Alabama Cosmetology License Lookup: Verify a Professional, Shop or School
Use the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering’s official public search to verify a cosmetologist, Class 2 barber, esthetician, manicurist, regulated shop, private school or other Board credential.
The state search accepts a first name, last name, shop name, school name or license number. It also supports wildcard searches when you do not know the full spelling.
Fast Answer: Use Alabama’s Official License Verification Database
The Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering provides a public credential-search system. Search the exact license number when you have it. Otherwise use a person’s name, shop name or school name and open the matching record before drawing conclusions about licensing status.
How to Perform an Alabama Cosmetology License Lookup
Start with the Board’s own public verification system rather than a private directory, social profile or photograph of an old license.
Open the official Alabama search
Use the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering’s public License Verification system.
Use the strongest identifier you have
Enter the license number when available. If you do not know it, use the person’s first or last name, the shop name or the school name.
Use fewer fields when necessary
If a search does not return the expected credential, remove unnecessary information and try the strongest single identifier first.
Try Alabama’s wildcard feature
When the spelling is incomplete or uncertain, place an asterisk at the beginning or end of a name search.
Open the matching credential
Confirm that the result actually belongs to the professional, shop or school you intended to verify.
Match the credential to the service
Do not assume every beauty-related credential covers every regulated service. Check the license category shown in the state record.
Search the establishment separately
If shop licensing matters, run a separate shop search rather than treating the professional’s personal credential as proof of business licensure.
What Can You Enter in the Alabama License Search?
The live Alabama Board search currently provides five main search options.
First Name
Useful when combined with a last name or when narrowing a common surname.
Last Name
The official search states that the Last Name field also looks for “sounds like” matches.
Shop Name
Use the licensed business name when verifying an Alabama salon, shop or independent suite.
School Name
Use this when checking a private school regulated by the Alabama Board.
License Number
When the exact number is available, it is usually the cleanest starting point for avoiding similar names.
Use Alabama’s Wildcard Search When the Name Is Incomplete
The official verification system allows wildcard searches in name properties by placing an asterisk at the beginning or end of the text.
Partial surname
If you know only part of a surname, use the wildcard method instead of repeatedly guessing the full spelling.
Business-name variation
A shop may be licensed under a legal or registered name that differs slightly from the branding shown on social media.
“Sounds like” matches
The Alabama search also says the Last Name field checks for similar-sounding names, which can help with spelling variations.
Which Alabama Cosmetology Credentials Can You Verify?
The Alabama Board regulates several professional and establishment categories. Check the exact credential relevant to the service or business you are reviewing.
| Credential or record | Board relationship | Why verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetologist | Regulated by ABOCB | Verify the individual credential for regulated hair, nail and skin-care practice within its scope. |
| Class 2 Barber | Regulated by ABOCB | Confirm the Alabama-regulated barber credential. Class 1 barbers are not regulated by this Board. |
| Esthetician | Regulated by ABOCB | Check the individual credential when regulated esthetic services are involved. |
| Manicurist / Manicurist-Waxer | Regulated by ABOCB | Match the exact specialty credential to the service being offered. |
| Eyebrow Threader | Regulated by ABOCB | Verify the applicable Board credential when threading falls within current Board regulation. |
| Natural Hair Stylist | Law changes Oct. 1, 2026 | Do not interpret the absence of a mandatory credential after the effective date without reading the new Alabama exemption. |
| Shop / Salon | Board-regulated when required | Verify the establishment separately from the individual practitioner. |
| Private School | Regulated by ABOCB | Use the School Name search when checking a private Board-regulated program. |
Individual License vs. Shop License vs. School Record
Search the practitioner
Use first name, last name or license number to verify the person providing the regulated service.
Search the shop
Use the actual shop or salon name. A licensed professional working inside a business does not automatically prove the business itself holds the required shop license.
Search the private school
ABOCB regulates private schools teaching Board-regulated practices. Public schools fall under the Alabama Department of Education rather than the Board’s private-school licensing role.
How to Read an Alabama License Result Safely
A matching name alone is not enough. Compare the state record with the exact person, shop or school you are checking.
Match the identity
- Compare the displayed name carefully.
- Use the credential number when available.
- Watch for people or businesses with similar names.
- Consider former or updated legal names when appropriate.
Match the credential
- Confirm the credential category fits the service being checked.
- Read the current information actually displayed by Alabama’s record.
- Search the shop separately when establishment licensing applies.
- Contact the Board when the record conflicts with a current paper credential.
Alabama License Not Found? Try These Fixes First
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No result for the full name | Spelling, formatting or legal-name differences | Use fewer fields, try a wildcard or search by license number. |
| Too many similar names | Common surname or broad search | Add the first name or use the exact license number. |
| Shop does not appear | You may be using the building name or marketing name instead of the licensed business name. | Ask for the shop license name or number and search again. |
| Professional appears but shop does not | Personal and shop licensing are separate. | Do not treat the professional record as proof of shop licensure. |
| School does not appear | It may use another legal name or may be a public-school program outside the Board’s private-school role. | Confirm the school’s exact name and regulator. |
| Paper license and database disagree | The paper credential may be old, replaced or from a different renewal period. | Use the current official record and contact ABOCB when the discrepancy matters. |
| Natural-hair-only provider has no credential after Oct. 1, 2026 | Alabama’s new statutory exemption may apply. | Check the exact services against the new law before assuming a violation. |
If careful searching still does not resolve the issue, contact the Alabama Board instead of making a final licensing conclusion from a failed search.
