Verify the Illinois License Record Before You Renew, Hire or Book
Illinois IDFPR provides free public primary-source license verification. Search a cosmetologist, teacher, salon, shop or school by the strongest information you have, then check the credential type, status, expiration and public disciplinary information before relying on an old certificate or screenshot.
For license holders, this guide also explains the September 30, 2027 cosmetologist renewal date, current $50 fee, 14-hour CE rules, fully online CE change, first-renewal exceptions, certified copies, CORE, expired-license recovery and common IDFPR account problems.

Illinois License Lookup: Fast Answers
Free
No CORE login, renewal PIN or paid commercial verification service is required.
Updated daily
IDFPR identifies its Single License Lookup as primary-source verification.
September 30, 2027
Ordinary cosmetologist licenses follow the odd-numbered-year cycle.
$50
The current fee rule charges $25 per license year for the two-year license.
14 hours
Required during the two-year prerenewal period unless an applicable exemption or waiver applies.
Full total allowed
The old 50% online cap is not the current rule.
$20 category
IDFPR charges $20 for most professions; use certification only when a sealed official document is required.
Do not keep working
Illinois rules treat practice on an expired cosmetology license as unlicensed activity.
How to Search an Illinois Cosmetology License Online
Use IDFPR Professional Regulation License Lookup. Start with the strongest identifier you have and avoid adding unnecessary filters.
Open Professional Regulation License Lookup
Cosmetologists are regulated through IDFPR’s Division of Professional Regulation.
Use the license number when available
An exact license number is generally the fastest way to isolate the intended record.
Otherwise start with the legal last name
Add a first name only when the last-name search returns too many records.
Use Legal Business Name for an entity
Do not place a salon, school or shop name in the individual First Name or Last Name fields.
Open the complete result
Confirm the credential type, license number, status, effective dates, expiration and public discipline information.
Save dated evidence
Use Printable View when employment, a salon arrangement, a service appointment or compliance review depends on status.
What IDFPR License Lookup Can Show
| Public field | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Credential details | Confirms which professional record you opened. | Make sure it is the cosmetology-related credential you intended to check. |
| Name | Similar names can belong to different licensees. | Compare the complete IDFPR-listed name. |
| City, state and ZIP | Helps separate records with similar names. | Do not mistake this limited public location information for the person’s full home address. |
| License number | It is the strongest ongoing identifier. | Save it for future searches. |
| License type | Cosmetologist, teacher, salon/shop and school records are not interchangeable. | Confirm the license type matches the person, business or service. |
| Status | An old printed license may no longer reflect the current record. | If status is not clearly active, investigate before allowing regulated work. |
| Effective dates | Shows timing connected to the credential. | Check both current and first-effective information where displayed. |
| Expiration | A license valid today can expire before a later work or service date. | Recheck when the relevant date crosses expiration. |
| Disciplinary action | Public discipline can affect a licensing or hiring decision. | Use IDFPR’s records process when the actual disciplinary documents are needed. |
| Other licenses | One person can hold more than one Illinois professional credential. | Do not assume one license automatically covers every service. |
No Illinois Cosmetology License Result? Try These Fixes
Enter less information
IDFPR specifically recommends reducing the number of search fields when no result appears.
Try the formal and commonly used first name
A license may be registered as Robert while the person normally uses Bob, or under a first name instead of the middle name used socially.
Try surname spacing
IDFPR gives the example of searching both McDaniel and Mc Daniel.
Try a prior legal name
A marriage, divorce or legal name change may make an older document different from the current IDFPR record.
Use Legal Business Name for a salon or school
An entity search belongs in the business field, not the person’s name fields.
Clear the state filter
An Illinois licensee can reside outside Illinois. Selecting Illinois as the location can hide an otherwise valid Illinois credential.
Check recent processing timing
If the license was just issued or renewed, allow the appropriate posting period before assuming the record is missing.
How Fast Does Illinois License Lookup Update?
