Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent information website. It is not the Washington State Department of Licensing and does not issue, renew, reinstate or verify Washington licenses.

Do not work on an expired or canceled license. Washington DOL states that an expired or canceled cosmetology credential is treated as unlicensed status, and engaging in regulated work while unlicensed may lead to a fine.

Washington Cosmetology License Renewal Requirements

The current DOL practitioner-renewal instructions focus on the license record, payment and any legal-background information that applies to the licensee.

Your license number

Use the exact Washington credential you are renewing. Cosmetologist, Hair Designer, Barber, Manicurist, Esthetician and Master Esthetician are separate license types.

Renewal payment

The current individual renewal fee is $66. DOL does not accept licensing payments by telephone.

Legal-background questions

Be prepared to answer the renewal questions and provide supporting documents when the online or paper process requires them.

Update contact information first. DOL instructs licensees to update their contact information before renewal when necessary. That reduces problems with notices and the licensing record.

How to Renew a Washington Cosmetology License Online

Washington uses SecureAccess Washington, commonly called SAW, to access the Department of Licensing Professional and Business Licensing service.

Check your license and expiration date

Confirm the exact credential, license number, current status and expiration date before starting. Washington allows renewal up to 120 days early.

Update your contact information if needed

Correct outdated contact details before the renewal transaction so DOL has the right information associated with the license.

Sign in to SecureAccess Washington

Use your existing SAW account when you already have one. If you have never used SAW, create an account before accessing professional licensing services.

Add Professional and Business Licensing

If this is your first time using the DOL professional-license system through SAW, add the Professional and Business Licensing service to your account.

Enroll in multifactor authentication

DOL’s account-access instructions require MFA for the Professional and Business Licensing service.

Link your existing license

Connect the existing Washington professional credential to your account if it has not already been linked.

Complete the renewal questions

Review the license information and answer the legal-background and other renewal questions accurately. Upload supporting information if the system requires it.

Pay the applicable fee

For a current Cosmetologist license, the published renewal fee is $66. DOL currently accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express for online licensing payments and states that gift cards are not accepted.

Save proof and verify the renewed license

Keep the payment or transaction confirmation. After processing, check Washington’s public license record and confirm the updated expiration date and status.

Read DOL’s SAW account setup instructions.

How to Renew a Washington Cosmetology License by Mail

If you received a DOL renewal notice, follow the mailing instructions on that notice. If you did not receive one, DOL directs cosmetology practitioners to use its current Cosmetologist, Hair Designer, Barber, Manicurist, Esthetician, or Master Esthetician License, Renewal, Reinstatement, or Reciprocity Application.

Washington Cosmetology Renewal Fees in 2026

The current DOL fee page lists the same individual renewal and late-renewal amounts for Cosmetologist, Barber, Manicurist, Hair Design, Esthetician, Master Esthetics and Instructor licenses.

Credential or transaction Current fee What it means
Cosmetologist renewal $66 Two-year individual-license renewal when completed on time.
Late renewal $131 total The $66 renewal plus the current $65 late-renewal penalty.
License print fee $5 Separate charge when a printed license is purchased.
Hair Designer renewal $66 Separate individual credential; same current renewal fee.
Barber renewal $66 Separate individual credential; same current renewal fee.
Manicurist renewal $66 Separate individual credential; same current renewal fee.
Esthetician renewal $66 Separate individual credential; same current renewal fee.
Master Esthetician renewal $66 Separate individual credential; same current renewal fee.
Late-fee math: Washington’s fee rule lists a $66 two-year renewal fee plus a $65 late-renewal penalty. DOL therefore publishes the late-renewal total as $131.

Check the current DOL cosmetology fee page.

Does Washington Require Continuing Education for Cosmetology Renewal?

DOL’s current practitioner-renewal instructions do not list continuing education as a renewal requirement for the ordinary individual Cosmetologist, Hair Designer, Barber, Manicurist, Esthetician or Master Esthetician renewal process.

The current renewal requirements instead tell licensees to have their license number, renewal payment and any supporting documents needed for legal-background questions, and to update contact information when necessary.

This is different from states that require a set number of CE hours at every cosmetology renewal. Do not purchase a course solely because a third-party website says Washington requires CE unless the current DOL instructions for your exact credential say so.

What Happens If a Washington Cosmetology License Expires?

DOL considers a person unlicensed when the cosmetology credential expires or is canceled. The agency warns that performing regulated services while unlicensed can result in a fine.

License recently expired $131 late renewal

When the credential remains eligible for late renewal, use the DOL late-renewal process and pay the current $131 total fee.

Expired more than 1 year License canceled

DOL states that a cosmetology license expired for more than one year is canceled and the individual must reapply.

