Verify More Than a Name: Check the NJ License, Shop, Status and Regulatory Record
New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs provides a real-time license verification system for individual professionals and licensed beauty businesses. A proper verification means matching the correct credential, current status, license number and expiration—not simply finding a similar name.
This page focuses on verification decisions: what a state record proves, what it does not prove, how salon owners document practitioner checks, when to review disciplinary actions, and when ordinary online verification is not the same as formal certification.
NJ Cosmetology License Verification: Fast Answer
Use the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System for the current state record. Choose Person Search for an individual cosmetologist, barber, manicurist, skin care specialist or other practitioner. Choose Business Search for regulated shops such as cosmetology and hairstyling shops, barber shops, manicuring shops and skin care specialty shops.
New Jersey describes this as a real-time verification system. For an individual search, you can use profession, license type, first or middle name, last name, license number and city. Business Search uses profession, license type, business name, license number and city. Partial words are allowed, but any search field you use must contain at least two characters.
Person Search and Business Search Are Different NJ Verification Records
New Jersey separates individual professional credentials from regulated business credentials. Using the wrong search route is one of the easiest ways to miss a valid state record.
Use Person Search
Use Person Search when checking the professional who will perform the service.
- Cosmetologist-Hairstylist
- Barber
- Beautician
- Manicurist
- Skin Care Specialist
- Other applicable Board-issued individual credentials
Use Business Search
Use Business Search when the credential is issued to the shop or regulated facility rather than to one person.
- Cosmetology and hairstyling shop
- Barber shop
- Manicuring shop
- Skin care specialty shop
- Other applicable business license records
What an NJ Cosmetology License Verification Actually Tells You
Verification is most useful when you match several details rather than relying on a single favorable-looking status label. A similar name by itself is not enough.
| Record detail | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Match the legal professional or business name. | Several people or businesses can have similar names. |
| Credential type | Confirm the exact profession or shop category. | A credential in one category does not automatically authorize every beauty service. |
| License number | Compare the number with employment, salon or professional records. | A license number is usually a stronger match than name alone. |
| Status | Read the exact current state label. | Do not translate unfamiliar status wording into your own legal conclusion. |
| Expiration | Check the date shown for the credential. | A wall license or old screenshot can be out of date. |
| City or location | Use available location details as a secondary match. | This helps distinguish records with similar names. |
How to Verify an NJ Cosmetology License Step by Step
Open the Official New Jersey Verification System
Start with the Division of Consumer Affairs system rather than an unofficial directory, social profile or photograph of a paper credential.
Choose Person Search or Business Search
Search an individual practitioner as a person. Search a covered salon, barber shop, manicuring shop or skin care specialty shop as a business.
Select the Profession and License Type
Choosing the relevant profession or license type can reduce unrelated records and helps you verify that the credential matches the service involved.
Use the License Number When Available
A license number can help identify the correct record. Otherwise, use the legal name or business name and add city only when it helps distinguish matches.
Try Partial Text if the Exact Search Fails
New Jersey says names and city do not need to be spelled in full. Any search option you use must contain at least two characters.
Compare the State Record Carefully
Match the name, credential, license number, current status, expiration and available location information before relying on the result.
Check the Shop Separately When Relevant
A practitioner credential and a shop license are separate records. Verify both when the person is providing regulated services from a licensed establishment.
Use Board Records for Higher-Stakes Questions
Review disciplinary actions separately when enforcement history matters, and contact the Board when the status or license category is unclear.
For a search-field-by-search-field walkthrough, use the related NJ Cosmetology License Lookup guide.
Do Not Treat “I Found a Record” as the End of Verification
Confirm the Person
Compare the legal name and license number. Do not assume that a similar first and last name is automatically the correct professional.
Confirm the Credential
New Jersey uses distinct license categories. Verify the credential that actually applies to the service or employment role involved.
Confirm Status and Expiration
Read what the live state record says today. Do not substitute an old wall license, renewal receipt or application confirmation for the current public record.
Verify the Practitioner and Salon as Two Separate Credentials
An individual professional license does not automatically prove that the establishment is properly licensed, and a licensed shop does not prove that every person performing services there holds the required credential.
Professional Record
- Legal name
- Professional credential
- License number
- Current status
- Expiration
Shop Record
- Licensed business name
- Shop category
- Shop license number
- Current status
- Location match
NJ Salon Owners Have Additional Practitioner-Verification Duties
New Jersey Administrative Code 13:28-4.4 requires more than a casual online check. The holder of the shop license and the shop’s designated experienced practicing licensee have specific verification and recordkeeping responsibilities for practitioners working in the shop.