There is not one universal waiting period. The correct expectation depends on whether you are looking at a newly issued license, a renewal or the bulk dataset.
| Situation | Official timing guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Single License Lookup database | Updated daily | Use it for the most current routine primary-source verification. |
| Newly issued license | Allow up to 24 hours after issuance to become visible | Do not create a duplicate application during that initial posting period. |
| Processed online renewal | Paperless FAQ says typically 1–2 business days after processing | Recheck the public record after processing. |
| Cosmetology renewal page | IDFPR advises allowing 2–4 business days for posting/status update | Use this more conservative window before escalating a cosmetology renewal problem. |
| Bulk License Lookup | IDFPR describes bulk data updates as weekly | Use Single License Lookup when a same-day decision requires the freshest available record. |
| Active License Report | Updated monthly | Use for informational analysis—not official verification. |
Free Primary-Source Lookup vs. Certified License Document
IDFPR License Lookup
- Free.
- No licensing-account login required.
- Updated daily for Single License Lookup.
- Approved by IDFPR for primary-source verification.
- Includes public status and expiration information.
- Printable View available.
Certification of Licensure
- IDFPR charges $20 for most professions.
- Includes Department seal and official signature.
- Includes license number and current status.
- Includes issue and expiration dates.
- Includes method of licensure.
- Includes disciplinary action when applicable.
When certification is worth paying for
Order a Certification of Licensure when another licensing authority, institution or formal credentialing process specifically requests an IDFPR-certified document rather than ordinary online verification.
How long does online certification take?
IDFPR says online certification for available professions is sent by email within 72 hours. Online certification is not available for a license that has discipline, so the paper route may be necessary in that situation.
If License Lookup Shows Discipline: Get the Right Record
License Lookup can show that disciplinary action exists. When you need the underlying order or disciplinary documents, IDFPR directs users to the Freedom of Information Act process.
Use License Lookup
Do not file a FOIA request merely to determine whether the credential currently appears licensed.
Use Certification
Certification provides the Department seal, official signature and license-history information.
Use FOIA
IDFPR specifically directs requests for disciplinary documents to its public-records process.
Salon Owners and Employers: Verify Multiple Illinois Licenses
For one employee, Single License Lookup is usually the cleanest choice. For larger compliance work, IDFPR also publishes Professional Licensing data through Illinois Open Data.
Useful dataset fields
- License Type.
- Description.
- License Number.
- License Status.
- First, middle and last name.
- Business Name and DBA.
- Original Issue Date.
- Effective Date.
When bulk data helps
- Reviewing a salon workforce roster.
- Filtering a larger group by license type.
- Exporting records for compliance review.
- Researching professional-license populations.
- Checking several entities without repeating manual searches.

Use dataset filters to isolate cosmetology records, names, license numbers or status fields.
Use Single Lookup for a final time-sensitive check
IDFPR says Single Lookup updates daily while Bulk Lookup updates weekly.
How to Print an Illinois Cosmetology License
Illinois uses paperless professional licensing. A license holder can retrieve an electronic license without buying a private duplicate certificate.
Check public status first
Especially after renewal or restoration, verify that IDFPR has processed the transaction.
Open Print My License
Use IDFPR’s electronic-license service.
Use the matching credential field
Enter the Renewal PIN or electronic Access ID only in the field labeled for that credential.
Download the PDF
Save a local copy before closing the page.
Use a current PDF reader if the document looks blank
IDFPR’s paperless FAQ recommends Adobe Acrobat Reader when license or pocket-card information does not render correctly.
Illinois Cosmetology Renewal Date: Why 2026 Is Different
Cosmetologist licenses expire September 30 of odd-numbered years.
Cosmetology teacher, clinic-teacher and school licenses expire on the even-numbered-year schedule.
Do not wait for the 2027 cycle when the current record already shows expired or inactive status.
When will the 2027 portal open?
Illinois Rule 1175.425 says a cosmetologist may renew during the month preceding the September 30 expiration. IDFPR’s general online-renewal page also says online renewal can become available approximately two to three months before the expiration shown on a license.
