100 non-refundable personal renewal payment when regular renewal applies.
  • One 2×2 professional color passport photo when a new photo is required.

When circumstances changed

  • Marriage/divorce document or updated driver’s license / Social Security card for a legal-name change.
  • $54 late charge when the submission is postmarked after the deadline.
  • Additional back-renewal amounts when an older license has missed more than one cycle.
10-year photo exception: the current renewal form says a new photo is optional when the Board already has a photo on file that was taken within the previous 10 years.
Mail deadline: the application must be postmarked by the last day of the licensee’s birth month to avoid the $54 late charge. The current form also states that the Board is not responsible for mail delivery.

Mailing address

Alabama Board of Cosmetology & Barbering
P.O. Box 301750
Montgomery, AL 36130-1750

Paper payment instruction: follow the payment methods stated on the current renewal form. Do not mail cash or card details unless a current Board form specifically instructs you to do so.

Renew an Alabama License in Person

The Board also accepts license renewals in person at its Montgomery office.

Physical office

RSA Union Building

100 North Union Street, Suite 324
Montgomery, AL 36104

Public hours

8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday, except Alabama state holidays.

Renewal payments are not processed over the phone. Use the eligible online, mail or in-person route.

Change Your Name or Address During Alabama Renewal

Correct your record before relying on the renewed credential, especially when the name printed on the license no longer matches your legal identification.

Change During renewal Outside renewal
Legal name Provide proof such as a marriage license, driver’s license or divorce certificate. The Board FAQ says there is no extra name-change fee when handled during renewal. Use the duplicate personal-license process; the current duplicate fee is $25.
Address Use your current address on the renewal. Notify the Board promptly in writing or use its Personal License Name/Address Change form.

Alabama License Expired Less Than Four Years

An expired credential can generally be reinstated within four years, but the amount due depends on how many renewal periods have lapsed.

Alabama law states that an expired license may be reinstated within four years by paying renewal fees for the lapsed period + the current renewal fee + a late fee.

Find the exact expiration date

Use the issued credential or Board record rather than guessing which cycles were missed.

Count missed renewal periods

A one-cycle late license and a license close to four years expired can owe different amounts.

Determine the current renewal amount

The Board’s current personal renewal fee is $100 and the late charge is $54.

Confirm the calculated amount

Use the current Board transaction or contact Personal License Renewals before submitting a non-refundable payment.

Wait for valid status

Do not work merely because the payment was submitted. An expired credential is not converted into an active credential by the receipt alone.

License Expired More Than Four Years: Practical Exam Route

A license expired for more than four years is no longer a normal renewal. The current Board Forms page still links a separate reinstatement application for this situation.

Before examination

$130 practical-exam fee

The Board’s currently linked reinstatement form requires this non-refundable examination payment with the initial reinstatement application.

After passing

$454 reinstatement amount

The currently linked form states that this amount is paid after successful completion of the practical examination.

Current Board-form checklist

  • $130 non-refundable practical examination fee.
  • Proof of prior Alabama licensing, such as an expired license or Record ID.
  • Copy of current driver’s license.
  • Copy of valid Social Security card.
  • One 2×2 color passport photo.
  • Marriage license, divorce decree or other evidence for a legal-name change.
  • Wait for work-permit and examination information after the application is processed.
  • Pass the practical examination.
  • Pay the reinstatement amount required after passing.
Current-form total: the Board’s linked form shows $130 before the practical exam and $454 after passing, for a potential $584 in those two Board/exam payments. This is not the cost of an ordinary late renewal.
Form-age note: the reinstatement PDF is revised April 2020, but the Board’s current 2026 Forms page still links it as the form for licenses expired more than four years. Because this is a high-cost transaction, verify the amount with Personal License Renewals before mailing payment.

Personal License vs Shop and School Renewal

A practitioner renewal and a business-license renewal are separate transactions with different fees and deadlines.

Credential Renewal fee Expiration cycle Late point
Cosmetology personal license $100 Birth month in odd-numbered years After last day of birth month
Shop $150 September 30 in odd-numbered years After October 31
School $200 September 30 in odd-numbered years After October 31
2026 business check: normal shop and school cycles run through September 30, 2027 after the 2025–2027 renewal. Do not pay a shop or school renewal fee when you are trying to maintain a personal cosmetology credential.

Natural Hair Styling Changes on October 1, 2026

This change is relevant if the credential you are trying to renew is specifically a Natural Hair Stylist license.

Effective October 1, 2026, Alabama’s new law exempts people who perform only natural hair styling services from mandatory Board licensure. Current Natural Hair Stylist licensees may continue renewing voluntarily if they choose to remain licensed and regulated by the Board.