Verify the License or Permit
Confirm that each covered practitioner holds a valid license or permit before relying on the person as a licensed practitioner in the shop.
Review Additional Identification
The rule requires two additional forms of identification, with at least one bearing the practitioner’s photograph.
Document the Verification
Maintain the verification information required by the rule, including the date of the check and identifying information associated with the practitioner.
Keep the Records for at Least Two Years
Required verification documentation must be kept securely and confidentially on the licensed premises for at least two years from the date of the verification record.
License Status and Disciplinary History Are Separate Checks
The public verification system answers questions about the current license record. The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling also publishes a separate disciplinary-actions resource.
Use It to Check Current Credential Data
- Identity
- Credential type
- License number
- Status
- Expiration
Use It to Review Published Enforcement Records
A current-looking license result should not be treated as proof that no disciplinary action has ever occurred. Review the Board’s published actions separately when that history is relevant to your decision.
Public Verification Is Not the Same as Formal License Certification
New Jersey explicitly describes the public database as a verification system. A different process may apply when another licensing authority asks for an official certification of a New Jersey license.
The Board’s Applications and Forms page provides a Request Form for Certification for New Jersey Licensees. The Board separately lists COSCertVerification@dca.lps.state.nj.us for out-of-state certification matters.
What to Do if the NJ License Search Shows No Result
A failed search does not automatically prove that someone is unlicensed. First rule out search-type, spelling and credential-selection problems.
| Problem | Possible explanation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No individual result | You may have used the wrong legal name, credential or too many filters. | Try the license number or a partial legal name with fewer optional fields. |
| No salon result | You may be searching the public-facing brand rather than the licensed business name. | Switch to Business Search and verify the legal business name. |
| Too many results | The name is common. | Add credential type, license number or city. |
| New applicant not visible | An application or approval step may still be pending. | Do not treat an application as an issued license. Check the application process or contact the Board. |
| Renewed record has not updated | Renewal processing may not yet be reflected as expected. | Keep the confirmation, recheck the official record and contact the Board if the discrepancy continues. |
| Status is unclear | The state label may have a specific regulatory meaning. | Contact the Board instead of making your own interpretation. |
September 2026 Verification: Check the Expiration Date Carefully
For the current Cosmetologist-Hairstylist renewal cycle, New Jersey lists a September 30, 2026 expiration date and a $90 renewal fee. Renewal after the expiration date adds a $30 late fee.
The state currently lists October 31, 2026 as the last day for online renewal. After that date, the licensee must contact the licensing Board about reinstatement procedures and associated fees.
Need Many NJ License Records? Use the State Licensee List
The Division makes licensee lists available online at no charge for users who need more than a one-record verification. The Board states that these lists can include license numbers, names, licensee addresses, counties, certification dates and expiration dates.
The published list does not include telephone numbers, email addresses, gender or mailing labels.

Is NJ cosmetology license verification free?
New Jersey provides a public license verification system for professional and business records. Ordinary public verification does not require buying a private background or license-search service.
Should I use Person Search or Business Search?
Use Person Search for an individual practitioner. Use Business Search for covered establishments such as cosmetology and hairstyling shops, barber shops, manicuring shops and skin care specialty shops.
Can I search an NJ license using only part of the name?
Yes. The state says names and city do not need to be entered in full. Any search field you use must contain at least two characters.
Does an active-looking license prove there has never been discipline?
No. Current license verification and published disciplinary actions are separate state resources. Check the Board’s disciplinary-actions page when enforcement history matters.
Does a licensed salon prove that every worker is licensed?
No. The shop license and each practitioner’s individual credential are separate records. Verify the practitioner and the shop independently when both apply.
How long must an NJ salon keep practitioner-verification records?
N.J.A.C. 13:28-4.4 requires applicable practitioner-verification documentation to be retained for at least two years from the date of each verification record.
What is the NJ cosmetology license expiration date in 2026?
The current state renewal page lists September 30, 2026 for Cosmetologist-Hairstylist licenses. The renewal fee is $90, with a $30 late fee after expiration.
What if I cannot find a license?
First confirm that you selected Person or Business Search correctly, check the legal name and credential, reduce optional filters, try a partial spelling and use the license number when available. Contact the Board if an important record remains unresolved.
Is public license verification the same as formal certification?
No. Public verification shows the state’s license record. If another licensing authority requires formal certification, use the New Jersey Board’s certification process and current certification request form.
What is the NJ State Board of Cosmetology phone number?
The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling lists 973-504-6400 as its main telephone number.
