Florida Cosmetology License 2026: Get, Renew & Verify

Florida DBPR help • verified August 2, 2026 • independent guide

Choose the Right Florida License Action

Use this guide to apply for a Florida cosmetology license, renew through DBPR, complete continuing education, prepare for Pearson VUE exams, verify a professional or salon and fix expired-license or account problems.

The Florida Board of Cosmetology and DBPR control official licensing decisions. This independent page explains the task first; use official Florida systems for applications, payments, live status and final approval.

2026 deadline: Group 2 cosmetologists, nail specialists, facial specialists and full specialists must complete applicable CE and renew before midnight Eastern Time on November 2, 2026. A delinquent Group 2 credential becomes null and void on November 3, 2026 if it remains unrenewed.

Fast Answer: Apply, Renew or Verify

New Florida applicant: complete 1,200 approved school hours, or at least 1,000 hours plus school-certified competency for early testing; complete the initial four-hour HIV/AIDS course; submit COSMO 1; and pass the Written Theory and Written Clinical examinations.

Current license holder: verify your renewal group, complete 10 hours of approved CE, renew through DBPR Online Services and confirm the public status afterward. Consumer or employer: use the free DBPR lookup and check the individual and salon records separately.

Choose the Correct Florida License or Registration

Applying under the wrong category can create delays, extra fees or a license that does not cover the services you intend to provide.

Florida credential Minimum education Exam requirement Main services or use
Cosmetologist 1,200 hours, or 1,000 hours plus school-certified competency to test early Written Theory and Written Clinical Broad regulated hair, nail and basic skin-care services within Florida scope.
Nail Specialist 180 hours No Florida cosmetology examination for initial registration Manicuring, pedicuring and covered artificial-nail services.
Facial Specialist 220 hours No Florida cosmetology examination for initial registration Covered facial and skin-care services within specialist scope.
Full Specialist 400 hours No Florida cosmetology examination for initial registration Combines nail-specialist and facial-specialist services.
Limited Cosmetologist 1,200 hours at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Use COSMO 13 instructions Limited to facials, manicures and pedicures.
Cosmetology Salon Not a personal education credential No exam Licenses the facility where regulated services are performed.
Cosmetologist versus specialist: a Florida cosmetologist generally does not need separate nail- or facial-specialist registrations for services already included within cosmetology scope. A specialist registration has a narrower service scope.

How to Get a Florida Cosmetology License

Confirm age and education eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old or have received a high school diploma. Individual DBPR applications also require a Social Security number.

Choose a Florida cosmetology program

Verify that the school can certify Florida education and examination eligibility. Review tuition, kit costs, attendance, transfer credit, refund rules and transcript procedures before enrolling.

Complete the qualifying hours

Complete 1,200 hours, or at least 1,000 hours when the school certifies that you have met Florida’s minimum competency standards for early examination.

Complete the initial HIV/AIDS course

The initial course must be Board approved, at least four hours long and completed within the two years before the application is submitted.

Submit COSMO 1

Complete the correct application sections, obtain the school official’s certification, include the HIV/AIDS certificate and submit the required fee.

Wait for DBPR approval

DBPR reviews the application before Pearson VUE can schedule the examination. Check application status and read every deficiency notice.

Pass both examination portions

Pass Written Theory and Written Clinical within two years from the first attempt of either portion.

Verify license issuance

Search the DBPR database and confirm the license number, status and expiration before relying on the credential for independent work.

Early-testing consequence: if you test after 1,000 hours and fail an examination portion, you must return to school and complete the remaining hours needed to reach 1,200 before applying for reexamination.

COSMO 1 PDF: What the Application Actually Requires

The official COSMO 1 application contains separate checklists and school certifications for cosmetologists and specialists. Do not complete every section automatically.

Cosmetologist application

Complete Sections I–III and V–VI

  • Pay the $45 application fee listed on the current printable form.
  • Submit the approved initial HIV/AIDS certificate.
  • Have the Florida school complete Section III.
  • Submit evaluation records when prior schooling credit is used.
  • Answer all background questions.
  • Sign the affirmation in Section VI.
Specialist registration

Complete Sections I–II and IV–VI

  • Pay the $75 fee listed for Florida-educated specialist applicants.
  • Submit the initial HIV/AIDS certificate.
  • Have the school complete the eligibility certification.
  • Include the approved-program completion certificate.
  • Include prior-credit evaluation records where applicable.

