Verify a Virginia Cosmetology License Before You Rely on It
Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation provides a free public License Lookup for cosmetologists, temporary cosmetologists, cosmetology salons, schools and instructor credentials. Search the person and establishment separately, confirm the exact license type, then use DPOR’s disciplinary search when professional history matters.
Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent information website. It is not Virginia DPOR, the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology or another government licensing authority.
Virginia Cosmetology License Lookup: Fast Answer
Use Virginia DPOR’s official License Lookup. If you have the complete license number, search that first. Otherwise search by name, then use Advanced Search to narrow results by the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology and the correct credential type.
Do not stop at a matching name. Confirm the credential type, license number, displayed status, expiration date and location information when shown. If the person works in a salon, search the salon separately because an individual cosmetologist license and a cosmetology salon license are different records.
What a Virginia DPOR License Lookup Does—and Does Not—Prove
A license search answers a regulatory-status question. It should not be treated as a general background check, quality rating or guarantee about a particular service.
| Question | Can DPOR lookup help? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Is this person in Virginia’s licensing system? | Yes | Search the full license number or legal/professional name. |
| What credential does the person hold? | Yes | Confirm the exact license type rather than relying on the name alone. |
| Is the credential currently shown as active? | Yes | Review the displayed status and expiration date. |
| Is the salon separately licensed? | Yes | Search for the establishment record independently. |
| Has DPOR posted disciplinary action? | Yes, through a separate search | Use DPOR’s Disciplinary Action Search and match the correct license. |
| Is the professional insured? | No | Insurance is a separate question and is not established by a DPOR license result. |
| Is the salon sanitary today? | No | A current establishment license does not replace an on-site health or safety assessment. |
| Does licensure guarantee service quality? | No | Licensure shows regulatory status, not a guarantee of customer satisfaction. |

Virginia Cosmetology License Lookup: Exact Free Search Steps
Start with the strongest identifier and only add filters when they help. Too many filters can make a valid record harder to find.
Open Virginia DPOR License Lookup
Use the Commonwealth’s public licensing database instead of depending only on a social profile, paper-license photo, third-party directory or salon website.
Search the complete license number first when available
A full license number generally creates a cleaner match than a name-only search. After the record appears, still confirm the name and credential type.
Use the person’s name if you do not know the number
Start broad. If the search returns nothing, remove unnecessary location or license-type filters before deciding that the person has no Virginia record.
Use Advanced Search for Board and credential filters
Virginia’s Advanced Search provides fields for license number, name, location, Board and license type. Select the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology when unrelated professional records are appearing.
Open the record and compare the details
Check the license number, name, exact credential type, status, expiration date and location information when available. A familiar name alone is not enough.
Search the salon separately
If the service is performed in a salon, verify the establishment as well as the practitioner. The two licenses serve different regulatory purposes.
Check disciplinary actions when history matters
Employment, booth-rental, school-selection and consumer-safety decisions may justify a separate disciplinary search after you have correctly identified the licensee.
Check the database update time for recent transactions
The official search page displays when its license information was last updated. This can help explain why a very recent renewal, issuance or account change is not yet visible.
Which DPOR Search Field Should You Use?
License Number
Use it first when the practitioner, salon or school has provided a Virginia license number. Compare the returned name and credential type before relying on the result.
Name
Useful when you do not have the license number. Keep the first search simple and add filters only when multiple similar records appear.
Location
Use an address, city or ZIP to separate similar results. Do not treat an old or different location as proof that the license belongs to another person without checking other identifiers.
Board
Select the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology to remove records controlled by unrelated Virginia professional boards.
License Type
Use this when you know whether you are checking a cosmetologist, temporary cosmetologist, cosmetology salon, school or instructor credential.
Entering Every Field
A wrong old address, ZIP or license type can hide a valid record. Remove optional fields and rebuild the search gradually when no result appears.
Virginia Cosmetology License Type Codes
DPOR uses different regulant types for practitioners, facilities, schools and teaching credentials. Match the code to the thing you are actually trying to verify.
| DPOR credential | Type code | What it represents | Typical verification use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary Cosmetologist | 1200 | Time-limited initial-license authority | Check expiration and required direct supervision. |
| Cosmetologist | 1201 | Individual cosmetology practitioner | Verify the person performing regulated cosmetology services. |
| Cosmetology Salon | 1202 | Licensed cosmetology establishment | Verify the business/location separately from individual workers. |
| Cosmetology School | 1205 | Board-regulated cosmetology school | Confirm the school record before relying on training claims. |
| Barbers and Cosmetology Instructor Certificate | 1226 | Instructor credential | Verify regulated teaching authority. |
| Temporary Barbers and Cosmetology Student Instructor License | 1227 | Temporary student-instructor credential | Check current temporary teaching authority and expiration. |
How to Read a Virginia License Result
Interpret status together with the credential type, expiration date and any public disciplinary information. Do not treat a single field as the whole regulatory picture.
