New York Cosmetology License Requirements
The standard New York school route requires age, approved training, health certification, awareness training and two state examinations.

The January 2026 application lists five qualification routes. Choosing the wrong one can cause unnecessary exams, rejected evidence or a returned application.

Health Certification: The 30-Day Rule
A physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner must complete the New York health certification. Poor timing is a common reason an otherwise complete application has to be repeated.

New York Temporary Cosmetology License
Eligible applicants can receive temporary authority while completing the examination process, but temporary licensing is limited and must be independently verified.

Second temporary license

Endorsement, Reciprocity and Out-of-State Applications
New York distinguishes between endorsement, reciprocity, equivalent outside education and five years of experience. The receiving state—New York—decides which route applies.