Illinois Cosmetology License Renewal Requirements
For a normal later cosmetologist renewal that is not exempt, prepare the renewal application, applicable continuing education and the state renewal fee.
Every 2 years
Ordinary cosmetologist licenses expire September 30 in odd-numbered years.
$50
The rule charges $25 per license year.
14 hours
Complete qualifying CE within the two-year prerenewal period unless an exemption applies.
Verify status
Allow processing, then confirm the new expiration in public License Lookup.
Current 14-hour structure
| Requirement | Current guidance | User action |
|---|---|---|
| Sexual Harassment Prevention | 1 hour during each renewal cycle, beginning with the first renewal | Keep evidence of qualifying training. |
| Profession-specific subjects | 13 additional hours for a normal nonexempt cosmetologist renewal | Use an approved sponsor and accepted cosmetology subject areas. |
| Domestic Violence / Sexual Assault Awareness | IDFPR’s fact sheet identifies a one-hour initial-renewal requirement for covered non-barber licenses | Use an approved domestic-violence education provider and follow the live renewal prompts. |
| Abnormal Skin Growth Education | One-time requirement when the statutory 2026 trigger applies | Keep the approved completion certificate and provide it when required. |
Illinois Cosmetology Renewal Requirements: What Changed After 2025?
Search results still surface older CE instructions. The October 6, 2025 administrative-rule amendment materially changed how online continuing education can be completed.
Full CE total may be online
A licensee may earn the total required renewal or restoration hours through in-person courses and qualifying online individual-study courses.
Exam required
An approved online individual-study course must include an examination and a way to verify successful completion.
Skin-growth education
A new one-time abnormal-skin-growth education requirement now affects qualifying applications, renewals and restorations.
2026 abnormal-skin-growth course
IDFPR’s current statement says people filing an original application on or after January 1, 2026, and people licensed before January 1, 2026 when filing their first renewal or restoration on or after that date, must provide proof of approved abnormal-skin-growth education.
Until implementing rules are fully operational, IDFPR identifies the online Skinny on Skin program from IMPACT Melanoma as an approved option and instructs applicants to provide the completion certificate with the applicable filing.
First Illinois Cosmetology Renewal: Do Not Automatically Buy 14 Hours
Illinois Rule 1175.425 exempts a licensee from the profession-specific CE requirement for the first renewal after the original license is issued.
First-renewal exemption
- The normal 14-hour profession-specific requirement is waived for the first renewal after original licensure.
- Do not buy a standard 14-hour package automatically just because a private page tells every cosmetologist to do so.
- Confirm that the renewal you are completing is truly your first renewal after original issuance.
Training can still apply
- IDFPR’s June 2026 fact sheet says sexual-harassment-prevention training begins with the first renewal.
- The same fact sheet discusses domestic-violence and sexual-assault awareness for an applicable initial renewal.
- The abnormal-skin-growth requirement can also be triggered at the first renewal filed on or after January 1, 2026.
How to Choose Illinois Cosmetology License Renewal Classes
Confirm whether profession-specific CE applies
Check first-renewal status, restoration status and any approved waiver before buying a package.
Search the sponsor in IDFPR’s current BCENT list
Do not rely only on a provider’s marketing page or an old approval screenshot.
Check the course topic
Illinois only recognizes appropriate scope-of-practice, sanitary-standard, business-practice and other approved subject areas.
Check the online-course structure
Qualifying online individual-study courses must include an examination and completion-verification method.
Use the correct special-course provider
Domestic-violence education has its own approved-provider requirements.
Keep every certificate
IDFPR can require certificates during a random audit or restoration process.
Approved subject areas for cosmetologists
- Advanced product chemistry and chemical interaction.
- Use of machines and implements.
- Sanitary procedures.
- Hazardous chemicals.
- Exposure minimization.
- Updated use of implements for applicable services.
- Advanced anatomy of skin, scalp, hair and/or nails.
- Human relations and communication skills.
- Management and marketing.
What Can Count Toward Illinois Cosmetology CE?