Details applicants commonly miss

COSMO 1 field Official instruction Common mistake
Full legal name Use the complete name shown on the Social Security card. Using a nickname, initials or an unreported prior surname.
Prior names List aliases and former names used on licenses or education records. School transcript and application appear to belong to different people.
School completion date The school must enter the date the hours were actually completed. Entering a projected graduation date.
Transfer hours Only actual school hours may be evaluated. Counting work experience, apprenticeship, seminars or informal training.
Criminal-history answer Provide the required reports, dispositions and proof that sanctions were satisfied. Answering “No” without confirming whether records were legally sealed or expunged.
Affirmation The applicant must sign the written declaration. An otherwise complete application cannot be processed because it is unsigned.

Written Clinical

65 multiple-choice questions

  • Arrive approximately 30 minutes before the appointment.
  • Use only a permitted silent, handheld, nonprinting calculator without an alphabetic keypad.

  • Leave phones, notes, bags and unauthorized references outside the testing room.
  • Check the photo-bearing score report for errors before leaving.

Contact Pearson VUE at least two days before the appointment. Late cancellation or absence can forfeit examination fees.

Excused absence

Submit written verification and supporting evidence to Pearson VUE no later than four days after the scheduled examination.

Failed-exam review

Request a review within 21 days of the examination. Only the most recent failed examination may be reviewed.

Testing accommodations: submit the official special-accommodation application before each examination. Do not wait until the appointment day to request disability-related arrangements.

Can You Work While a Florida Application Is Pending?

The answer depends on the application type. “Application submitted” does not create one universal temporary license.

Applicant type When limited supervised work may begin Required proof and limits
Florida cosmetology examination applicant After passing both examination portions. Work under the physical supervision of a current Florida cosmetologist in a licensed salon. Give the salon owner a copy of the exam results and post the results at the workstation.
Florida nail, facial or full-specialist graduate After completing all hours and submitting the completed application and required fees. Provide the salon owner with the submitted application and school transcript. A properly registered specialist must remain physically present.
Applicant notified of a deficiency Work must stop under the pending-application exception. Inform the salon owner or supervisor and correct the deficiency before relying on the exception again.
Out-of-state endorsement applicant After the Florida license is issued. The pending-specialist work exception does not apply to endorsement applicants.
No general temporary license: Florida does not issue an ordinary temporary cosmetology license merely because an application or endorsement fee has been submitted.

Florida Cosmetology License Renewal in 2026

Personal credentials are divided into Group 1 and Group 2. Group 2 renews in even-numbered years and is the active 2026 renewal group.

Group 2 • 2026

Extended deadline

November 2, 2026

Complete the required CE and submit payment before midnight Eastern Time.

Cosmetology salons

Separate business deadline

November 30, 2026

Salon renewal is separate from every cosmetologist or specialist working at the location.

Current Group 2 renewal amounts

License situation By November 2, 2026 After November 2 Required form or action
Current Active → Active $40 $65 Complete CE and renew online.
Current Inactive → Inactive $40 $65 Renew inactive status; do not practice while inactive.
Current Active → Inactive $40 $70 Submit COSMO 11.
Current Inactive → Active $90 $115 Submit COSMO 11 and complete applicable CE.
Already Delinquent → Active or Inactive $85 Use the delinquent instructions immediately Renew before null-and-void status.
Delinquent Inactive → Active $135 Use the delinquent instructions immediately Submit COSMO 11, complete CE and reactivate.
Why DBPR pages show both $40 and $45: the normal fee structure includes a $40 renewal fee plus a $5 unlicensed-activity assessment. The official Group 2 renewal insert states that the $5 assessment is waived for this renewal period, making the ordinary on-time 2026 total $40.

Online renewal workflow

Verify license status and group

Confirm the license number, Active/Inactive/Delinquent status and expiration date in the public lookup.

Complete all 10 CE hours

Use approved providers, give them the correct license information and keep every completion certificate.

Recover or create the DBPR account

Use an existing account where possible and link the cosmetology license before looking for the renewal transaction.