Do not rely on the missing renewal notice as an exception. DOL specifically states that failure to receive a renewal notice is not an acceptable reason for missing the deadline, and the late fee still applies.

Washington Cosmetology License Reinstatement

DOL also provides a reinstatement process for a lapsed or expired cosmetology license. The correct path depends on the status of the credential shown in DOL’s system, so check the record before assuming ordinary late renewal or reinstatement applies.

Request reinstatement

Submit a reinstatement request online through SAW or use the current combined renewal, reinstatement and reciprocity application by mail.

Wait for DOL instructions

DOL will review the request and provide examination scheduling information when the reinstatement path requires testing.

Pass the required exams

The current DOL reinstatement instructions state that the state-approved written and practical examinations must be passed. Washington’s cosmetology exam vendor changed to Prov on May 1, 2026.

Complete the licensing requirements

DOL states that the applicable cosmetology licensing fee is paid when the reinstatement licensing requirements are completed. Follow the amount and instructions DOL gives for your specific record.

If DOL shows the credential as canceled because it has been expired more than one year, follow the reapplication instructions rather than assuming a normal late renewal will restore it.

Didn’t Receive a Washington Renewal Notice?

A renewal notice is a courtesy; it does not change the licensee’s responsibility to renew on time. If your expiration date is approaching and no notice arrived, check the official record and begin through the online renewal route.

Renew online

Use SAW and Professional and Business Licensing. This avoids waiting for a replacement paper notice when the online credential is eligible for renewal.

Renew by mail without the notice

Use the current DOL Cosmetologist, Hair Designer, Barber, Manicurist, Esthetician, or Master Esthetician License, Renewal, Reinstatement, or Reciprocity Application.

Update Your Washington License Information Before Renewal

DOL tells cosmetology licensees to update contact information online before renewing when necessary. Keeping the licensing record current reduces the risk of missing future notices and avoids carrying old details into the renewed credential.

  • Review your legal name.
  • Check your mailing address.
  • Confirm the email address associated with the account.
  • Confirm your phone information when displayed or requested.
  • Make sure you have linked the correct professional license in SAW.

If a name change requires documentation, follow DOL’s current account instructions rather than changing only the display information on a third-party website.

Verify Your Washington License After Renewal

Keep the renewal confirmation, but verify the state record after processing. Washington’s public DOL lookup is the better source for confirming the current status and expiration date of the issued license.

Check the practitioner record

  • Legal name
  • License type
  • License number
  • Status
  • Updated expiration date

Do not confuse business and personal licenses

An individual cosmetology license is separate from a Salon/Shop, Mobile Unit or Personal Service location license. Search both records when your compliance question involves both the practitioner and the place of business.

For search fields, same-day database timing, missing records and business-license checks, use the dedicated Washington Cosmetology License Lookup guide.

Salon and Shop Renewal Is Different From Practitioner Renewal

A Cosmetologist license is an individual professional credential. A Salon/Shop, Personal Service or Mobile Unit is a separate business or location credential with a different renewal cycle, fee and documentation requirement.

License Renewal cycle Current renewal Late renewal
Individual Cosmetologist 2 years $66 $131
Salon/Shop Yearly or when liability insurance expires, whichever comes first $121 $181
Personal Service Yearly or when liability insurance expires, whichever comes first $121 $181
Mobile Unit Yearly or when liability insurance expires, whichever comes first $121 $181
Business renewal requires more than payment. DOL currently requires updated business liability insurance for Salon/Shop, Personal Service and Mobile Unit renewal.

Washington Cosmetology Renewal Troubleshooting

Problem Likely issue What to do
Cannot find the license in SAW The Professional and Business Licensing service or existing license may not be linked. Add the DOL service, complete MFA and link the existing professional license.
Renewal button is unavailable You may be outside the 120-day renewal window or the credential may have another status. Check the expiration and public status, then use DOL’s renewal or reinstatement instructions.
License already expired The ordinary on-time renewal window has passed. Do not practice. Check whether late renewal, reinstatement or reapplication applies.
No renewal notice arrived Your contact information may be outdated or the notice may not have arrived. Renew online or use the current paper form. The late fee is not waived because the notice was missed.
Online payment will not submit Browser, pop-up or payment-card issues may interfere with the DOL service. Review DOL’s SAW setup instructions and current accepted payment methods before retrying.
Public record still shows the old expiration The transaction may still be processing or the public database has not refreshed yet. Keep your confirmation and recheck the official DOL lookup. Contact the Cosmetology Program if the discrepancy persists.
License expired more than one year DOL considers the license canceled. Follow the current reapplication instructions rather than ordinary renewal.
