Know Whether to Renew, Reinstate or Prepare for 2027
Missouri cosmetology licenses use an odd-year September 30 renewal cycle, so there is no ordinary statewide cosmetology renewal deadline in 2026. The next standard expiration is September 30, 2027.
This independent guide explains MOPRO registration, the current $60 operator fee, instructor requirements, expired and inactive licenses, technical problems, documents and final status checks. It is not the Missouri Board or MOPRO.
Missouri Cosmetology Renewal: Fast 2026 Answer
Prepare, do not force a renewal
Claim the correct MOPRO account, update your information and wait until the Board places your credential into the renewal period.
Use reinstatement now
During 2026, a September 30, 2025 expiration is still inside the ordinary two-year reinstatement period. Do not practice until authority is restored.
Reactivate before working
An inactive license does not authorize Missouri cosmetology practice. Reactivation uses a different process from routine renewal.

Missouri Cosmetology Renewal Deadline: 2026 Is Not the Normal Renewal Year
Missouri cosmetology licenses renew biennially and expire on September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next standard deadline after September 30, 2025 is September 30, 2027.
Preparation year
No regular Sept. 30, 2026 expiryFix your MOPRO access, email, license linkage, legal name and record problems before the 2027 renewal period becomes urgent.
2027 renewal
September 30, 2027Renew while your credential is eligible in MOPRO. Do not assume a reminder email extends the statutory expiration date.
Verify Your Missouri License Before You Renew or Pay
A wall certificate, old screenshot or payment receipt can be outdated. Missouri’s MOPRO public search and downloadable active-license listings are updated nightly.
Search the legal name or license number
Use the official public MOPRO license search and identify the exact professional record.
Confirm the credential class
Make sure you are looking at Class CA, CH, E, MO, instructor, crossover or establishment as applicable.
Read the status and expiration together
An active 2027 record uses a different route from an expired 2025 or inactive credential.
Search business licenses separately
A cosmetologist license and a salon or rental-station license are different records.
How to Claim an Existing Missouri Cosmetology License in MOPRO
The most important 2026 preparation task is connecting your existing license to the correct MOPRO account before the 2027 renewal window opens.
Open MOPRO and choose Register
Existing license holders should register first rather than trying to create a new initial-license application.
Select “Individual License”
Choose the option stating that you want to see, edit or renew an existing Missouri license.
Match your existing state record
Enter your Social Security number when applicable. If you do not have an SSN, MOPRO’s FAQ says you may be asked for date of birth and the email used for the license.
Obtain and verify the security code
The code is sent using the email associated with the licensing record.
Create security questions and finish registration
After registration, use the Welcome email to establish or change your password as instructed.
Missouri Cosmetology License Renewal Online: Exact MOPRO Workflow
Once Missouri places your credential into an active renewal period, MOPRO’s current FAQ provides a specific renewal path.
Log in to the correct account
Use the account holding the individual or business credential you need to renew.
Switch accounts if necessary
Use “Switch Accounts” when the license is held under a different individual or business account.
Select “RENEW A LICENSE”
MOPRO displays licenses currently eligible in the renewal period. If the expected license is missing, Board staff should be contacted.
Open the Eye icon
View the license details and select “Renewal Application” for the online process.
Review every field and disclosure
Confirm the correct license, legal information, addresses and required responses before signing.
Pay the displayed amount
Verify the license type and transaction before paying because Board fees are nonrefundable.
Download your receipt
In MOPRO, open “My Payments,” select the Eye icon and choose “Download Receipt.”
Verify the renewed status
After processing and the nightly public-data update, confirm the new status and expiration in the official search.
Current Missouri Cosmetology Renewal and Reinstatement Fees
Current fees below come from 20 CSR 2085-3.010, effective November 30, 2024. This corrects older Missouri pages still showing $50 operator renewal.