The current credit-hour rule includes several options that are rarely explained on short renewal pages.
| CE situation | Illinois credit rule | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| One normal CE hour | At least 50 minutes of actual class time | Pre-class and post-class preparation time does not automatically count. |
| College semester credit | 15 CE hours per semester hour | Course content still needs to qualify for the profession. |
| College quarter credit | 10 CE hours per quarter hour | Keep the official academic record. |
| Instructor / speaker / discussion leader | Credit for presentation time plus limited preparation credit | No more than 10 hours may be earned under the presenter provision during a renewal period. |
| Courses taken for another state’s CE requirement | Credit may be awarded | Keep documentation showing successful completion and qualifying subject matter. |
| Online individual study | Total required hours may be completed online | The course must include an examination and completion verification. |
| Course useful for more than one professional license | Qualifying training may be credited to multiple professions | The subject must appropriately apply to each profession and renewal period. |
Illinois Cosmetology CE Waiver: Who Can Request One?
A waiver is not an automatic exemption. It is a formal request made with the renewal when circumstances prevented completion of required CE.
| Waiver issue | Official requirement | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| How to request | Renewal application, renewal fee, statement explaining noncompliance and written waiver request | Submitting the request does not mean it has been approved. |
| Military service | Full-time armed-forces service during a substantial part of the prerenewal period may support good cause | IDFPR makes the determination. |
| Incapacitating illness | Document the illness as required by IDFPR | The illness must explain inability to complete CE. |
| Hardship | Examples include lack of local opportunities, substantial financial hardship or caring for an ill or disabled family member | A hardship claim still requires IDFPR review. |
| While request is pending | Follow every instruction from the Division | Pending renewal status is not final waiver approval. |
| How long it lasts | A separate decision is required for a later cycle | No permanent or perpetual CE waiver exists. |
| Restoration | Complete the applicable restoration CE | CE requirements cannot be waived when restoring a license from another status. |
How to Renew an Illinois Cosmetology License Online
Use this sequence when ordinary cosmetologist renewal opens for the September 30, 2027 cycle.
Search your license first
Confirm the license number, current status and September 30, 2027 expiration.
Check whether cosmetologist renewal is actually open
Use IDFPR’s live professions-in-renewal page rather than a teacher or school renewal shortcut.
Confirm which CE requirements apply to you
Separate normal later-renewal CE, first-renewal exemptions, legislative mandates and any one-time skin-growth requirement.
Complete approved education before certifying compliance
Save certificates and sponsor details in case IDFPR requests evidence.
Use the correct licensing system
CORE renewals are currently for licenses whose original new applications were created in CORE; other licenses continue through the existing process until transitioned.
Update your contact information
Keep the mailing address, email and phone information current before renewal.
Review the renewal questions
Check CE, personal information and any legal or disciplinary disclosure carefully before submission.
Verify the standard $50 fee
Make sure the transaction is for the correct cosmetologist credential before authorizing payment.
Submit and save proof
Keep the receipt, confirmation number and CE records.
Allow processing
The current cosmetology page advises allowing two to four business days for the license and status to update.
Verify the renewed record
Search the exact license number again and confirm the new expiration before treating renewal as complete.
IDFPR Login: CORE or Existing Renewal Portal?
| Task | Correct starting system | Important rule |
|---|---|---|
| Check a public license | License Lookup | No CORE or renewal login required. |
| Renew a license whose new application was created in CORE | CORE / ILogin | Use the account connected to the original CORE application. |
| Renew an older license not created in CORE | Existing IDFPR process | Continue using the legacy route until IDFPR transitions the transaction. |
| Reinstate or restore | IDFPR reactivation process | Do not assume ordinary renewal is available in CORE. |
| Print a license | Print My License | Verify active status first. |
Update Your Name, Address, Email and Phone Before Renewal
A renewal problem can begin with outdated contact information. IDFPR requires licensees to keep current personal information on file.
Keep these details current
- Legal name.
- Mailing address.
- Email address.
- Telephone number.
Possible supporting documents
- Marriage license.
- Court order.
- Divorce decree.