This change does not eliminate the ordinary cosmetologist license or convert full cosmetology services into unlicensed activity. It applies to the specific natural-hair-styling scope addressed by the 2026 law.

2026 Exam Rule Change for Reinstatement Candidates

This is not an ordinary renewal requirement, but it matters when an expired-license route requires testing.

New eligibility period

24 months

Effective May 15, 2026, candidates must pass all required examinations within 24 months of the original examination-application date or reapply to test.

Removed rule

No automatic extra 375 hours after third failure

The Board removed the former additional-training rule tied to the third failed examination attempt.

If the 24-month eligibility period expires, the candidate must reapply to test and previously passed examination credit is forfeited under the updated rule.

High-Cost Alabama Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

Renewing a current cosmetologist in the wrong year

Ordinary cosmetologist renewal is tied to odd-numbered years, not simply “every 2026.”

Using the old portal login

Old usernames and passwords do not work in the new personal-renewal system.

Paying $154 for a multi-cycle lapse

The $154 combination applies to a simple $100 renewal plus one $54 late charge. Older lapses may owe additional renewal fees.

Waiting until 2027 with an already expired license

An expired license needs the applicable late or reinstatement route now.

Submitting a second payment when the PDF does not open

Try Print Licenses and popup settings first; then contact the Board with the first receipt.

Mailing an incomplete form

Phone, email, signature, applicable photo, payment and name-change documents all matter.

Assuming original-license fee covers two full years

The first license enters Alabama’s established birth-month renewal cycle.

Confusing a shop license with personal renewal

Shop renewal is a separate $150 business transaction.

Practicing from an expired credential

Payment confirmation is not a substitute for the required valid license status.

Alabama Cosmetology License Renewal FAQs

Do Alabama cosmetologists renew in 2026?

Normally, no. Alabama cosmetology and most non-barber personal licenses expire during the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years. A normally current cosmetologist therefore renews again during the appropriate birth month in 2027. An already expired license should be handled now through the applicable late or reinstatement route.

How much is Alabama cosmetology license renewal?

The current personal-license renewal fee is $100. The Board’s current fee schedule lists a $54 late charge.

How much is a late Alabama cosmetology renewal?

A simple one-cycle late renewal can total $154: $100 personal renewal plus the $54 late charge. A license that missed additional renewal cycles may owe more.

When is my Alabama cosmetology renewal deadline?

For cosmetologists, the ordinary license expiration is the last day of the licensee’s birth month in an odd-numbered year. Paper renewals postmarked after the expiration date are subject to the late fee.

Can I use my old Alabama renewal username and password?

No. The Board says usernames and passwords from the previous personal-renewal website are no longer valid. Use “Sign up now” to create an account in the new system and complete email and phone verification.

How do I print my Alabama license after online renewal?

After payment has processed, log in and use the Print Licenses menu to download the PDF. If the license does not open, allow browser popups. The Board’s Summer 2026 newsletter says online-renewed licenses should be printed in color and displayed at the workstation.

Can I renew my Alabama cosmetology license by phone?

No. The Board says it does not process renewal payments by phone. Eligible renewals can be handled online, by mail or in person.

Does Alabama require continuing education for cosmetology renewal?

The current Alabama personal-license renewal form does not list routine continuing-education hours among its standard cosmetology renewal requirements. Follow the current Board instructions for your exact credential.

What happens if my Alabama cosmetology license has been expired more than four years?

The Board uses a separate reinstatement process. Its currently linked form requires a $130 practical-exam fee, supporting identity and prior-license documents, passing the practical examination, and then the reinstatement amount required by the Board. The linked form currently states $454 after passing.

What is the Alabama Board of Cosmetology phone number for personal renewals?

The Board staff directory lists Personal License Renewals at 334-242-1947 and personal.license@aboc.alabama.gov. The general Board phone is 334-242-1918, and the toll-free number is 1-800-815-7453.

Final Alabama Renewal Checklist

  • Confirm the exact license type before paying.
  • Check the actual expiration date and birth month.
  • Remember that ordinary cosmetology renewals occur in odd-numbered years.
  • Do not wait until 2027 if the credential is already expired.
  • Create a new account in the current online-renewal system instead of using an old login.
  • Keep access to both your email and phone for verification codes.
  • Prepare a current passport-style photo and requested identity documents.
  • Check whether your fee is $100, a simple $154 late total or a larger reinstatement amount.
  • Save the payment confirmation before closing the portal.
  • Use Print Licenses and allow browser popups after online renewal.
  • Print the renewed credential in color and display it near the workstation as required.
  • Use the current paper form and correct P.O. Box when mailing.
  • Contact Personal License Renewals before submitting a duplicate payment.
  • For a 4+ year lapse, use the separate Board reinstatement and practical-exam route.
