What can count toward the two elective hours?
For the standard four-hour route, TDLR allows the additional two hours to cover approved barbering/cosmetology topics, sanitation, Texas barbering and cosmetology law and rules, mental-health awareness, or another subject allowed under the applicable rule.
Keep your completion certificate
The provider must issue a completion certificate no later than 15 days after the end of the course. TDLR instructs barbering and cosmetology licensees to retain the certificate for two years after completion because the Department may request the record during an inspection or investigation.

2026 TDLR Lawful-Presence Documentation During Renewal
Beginning in 2026, TDLR may require certain applicants and renewing licensees to submit documentation establishing lawful presence in the United States. The documentation process began January 26, 2026, and TDLR’s related rule took effect May 1, 2026.
If requested renewal documents are not received before your existing expiration date, the license can still expire. Once acceptable documentation is supplied, an expired credential may then be subject to the applicable late-renewal process.
Child-Support Non-Renewable Status Can Block Renewal