| License or action | Current Board fee | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology operator renewal | $60 | Ordinary Class CA, CH, E or MO operator renewal. |
| Cosmetology operator reinstatement | $90 | Includes the applicable late fee for the ordinary reinstatement route. |
| Inactive operator status | $30 | An inactive credential does not authorize practice. |
| Instructor renewal record | $60 | Instructor renewal fee is submitted in addition to the regular operator renewal fee. |
| Instructor reinstatement | $90 | Instructor seminar proof may also be required. |
| Cosmetology establishment renewal | $75 | Personal-license renewal does not renew the salon or rental station. |
| Cosmetology establishment reinstatement | $105 | Separate business reinstatement transaction. |
| Crossover operator renewal | $120 | Do not use the standard $60 operator amount for crossover credentials. |
| Crossover instructor renewal | $120 | Separate crossover fee category. |
| Crossover establishment renewal | $150 | Different from ordinary cosmetology establishment renewal. |
| Duplicate license | $10 | Current miscellaneous fee. |
Missouri Cosmetology Instructor Renewal: 8-Hour Seminar Rule
Ordinary cosmetology operators do not have the same continuing-education rule as instructors. The special Missouri instructor requirement is eight hours at a Board-approved seminar during the two years immediately preceding renewal.
No general 8-hour operator CE rule
The ordinary cosmetologist renewal rule requires timely application and fee. The specific eight-hour seminar rule belongs to cosmetology instructors.
8 approved seminar hours
Submit proof showing the seminar date and place. The training must fall within the two years immediately before the renewal date.
- Use a seminar approved for Missouri instructor renewal.
- Approved virtual training may qualify when it is contemporaneously interactive visually and verbally.
- Keep the attendance certificate showing the date and place.
- Report the school name and location where currently employed as an instructor, or state that you are not currently employed as an instructor.
- An inactive instructor returning to teaching must meet the applicable seminar requirement before reactivation.
Missouri Cosmetology License Expired September 30, 2025
A 2025-expired cosmetology license should not wait for the next ordinary renewal cycle. Missouri permits restoration within two years of expiration without examination when the required reinstatement application and fees are completed.
Verify the exact expiration
Confirm that the record actually expired September 30, 2025 and is not merely inactive or connected to the wrong account.
Choose reinstatement, not ordinary renewal
Use the current Operator/Instructor Reinstatement route available through COSBAR/MOPRO.
Prepare lawful-presence proof
MOPRO’s current FAQ says reinstatements from lapsed, inactive or expired status after January 14, 2025 require proof of lawful presence.
Pay the current reinstatement amount
For an ordinary cosmetology operator, the current rule amount is $90.
Instructor? Add seminar proof
An instructor reinstatement has its own seminar requirement in addition to payment.
Verify active authority before working
Keep the confirmation, then check the public record after processing.
License Expired More Than Two Years: Reinstatement by Examination
Missouri’s current cosmetology rule uses a different route after a license has been expired more than two years.
Ordinary reinstatement is no longer enough
The current rule provides for reinstatement by examination rather than simply paying the ordinary renewal and late fee.
Practical portion specified
20 CSR 2085-7.050 states that the reinstatement examination consists of the practical portion of the licensure examination.
Rule-based preparation
- Use the current Reinstatement by Examination application.
- Provide your former Missouri license number.
- Prepare the required renewal and late fee amounts specified by current instructions.
- The rule calls for two approximately 2×2 U.S. passport photographs taken within the previous five years.
- Follow the current testing administrator and Board scheduling instructions rather than an old exam-vendor page.
- Complete any current lawful-presence documentation required by MOPRO or the Board.
Inactive Missouri Cosmetology License: Reactivate Before Practice
Inactive is different from expired. A cosmetologist may hold an inactive record, but the credential does not authorize practice in Missouri.
Confirm the status says inactive
Do not pay an ordinary reinstatement fee merely because the credential is not active.
Use the reactivation application
COSBAR lists a “Reactivate Inactive License Application” among its current forms.
Submit the current renewal fee
Missouri’s cosmetologist rule requires the reactivation application along with the current renewal fee.
Prepare lawful-presence proof
MOPRO’s FAQ includes inactive-status reinstatements/reactivations among transactions requiring lawful-presence documentation after January 14, 2025.
Instructor? Complete the seminar rule
An inactive instructor must complete the applicable Board-approved seminar before returning to teaching.
Documents to Prepare for Renewal, Reinstatement or Reactivation
Routine renewal preparation
- Exact license number and credential class.
- Current email tied to MOPRO.
- Current mailing and residence addresses.
- Legal-name documentation if the name changed.
- Instructor seminar certificate when applicable.
- Payment method and final MOPRO checkout review.
Reinstatement / reactivation additions
- Proof of lawful presence required by the current MOPRO process.
