Use the complete license number first

Try the current legal or professional name. If the result is empty, simplify the spelling and remove city or ZIP filters before concluding that no record exists.

Check disciplinary history when the decision is important

Note the database update timestamp
The DPOR search page displays when its license information was last updated. If you are checking a renewal or new issuance completed very recently, this timestamp helps explain a temporary mismatch.

Virginia’s Advanced Search supports license number, name, location, Board and license type. Each field solves a different problem.
License Number
Best when a practitioner, salon or school has provided its Virginia number. Always compare the returned name and license category too.
Name
Best when you know the professional or business name but not the credential number. Start with minimal additional filters.
Location
Useful for separating similar names. Do not rely on location alone because a licensee may have moved or the record may use a different mailing address.
Board
Select Board for Barbers and Cosmetology to remove unrelated Virginia professional boards.
License Type
Useful when the same name appears as a cosmetologist, salon, school or instructor—or when you know exactly which authority you need to verify.
Using Every Field
Entering a name, old address, ZIP and wrong license type at the same time can hide a valid result. Remove optional filters and rebuild the search gradually.

Two People Have the Same Name: How to Find the Right Virginia Record

Start again with only the license number or name.
Check the spelling
Remove middle initials, punctuation or optional words from a business name. Ask the licensee how the name appears on the Virginia credential.

A salon name will not substitute for the personal cosmetologist credential. Search both records independently.

Virginia Requires You to Verify the Salon Separately
The practitioner and the establishment are separate regulatory records. Checking only one leaves an important gap.
Individual Cosmetologist

- Temporary or disciplinary restrictions are understood.
Cosmetology Salon
- Business identity matches the salon you are visiting.

- The establishment has not been confused with a separate nail, waxing or esthetics facility license.
- Each separate facility/location is checked when relevant.
Temporary Virginia Cosmetologist License: Do Not Mistake It for a Full License
Virginia’s temporary cosmetologist credential has specific limits that matter when it appears in search results.
Virginia’s regulation states that there is no fee for this temporary license.
The temporary practitioner license remains in force for 90 days.
The holder must work under direct supervision of an appropriately licensed individual.
The regulation says no subsequent temporary practitioner license will be issued.
A separate student instructor temporary license can last 12 months and has its own supervision and school-association rules. Do not confuse type 1227 with a normal cosmetologist temporary license.

What if the Virginia Cosmetology License Is Expired?
The public lookup is often where a licensee discovers a missed expiration. Virginia’s first 30 days affect the fee—not the right to keep practicing.
Use the ordinary renewal transaction and verify the new expiration afterward.
Virginia permits renewal before the reinstatement fee applies, but the expired credential does not authorize work.
A reinstatement fee applies. After two years, reinstatement is no longer available.
Two-year cutoff
If an individual or business fails to renew within two years following expiration, Virginia no longer allows ordinary reinstatement. The former licensee must use the applicable new-applicant route and meet current entry requirements.
No renewal notice?
Virginia regulations state that failure to receive the renewal notice does not remove the licensee’s responsibility to renew.