Public License Lookup vs. Formal Alabama License Certification
The online lookup and a Letter of Certification serve different purposes.
| Need | Use | Current Board information |
|---|---|---|
| Check a credential online | Public License Verification | Use the Board’s public search. |
| Have Alabama certify your license to another state | License Certification Request | $25 per state requested. |
| Request broader government documents | Public Records Request | Current Board rules use a $30 initial research fee, with additional applicable costs. |
Use the Lookup Before Renewing an Alabama License
Checking the official record before renewal helps you confirm the exact credential and expiration cycle.
Alabama cosmetologists, estheticians, manicurists, eyebrow threaders, esthetician/manicurists and manicurist/waxers normally renew during the licensee’s birth month in odd-numbered years. Class 2 barbers use even-numbered years.

Natural Hair Styling Rules Change October 1, 2026
Alabama Senate Bill 183 becomes effective October 1, 2026. That date is important when interpreting an Alabama license search for a provider who performs only natural hair styling.
Natural-hair-only providers
People who perform only natural hair styling as defined by Alabama law will no longer be required to hold a Board license solely for that activity.
Facilities where only that exempt natural-hair styling is performed are also covered by the statutory change.
Services outside the exemption
The exemption does not turn cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, chemical treatment or other separately regulated cosmetology activity into exempt natural-hair styling.
A voluntary Natural Hair Stylist license remains available under the new law.
How to Check an Alabama Salon Suite
Salon suites create a common verification problem because the name on the building may not be the same as the independently operated business inside a suite.
The Board says that when independent contractors operate separate cosmetology businesses under different business names, each separate business generally needs its own shop license.
Ask for the actual business name
Do not search only the name of the suite complex or building.
Search the individual practitioner
Verify the professional credential separately.
Search the suite business
Use the business name associated with the independently operated shop.
Contact ABOCB when the arrangement is unclear
Different ownership or operating arrangements can affect whether a separate shop license is required.
License Verification Is Not the Same as Filing a Complaint
If your concern involves an apparent licensing violation, health and safety issue or another matter within Board jurisdiction, use the lookup as an initial verification step and then follow Alabama’s separate complaint process when appropriate.
Complaint route
The Board provides an online complaint process and a complaint form. The Board states that anonymous complaints are not acknowledged.
Jurisdiction limits
The Board says it does not have jurisdiction over ordinary service performance, personalities or behavior, fees charged for services, or contracts between students and schools.
Alabama Board Scam Warning: Do Not Pay a Caller Demanding a License Fee
The Alabama Board warns that it will not contact a shop or licensee by phone or in person requesting payment for license renewals, fines or other fees. The Board says requests involving money due are sent in writing on official documents.

Alabama Cosmetology License Lookup FAQs
How do I look up an Alabama cosmetology license?
Open the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering’s official License Verification system. Search by first name, last name, shop name, school name or license number, then open the matching credential.
Can I search an Alabama cosmetology license by license number?
Yes. License Number is one of the official Alabama search fields and is usually the strongest identifier when you already know the exact number.
Can I search an Alabama salon or shop license online?
Yes. Alabama’s verification system includes Shop Name as a search field. Search the shop separately from the professional because personal and shop credentials are separate records.
Can I search an Alabama cosmetology school online?
Yes. The official verification form includes School Name. ABOCB regulates private schools teaching Board-regulated practices; public schools are regulated through the Alabama Department of Education.
What if I do not know the exact spelling of the licensee’s name?
Alabama’s official system allows an asterisk at the beginning or end of a name as a wildcard. The system also states that the Last Name search checks for similar-sounding matches.
Why can’t I find an Alabama cosmetology license?
Try fewer search fields, use the exact license number when available, try Alabama’s wildcard option, check for a legal-name or business-name difference and make sure you are searching the correct person, shop or school. Contact ABOCB if the record still cannot be matched.
Is Alabama’s public lookup the same as a license certification?
No. The public lookup is an online credential search. A License Certification Request is a formal Board service used when Alabama must certify a credential to another state or licensing authority. The current certification fee is $25 per state requested.
Do Alabama cosmetologists renew in 2026?
Normally current cosmetologists renew during their birth month in odd-numbered years, so the next normal cosmetologist cycle is 2027. Class 2 barbers use even-numbered renewal years.
Will natural hair stylists need an Alabama license after October 1, 2026?
People performing only natural hair styling as defined by Alabama’s new law will not be required to hold a Board license solely for that activity beginning October 1, 2026. Services outside that statutory natural-hair scope can still require the appropriate credential.
Do salon suites need separate Alabama shop licenses?
The Board says independently operated cosmetology businesses using different business names generally need their own shop licenses. Search the actual business name used by the suite operator rather than only the name of the building.
What is the Alabama Board of Cosmetology phone number?
The Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering lists 334-242-1918 as its main number and 1-800-815-7453 as its toll-free number. The general email is cosmetology@aboc.alabama.gov.