- Expired or inactive license information.
- Any required disciplinary or background disclosures.
- Instructor CE proof when applicable.
- Current form-specific photographs if required.
Examples of lawful-presence proof listed by MOPRO
| Situation | Examples listed in current MOPRO FAQ |
|---|---|
| U.S. citizen | REAL ID driver’s license, qualifying birth certificate, or signed U.S. passport, including an expired passport as described by the FAQ. |
| Foreign citizen / lawful presence | Documents can include F-1, H-1B, Permanent Resident Card, qualifying extension documentation or visa entry evidence, depending on status. |
Will Missouri Require a 2×2 Photo for 2027 Renewal?
The 2025 Missouri operator renewal cycle required a 2×2 passport-style photo upload. That is useful history, but it should not be presented as a confirmed 2027 requirement until the Board publishes the new renewal notice.
Operator photo upload
Missouri’s 2025 notice required operator-license renewals to upload a 2×2 passport-style photograph.
Wait for current instructions
Do not buy, resize or submit a photograph solely because the prior cycle required one. Follow the 2027 MOPRO screen and Board notice.
How to Change Your Name, Email or Address in MOPRO
Account details and license details are not always changed from the same screen. The current MOPRO FAQ gives separate routes.
| What changed? | Current MOPRO route | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Profile icon → My Profile → edit email → Save → verify new email. | Complete verification so future security messages reach the correct inbox. |
| Name on license | My Licenses → select license → Eye icon → Amend → Change of Name. | Upload or provide required supporting documentation. |
| Mailing / residence address on license | My Licenses → Eye icon → Amend → Change of Address. | Select the address type that needs correction. |
| Name on MOPRO account | Contact the licensing board. | Do not create a second account under the new name. |
| Account-level address problem | Contact the licensing board when the portal cannot correct the account-level record. | Explain which license and which address field is incorrect. |
MOPRO Renewal Problems: Fix the Exact Error
| Problem | What to check | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| License missing from renewal list | The license may not be in its renewal period, may be under another account, or may require reinstatement/reactivation. | Verify status and contact Board staff if an eligible license is missing. |
| Cannot register existing license | Email, SSN/date of birth or identifying data may not match the Board record. | Use MOPRO tech support rather than creating another account. |
| Portal suddenly logged me out | MOPRO sessions end after 15 minutes of inactivity. | Log back in and save work as you proceed. |
| Portal behaves strangely in another tab/device | MOPRO permits only one active browser session at a time. | Close extra sessions and use one supported browser. |
| Buttons or pages do not load | Browser cache, cookies or pop-up blocking may interfere. | Use updated Chrome or Firefox on desktop/laptop, clear cache/cookies and allow necessary pop-ups. |
| Payment page failed | Look under My Applications → Payment Pending. | MOPRO says failed payments can be reinitiated after 24 hours. |
| I cannot find my receipt | My Payments section. | Open the Eye icon and select Download Receipt. |
| I need my license PDF | My Licenses section. | Open the Eye icon and choose Download a Copy of My License. |
Cannot Renew Online? Use the Paper Route Correctly
MOPRO’s current FAQ says an eligible renewal record can provide both an online “Renewal Application” option and a “Download Renewal Form” option.
Wait until the correct renewal cycle is available
Do not mail an old 2025 renewal form for a 2027 transaction.
Download the current form from the eligible license
Use the form generated for the active renewal period whenever available.
Answer every question
Incomplete paper applications create avoidable processing delays.
Use the current payment instructions
The Board forms page lists cashier’s check, money order or personal check for paper fees and states that fees are nonrefundable.
Mail fee/notary forms
COSBAR states that paper applications requiring a fee and/or notarization must be mailed; they cannot be accepted by email or fax.
After You Submit: Receipt, Processing and Final Verification
A submitted application is not the final compliance check. Confirm that Missouri actually shows the credential as valid.
Save the receipt
Use My Payments → Eye icon → Download Receipt and keep the transaction evidence.
Allow processing
COSBAR currently states approximately 3–5 business days for portal submissions, although review issues can take longer.
Verify the public record
Because the public listing updates nightly, allow the update cycle and then confirm status and expiration.
Salon and Establishment Renewal Is a Separate Transaction
Renewing your personal cosmetology license does not renew the shop, salon or rental-station credential.