| Result signal | What it means for your check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Current / Active | The record is displayed as currently effective. | Confirm the profession, expiration date and identity before relying on it. |
| Temporary | The person may have short-term supervised authority. | Check expiration and the direct-supervision requirement. |
| Expired | The normal license period has ended. | Do not treat Virginia’s late-renewal window as permission to keep practicing. |
| Suspended | Practice authority has been restricted by regulatory action. | Review the relevant DPOR order or contact the Board when clarification is needed. |
| Revoked | The credential has been withdrawn. | Do not rely on an older paper or digital license as evidence of current authority. |
| No result | The search may be too narrow, the name may differ, the profession may be wrong or the transaction may be recent. | Work through the troubleshooting steps below before reaching a conclusion. |
No Virginia Cosmetology License Found? Try This Before You Assume It Is Unlicensed
1. Remove extra filters
Search the name or complete license number without old address, ZIP or credential filters that may be excluding the correct record.
2. Check the exact credential
A person may appear under another Board-regulated license type. Do not assume a cosmetology search will automatically return nail, waxing, esthetics or barber credentials.
3. Ask for the license number
When two people share a similar name or a name has changed, a complete Virginia license number is usually the clearest identifier.
4. Check the database timestamp
A recent renewal, issuance or change may not yet be reflected if processing or technical updates are still pending.
5. Search the salon separately
Finding a business does not prove that an individual worker is licensed, and finding an individual does not prove that the salon record is current.
6. Contact DPOR when records conflict
If the online result conflicts with an official DPOR letter or another agency record, do not decide which one controls on your own. Ask DPOR to reconcile the discrepancy.
Verify the Virginia Cosmetology Salon Separately
A practitioner license and a salon license are separate credentials. If you are checking a workplace, booth-rental arrangement or business before receiving services, verify both when applicable.
Cosmetologist — Type 1201
This is the professional credential for an individual cosmetologist. Match the person, status and expiration date.
Cosmetology Salon — Type 1202
This is the establishment license. Search it independently and compare the business name and location information shown in the official record.
Virginia Temporary Cosmetologist License: What Type 1200 Means
Virginia regulations allow a temporary practitioner license in qualifying initial-license situations. It is not the same as an ordinary two-year cosmetologist license.
90 Days
The temporary license remains in force for 90 days. The regulation states that no subsequent temporary license is issued under this provision.
Direct Supervision Required
The temporary license is for work under direct supervision of a currently licensed individual in the applicable scope of practice.
No Temporary-License Fee
The current regulation states that there is no fee for this temporary license.
How to Check Virginia Cosmetology Disciplinary Actions
A current license does not automatically mean there has never been regulatory discipline. DPOR maintains a separate disciplinary-action search.
Identify the correct license first
Use License Lookup to obtain the correct name, license number and credential type before connecting disciplinary information to a person or business.
Open DPOR Disciplinary Action Search
Search by the strongest available identifier and compare the returned credential information carefully.
Use Records Management for older actions
DPOR states that its online disciplinary search covers actions occurring on or after April 1, 2002. For actions occurring on or before March 31, 2002, use the agency’s records route.
Online disciplinary search
Use for publicly posted disciplinary actions from April 1, 2002 forward.

Open DPOR records informationFree License Lookup vs Certification of Licensure
The public lookup is appropriate when you simply need to view the online status of a Virginia license. Certified proof is a different service used when another agency, employer, licensing board or formal process specifically requires certification.
DPOR License Lookup
Free public search for the online regulatory record. Use this first when you only need current public verification.
Certification of Licensure
DPOR’s MyVirginia option currently lists a $40 fee for up to two certification copies. Use certification only when the receiving party actually requires formal proof.
Expired Virginia Cosmetology License: Lookup Status Is Only the Starting Point
Virginia cosmetology licenses and certificates issued under the applicable chapter expire two years from the last day of the month in which they were issued. A person should use the expiration date shown on the actual DPOR record rather than assuming that every cosmetologist has the same renewal month.
If a license has not been renewed within 30 days after expiration, the regulations move the credential into the reinstatement process. If the applicable license is not reinstated within two years after expiration, the normal reinstatement route is no longer available and the former licensee generally must qualify under current new-applicant requirements.
