A new online profile does not automatically display an existing license. License linking is a separate step and is a common reason the renewal option appears missing.

Apply for a Florida Cosmetology License After School
Confirm school and program eligibility
Make sure the Florida school and cosmetology program satisfy the current education requirement and use your exact legal name.
Complete the required hours
Finish 1,200 hours, or use the school-certified 1,000-hour examination route when eligible.
Complete initial HIV/AIDS education
The initial course must be at least four hours and completed within the two years before applying. A qualifying state health-department course can be accepted for initial licensure.
Submit COSMO 1 and graduate certification
The school official completes the required graduate-certification section. Save the application and payment confirmation.
Monitor DBPR application status
Read every deficiency message. A name mismatch, missing school certification or incomplete background response can prevent exam authorization.
Pass both examination portions
Schedule through the official examination vendor after DBPR approves eligibility.

Florida Written Theory and Written Clinical Examinations
Florida’s cosmetologist examination is computer based. It has two written portions rather than a live mannequin practical examination.
Written Theory
Tests cosmetology concepts, laws, safety, sanitation, chemical knowledge and professional principles listed in the current candidate booklet.
Written Clinical
Tests clinical and procedural decision-making through computer-based questions rather than a live practical demonstration.
- Wait for DBPR approval before trying to schedule.
- Approved candidates can generally schedule with Pearson VUE within 72 hours.
- Use the current English or Spanish Candidate Information Booklet for ID, rescheduling and test-center rules.
- Pass both portions within two years from the first attempt of either portion.
- If the two-year window expires, both portions must be passed again.
- Submit COSMO 3 before attempting a retake after failure.

Can You Work While a Florida License or Registration Is Pending?
Florida has narrow work-before-issuance exceptions. They are different for cosmetologist examination applicants and specialist-registration applicants.

Group 2 includes cosmetologists, nail specialists, facial specialists and full specialists whose licenses expire in even-numbered years.

DBPR no longer prints and mails initial, renewed or duplicate cosmetology licenses. The renewed copy is sent electronically.

Log into the secure DBPR profile to print a license whenever needed. Do not pay an unofficial website for a copy.
Use the DBPR mobile app
After linking the license, use the same account credentials and select “My License” to view it on a mobile device.
- A past-due payment under a compliance order can block renewal until the account becomes current.
- Professional licensees must report qualifying criminal convictions or pleas to DBPR within 30 days.
- Maintain a current mailing address because official correspondence and service of process go to the address of record.

Florida Cosmetology Continuing Education and the 10-Year Exemption
Most active individual renewals require 10 hours from a Florida Board of Cosmetology-approved provider. Some long-term active licensees qualify for a statutory exemption.

Active license
The credential must be active, not merely current/inactive.
10 continuous years
The license must have been held continuously for at least 10 years.

When a completed course does not appear
- Confirm the provider and exact course are approved for Florida cosmetology renewal.
- Check whether the provider entered the correct profession and license number, including the applicable prefix.
- Ask when the provider transmitted completion to DBPR.
- Keep the certificate, receipt, course number and completion date.
- Contact DBPR before the deadline when the provider cannot correct the report.
- Do not upload a renewal HIV/AIDS course from an unapproved health-department provider; renewal courses must come from a Board-approved provider.
Already-Delinquent and Null-and-Void Florida Licenses
A current license that misses the 2026 deadline and a license that was already delinquent before this cycle are not the same situation.

- Wait for a new Current/Active Florida record before working.
Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Florida
Florida calls the standard route endorsement. The old-state license is not literally transferred or converted.

A salon must have its own DBPR facility license. Personal cosmetologist or specialist credentials do not replace the salon license.

Home, flea-market and mobile salons
Home salon
Separate the salon from living quarters with a permanent floor-to-ceiling wall, provide an entrance that does not pass through the home and provide compliant toilet access from the salon.
Flea-market salon
Unlike most new salons, a flea-market salon must pass inspection before DBPR issues the salon license.
Mobile salon
Maintain the required permanent business address, records and monthly operating itinerary, and comply with mobile-salon, local, ADA and OSHA requirements.

Florida Salon Inspection and License-Display Checklist
Most fixed salons are inspected without advance notice after licensing, generally within approximately 90 days. Routine inspection normally occurs biennially on a fiscal-year basis and can also result from complaints.

Who is exempt from Florida cosmetology continuing education?
A licensee can qualify when the license is active, has been held continuously for at least 10 years and has no discipline imposed against it. Verify that the exemption appears in the DBPR account or public license record.
Can an out-of-state cosmetologist transfer a license to Florida?
A person with a current active cosmetology license from another U.S. state may qualify through COSMO 4-B endorsement without Florida school hours or examination. Alaska Hair Dresser, foreign and apprenticeship applicants may need a different route.
Can I work after passing the Florida cosmetology examination?
After passing both portions, an examination applicant may work inside a licensed salon under a physically present current active Florida cosmetologist and must provide the salon owner or representative with a copy of the exam results.
