2026 corrections: Pennsylvania’s cosmetologist examination is computer based and does not include a hands-on practical. The renewal fee is currently $97—not the older $67 amount still shown on some websites—and ordinary cosmetologist renewal requires no continuing education.

Pennsylvania Cosmetology License Requirements

Age

At least 16 years old

Use current identification showing the same legal name entered in PALS.

General education

Education exception

Age 35 or qualifying veteran

Applicants using an exception must upload the evidence requested by PALS.

School timing: the 1,250-hour program must generally cover at least eight consecutive months for a daytime student or 15 consecutive months for a nighttime student.

License category matters: cosmetologist, esthetician, nail technician, teacher, school and salon are separate Pennsylvania credentials. Do not use cosmetologist hours or fees for a different application.

Search the school’s Pennsylvania cosmetology-school license and confirm that it is active. A business registration or accreditation statement does not replace Board approval.

Review the complete cost

Compare tuition, registration, books, kit, uniform, transfer-hour, absence-makeup, transcript, refund and graduation charges.

Complete the attendance requirement

Track classroom and clinic hours. Keep personal copies of attendance summaries instead of waiting until graduation to discover missing time.

Confirm transfer hours in writing

Ask how many prior hours the school accepted, which curriculum areas remain and how the final transcript will show transferred education.

Obtain the school code

The school code used in PALS is the school’s Board-issued license number. Verify it with the school or through the license search.

Prepare the affidavit and transcript

Confirm that the school official completes the correct affidavit and that the official transcript includes completed hours and the school seal.

Submit the PALS application

Upload each item under the correct checklist category, pay the state fee and save the application number.

Pass the examination and verify issuance

Complete the Pearson examination, monitor PALS and search for the issued license before performing paid services.

The 2,000-Hour Pennsylvania Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is a formally approved training route. Ordinary employment, assisting in a salon or shadowing a stylist does not automatically create valid apprenticeship hours.

Take the Pennsylvania Exam After 900 Hours

A Pennsylvania cosmetology-school student may test early after completing at least 900 hours. Early examination does not shorten the 1,250-hour education requirement.

Recover an existing account

Use account recovery before creating a second profile. Duplicate profiles can separate an applicant from an existing license or application.

Choose the exact cosmetologist route. Do not select esthetician, nail technician, teacher or salon based only on similar wording.

Answer the route questions carefully

The answers determine whether PALS builds a school, early-testing, apprenticeship, reciprocity or other checklist.

Use the school’s Board license number. Applicants using education from outside Pennsylvania should follow the current instruction to enter CS00000.

Name mismatch: an ID problem can result in denied admission and loss of the $93 examination fee. Update the candidate record before arriving.

Scheduling conflict in official instructions: the handbook says to schedule at least 48 hours in advance, while Pearson’s updated program page says an appointment may sometimes be available one calendar day ahead. Schedule early and use the live availability shown by Pearson.

Testing Accommodations

Request accommodations before scheduling. Pearson must review and approve the request before the appointment can be arranged with the approved conditions.

Transfer an Out-of-State License to Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania may license an out-of-state cosmetologist through reciprocity, Act 41 or examination. The correct route depends on the issuing jurisdiction, current status, experience and disciplinary history.