$60 renewal
Individual professional credential.
$75 renewal
Separate full-service or rental-station establishment credential.
$150 renewal
Different fee category from ordinary cosmetology establishment renewal.
- A current personal license does not prove the physical business is licensed.
- A current establishment license does not prove every worker has an active individual credential.
- Ownership, location or business-name changes may require an amendment or new transaction rather than ordinary renewal.
- If you hold personal and business licenses, claim your individual MOPRO login first and then attach the business record.
Avoid Renewal Scams and Unofficial Payment Pages
The Missouri Board currently carries a consumer alert regarding phone-call scams. For renewal, reduce risk by beginning from the published Missouri government pages.
- Use mopro.mo.gov for the licensing portal.
- Use pr.mo.gov for COSBAR notices, forms and contact information.
- Do not trust a caller merely because they know your name or license number.
- If a payment request feels unusual, end the call and contact COSBAR using the published Board number.
- Never assume a third-party “renewal service” has actually renewed the Missouri government record.

Missouri Cosmetology License Renewal FAQs
When is Missouri cosmetology license renewal due?
Missouri cosmetology licenses renew biennially and expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. There is no normal September 30, 2026 renewal deadline. The next standard expiration is September 30, 2027.
Can I renew my Missouri cosmetology license online in 2026?
MOPRO is the official online renewal system, but routine renewal appears only when the credential is in an eligible renewal period. An active license expiring in 2027 should generally be prepared during 2026 rather than forcing an early renewal.
How much is Missouri cosmetology license renewal?
The current Missouri rule lists a $60 Board renewal fee for an ordinary cosmetology operator. Verify the final MOPRO checkout because online-payment charges may be additional.
Does a regular Missouri cosmetologist need continuing education for renewal?
The ordinary operator renewal rule does not impose the instructor’s eight-hour seminar requirement. The specific eight-hour Board-approved seminar rule applies to cosmetology instructors.
How much does a Missouri cosmetology instructor pay to renew?
The current fee rule lists $60 for the instructor renewal record, and Missouri’s instructor rule says that fee is submitted in addition to the regular operator renewal fee. A standard $60 operator plus $60 instructor combination therefore involves $120 in Board renewal fees before any online-payment charge.
What if my Missouri cosmetology license expired September 30, 2025?
Do not wait for the 2027 renewal cycle. During 2026 the license remains within the ordinary two-year reinstatement window. Use the reinstatement process, pay the applicable current fee and do not practice until valid authority is restored.
What if my Missouri cosmetology license has been expired more than two years?
Current Missouri rule 20 CSR 2085-7.050 provides a reinstatement-by-examination route after more than two years of expiration and specifies the practical portion of the licensure examination. Use the current COSBAR form and testing instructions.
Can I work with an inactive Missouri cosmetology license?
No. An inactive cosmetologist is not eligible to practice in Missouri. Complete the required reactivation process and verify the official status before providing regulated services.
Why is my license or renewal not showing in MOPRO?
The credential may not be in its renewal period, may be attached to another account, or your identity/email may not match the Board record. Verify the public status first. For registration problems call 833-373-2936 or email moprotech@pr.mo.gov; for licensing eligibility contact COSBAR.
What is the Missouri Board of Cosmetology phone number?
The Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners lists 573-751-1052 as its main telephone number and 866-762-9432 as toll free. The Board email is cosbar@pr.mo.gov.
Final Missouri Renewal Checklist
- Verify the exact license class, status and expiration in the official MOPRO search.
- Remember that September 30, 2027 is the next normal cosmetology expiration date.
- Do not try to force ordinary 2027 renewal during 2026 if MOPRO does not show the credential as eligible.
- Claim the correct existing MOPRO account before the renewal window becomes urgent.
- Keep the email tied to the Board and MOPRO record current.
- Use $60 as the current ordinary operator Board renewal fee, not an outdated $50 amount.
- If you are an instructor, plan for the separate instructor renewal fee and eight approved seminar hours.
- If your license expired in 2025, use reinstatement now rather than waiting for 2027.
- If the license has been expired more than two years, check the reinstatement-by-examination route.
- Prepare lawful-presence documentation for reinstatement/reactivation when required.
- Save your MOPRO receipt and recheck the public status after processing and the nightly database update.
- Verify personal and establishment licenses separately.
