Idaho Cosmetology Practical Exam: Before You Arrive
Bring your complete setup

Idaho Remote Cosmetology Practical Exam: Two-View Setup
ProV currently permits remote Idaho cosmetology testing, but the practical exam requires more than opening a laptop webcam.
Laptop / main camera
- Show the workspace, supplies and mannequin.
- Keep the area well lit.
- Avoid bright windows behind you.
- Appendix suggests the laptop roughly 35 inches away.
- It describes about an 80-degree angle toward the workspace.
Smartphone camera

- Aim it so the examiner can see required bags beneath the work area.

Bag placement and labeling
The remote-practical appendix instructs candidates to keep the bags labeled Items to be Disinfected, Trash and Soiled Linens together where the side-view phone can see them. It also directs candidates to label the bags on all four sides.

Expired Idaho Cosmetology License: Reinstatement or New Application?

Natural Hair Braiding & Makeup Artistry: Idaho Exemptions
Idaho law contains exemptions from this licensing chapter for people whose practice is limited to defined natural hair braiding and for businesses or people performing makeup artistry.
Natural hair braiding
The statutory definition includes activities such as twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking and braiding, plus specified extensions, accessories and topical products.
It can also include minor trimming incidental to braiding.
Where the braiding exemption stops
The statutory definition excludes using dyes, reactive chemicals or other preparations to change hair color or straighten, curl or alter the hair’s structure.
It also excludes specified chemical hair-joining methods such as bonding agents.

Idaho Cosmetology Safety & Disinfection Rules
DOPL says the Board is not currently engaged in rulemaking for 2026–2027, so existing rules remain in effect unless later changed.

Clean reusable instruments after each use and then disinfect or sterilize them before using them on another patron.
Follow the product manufacturer’s required contact time.
Single-use / porous items
Discard the item after the patron or give it to that patron to take home. It should not return for later professional reuse.
Hand hygiene
Wash with running water, soap and a single-use towel before each patron. When handwashing is impracticable, the rule provides for sanitizer containing at least 70% alcohol.
High-value compliance checks
- Skin-cutting callus shavers, credo-type blades and similar tools that cut below the skin are prohibited.
- Protect multi-client wax/paraffin products from contamination.
- Use disinfected or new single-use items when removing product from a multi-use container.
- Discard the used patron portion rather than returning it to the common product.
- Clean and disinfect pedicure bowls, basins, tubs, drill bits, internal piping and pumps before each use as required.
- Keep an identifiable first-aid kit readily accessible.

What happens if my Idaho cosmetology license expires?
An unrenewed license is canceled after expiration. Within five years, reinstatement may be available after meeting applicable requirements and paying the required amounts, including the current $35 reinstatement fee. After more than five years, a new application is required and DOPL may require competency evidence.
Does Idaho issue a temporary cosmetology license while my application is pending?
No. The Idaho Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board FAQ states that temporary licenses are not issued. Applicants should wait until the Idaho license is issued before practicing.

- Bring a full-size mannequin and the current NIC/ProV practical supplies.
- For remote practical testing, prepare both front and side camera views.