- Driver’s license where appropriate for the requested change.
- Other documentation specified on the current form.
Expired Illinois Cosmetology License: Reinstate or Restore?
The correct route depends mainly on how long the cosmetologist license has been expired or inactive.
| License condition | Starting route | Main requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Active and normal renewal is open | Ordinary renewal | Renewal application, applicable CE and current renewal fee. |
| Expired or inactive less than 5 years | Restoration / reinstatement application | Required fee plus 14 CE hours earned within the two years immediately before restoration. |
| Expired or inactive 5 years or more | Restoration | Recent lawful practice verification or the refresher/examination alternative, plus remaining restoration requirements. |
| Returning after active military service | Military restoration provision | Current rules provide a DD-214 route with the current renewal fee. |
| Disciplinary restriction | Order-specific petition/restoration | Follow the disciplinary order; ordinary payment does not remove restrictions. |
Five years or more: recent-practice route
- Show at least 24 months of lawful cosmetology employment during the previous five years.
- Obtain verification from at least three clients, coworkers or business owners.
- Provide certification from the licensing jurisdiction where that practice was authorized.
- Complete the Restoration Questionnaire.
- Complete 14 hours of recent CE.
- Pay the applicable restoration fee.
If you cannot prove the required recent practice
Illinois rules allow an alternative involving an approved 250-hour refresher course or passage of the cosmetology examination within the allowed restoration period. A person using that refresher/examination alternative does not also have to complete the 14-hour restoration CE, but the remaining restoration requirements still apply.

Illinois Cosmetology License Lookup FAQs
Is Illinois cosmetology license lookup free?
Yes. IDFPR Professional Regulation License Lookup is free and does not require CORE, ILogin or a paid verification service. IDFPR identifies the lookup as primary-source verification.
How do I search an Illinois cosmetology license by name?
Open IDFPR Professional Regulation License Lookup and start with the legal last name. Add the first name only when needed. If no result appears, try less information, a commonly used first name, a prior legal name or spacing variations such as McDaniel and Mc Daniel.
How quickly does Illinois License Lookup update?
Single License Lookup is updated daily. IDFPR says a newly issued license can take up to 24 hours to appear, while the current cosmetology page advises allowing two to four business days for a renewal to post and the license status to update.
What is the difference between Illinois License Lookup and Certification of Licensure?
License Lookup is free primary-source verification for routine status checks. Certification of Licensure is a separate sealed and signed IDFPR document used when formal certification is required; IDFPR currently charges $20 for most professions.
When is the next Illinois cosmetology license renewal date?
Ordinary Illinois cosmetologist licenses expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next scheduled ordinary cosmetologist expiration is September 30, 2027. The 2026 renewal cycle currently covers cosmetology teachers, clinic teachers and schools.
How much is Illinois cosmetology license renewal?
The current Illinois rule calculates professional license renewal at $25 per license year. An ordinary cosmetologist license has a two-year cycle, so the standard renewal fee is $50.
How many CE hours are required for Illinois cosmetology renewal?
A normal nonexempt later cosmetologist renewal requires 14 hours during the two-year prerenewal period. Current IDFPR guidance describes one hour of sexual-harassment-prevention training plus 13 hours in approved subject areas.
Can all 14 Illinois cosmetology CE hours be completed online?
Yes. Current Illinois rules allow the total required hours to be earned through qualifying online individual-study courses. An approved online individual-study course must include an examination and a means of verifying successful completion.
Does the first Illinois cosmetology renewal require the normal 14 CE hours?
No. Rule 1175.425 exempts the first renewal after original licensure from profession-specific CE. Separate legislative training requirements can still apply, including training identified by current IDFPR guidance, so first-renewal licensees should follow the live renewal prompts.
What happens if my Illinois cosmetology license expires?
When ordinary renewal is no longer available, use IDFPR’s reinstatement or restoration process. A license expired or inactive for less than five years generally requires the applicable fee and 14 hours of recent CE, while five years or more can require recent lawful-practice verification, a refresher course or an examination route.