Current Virginia Cosmetology Fee Context
This lookup page is not a full fee guide, but fees matter when a record shows expired or when you are deciding whether free lookup is enough. The current Virginia regulations list these base amounts for cosmetology-related individual and facility transactions.
| Transaction | Base amount | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Individual application | $120 | Relevant if a former credential can no longer be reinstated and a new application is required. |
| Cosmetologist renewal | $120 | Base regulatory renewal fee before applicable technology charges. |
| Individual reinstatement | $240 | Current regulation lists this as the renewal fee plus reinstatement fee. |
| Facility renewal | $220 | Relevant when verifying or restoring a cosmetology salon license. |
| Facility reinstatement | $440 | Current regulation lists this for facility reinstatement. |
For the full licensing path, education, exams, endorsement and current fee context, see our Virginia cosmetology license guide.
Checking a Virginia Cosmetology School? Verify More Than Its Name
DPOR’s license lookup can confirm a cosmetology-school record, but students also need to understand which approved curriculum applies to their enrollment period.
Search Cosmetology School — Type 1205
Verify the school and location through DPOR before relying only on advertising, social-media pages or general education directories.
Check the curriculum version
Virginia’s current standard cosmetology school curriculum is based on at least 1,000 hours, but transition rules still matter for some students who enrolled under an earlier approved program.
Virginia License Lookup Looks Wrong or Outdated: What Should You Do?
Do not submit duplicate transactions simply because a recently completed renewal, address change or other update is not yet reflected in the public search.
| Problem | Best first action | Where to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Name appears wrong | Confirm whether the official record still requires a name-change transaction. | Board Licensing Section |
| Address is outdated | Review DPOR’s available address-change options. | Online Services or Board staff |
| Renewal paid but status has not changed | Check the lookup update timestamp and keep the payment confirmation. | Board Licensing Section |
| Online Services error | Save the exact message and relevant transaction information. | DPOR technical support |
| Public lookup conflicts with an official agency communication | Do not decide which record is controlling yourself. | Ask DPOR to reconcile the discrepancy |
When contacting DPOR about an individual credential, have the license number, the name exactly as it appears on the license, the credential type and a clear description of the discrepancy ready when possible.

Protect Yourself From Fake Virginia DPOR Messages
DPOR currently warns that scam emails have circulated that falsely appear to come from the agency. These messages may request personal information or attempt to send recipients to unsafe links.
A legitimate-looking logo or reference to an actual license does not by itself prove that an email came from DPOR.

Virginia Cosmetology License Lookup FAQs
Is the Virginia cosmetology license lookup free?
Yes. Virginia DPOR provides a free public License Lookup for professional and business credentials. You do not need to buy a private search service simply to view the public online license record.
What is the fastest way to verify a Virginia cosmetologist?
Search the complete Virginia license number when you have it. Otherwise search by name and use Advanced Search to select the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology and the correct credential type. Then confirm the status and expiration date.
What is the Virginia cosmetologist license type number?
DPOR lists Cosmetologist as type 1201. Temporary Cosmetologist is 1200, Cosmetology Salon is 1202 and Cosmetology School is 1205.
Why does DPOR show no result for a cosmetologist?
The search may contain too many filters, the spelling may differ, the person may hold a different Board credential or a recent licensing transaction may not yet be reflected. Remove optional filters, try the full license number and check the update timestamp on the official database.
Should I verify the salon as well as the cosmetologist?
Yes when the establishment’s licensing status matters. A cosmetologist’s individual license and a cosmetology salon license are separate records. One does not automatically prove the other is current.
How do I check disciplinary action against a Virginia cosmetologist?
Use DPOR’s separate Disciplinary Action Search after identifying the correct license. The online disciplinary search covers actions occurring on or after April 1, 2002. For actions occurring on or before March 31, 2002, contact DPOR Records Management.
How long does a Virginia temporary cosmetologist license last?
The current regulation provides a 90-day temporary license for eligible initial applicants. It requires direct supervision, carries no temporary-license fee and is not followed by another temporary license under that provision.
Can a Virginia cosmetologist keep working during the 30-day renewal period?
No. DPOR states that a person cannot continue practicing after the license has expired. The 30-day period relates to when the reinstatement process applies; it does not extend the license’s practice authority.
How much does formal Virginia license certification cost online?
DPOR currently lists MyVirginia online Certification of Licensure at $40 for up to two copies. Use the free public License Lookup instead when formal certified documentation is not required.
Who do I call about a Virginia cosmetology license?
The Board for Barbers and Cosmetology Licensing Section publishes 804-367-8509 for licensing questions. DPOR currently limits licensing call-center availability on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to noon–2:00 p.m.