Update contact information

Check the mailing address, telephone and email because DBPR uses the account email for official notices and electronic license delivery.

Review the transaction type

Make sure you are renewing Active, renewing Inactive or changing status. Different transactions have different fees.

Resolve compliance holds

A past-due compliance-order payment can block renewal even when CE and the renewal fee are complete.

Pay and save proof

Keep the confirmation page, receipt, email and transaction number.

Verify and print the renewed license

Confirm the new public expiration and download the electronic license from the secure account. DBPR no longer routinely prints and mails renewed licenses.

Florida Cosmetology Continuing Education

Active renewal requires 10 hours of Board-approved continuing education. The subjects are allocated rather than treated as one unrestricted 10-hour course.

Required subject Minimum hours What to check
HIV/AIDS 1 hour Course is approved for renewal CE, not merely initial licensure.
Sanitation and sterilization 3 hours Provider reports the correct subject allocation.
OSHA 0.5 hour Course appears under the approved requirement.
Workers’ compensation 0.5 hour Do not replace it with general business education.
Florida laws and rules 2 hours Content is Florida cosmetology-specific.
Chemical makeup 1 hour Course is Board approved.
Environmental issues 1 hour Subject is properly reported.
Cosmetology elective 1 hour Topic relates to cosmetology practice.
  • Search the provider or course in DBPR’s official CE search before paying.
  • Use the legal name and license number exactly as DBPR displays them.
  • Keep certificates even when the provider reports electronically.
  • Check the account before the deadline instead of assuming reporting is complete.
  • Contact the provider first when a completed course is missing.
Initial course versus renewal course: the four-hour initial HIV/AIDS course used for first licensure or endorsement is different from the one-hour HIV/AIDS subject inside the 10-hour renewal requirement.

DBPR Cosmetology Login and License-Linking Help

Returning user

Recover the existing account

Use Forgot User ID or Forgot Password instead of creating duplicate accounts. Confirm that you still control the account email.

First online transaction

Create an account and link the license

Creating a profile does not automatically attach an existing cosmetology credential or examination candidate ID.

Problem Likely reason Best fix
Renewal option is missing License is not linked, renewal period is not open or the credential is in Group 1. Check the public expiration and account-license relationship.
License is missing from the account It was not linked or is attached to an older account. Recover the prior account before creating another profile.
Examination retake option is missing The examination candidate ID is not linked. Link the candidate ID before starting COSMO 3 online.
CE is incomplete Provider has not reported it, used the wrong license number or offered an unapproved course. Contact the provider and verify course approval.
Fee is higher than expected Delinquency, status change, compliance order or another outstanding amount. Review the fee breakdown before paying.
Renewal paid but status unchanged CE, compliance payment or review remains incomplete. Save the receipt, check account messages and contact DBPR.
Old email is inaccessible Password recovery cannot reach the current user. Contact the Customer Contact Center with the license and identity information.

Florida Cosmetology License Lookup

DBPR’s public lookup is free and supports searches by name, license number, city or county and license type.

Open the official search

A private directory or a screenshot is not the current Florida licensing record.

Choose the strongest search type

Use the full license number when available. Otherwise, start with the legal surname and enough location information to narrow the result.

Open the detailed result

Match the person or business name, credential type, license number, status and expiration.

Check service scope

Do not treat cosmetologist, nail specialist, facial specialist and full specialist as interchangeable credentials.

Search the salon separately

A current individual license does not prove that the facility has an active cosmetology salon license.

Save dated proof

Keep a printout or screenshot when hiring, renting a station, purchasing insurance, booking a service or filing a complaint.

Lookup is free: do not pay an unofficial license-directory website merely to determine whether a Florida cosmetology professional or salon appears licensed.

Florida DBPR License Status Decoder

Status Plain-English meaning Safe next action
Current / Active The credential appears current and active. Confirm category, expiration and any restrictions.
Current / Inactive The credential is maintained but not active for practice. Use COSMO 11 and complete reactivation requirements before working.
Delinquent The normal renewal requirements were not completed on time. Complete the delinquent renewal before the license becomes null and void.
Null and Void Ordinary renewal is no longer available. Review COSMO 7 and document qualifying illness or economic hardship.
Suspended A disciplinary or other legal restriction prevents ordinary practice. Identify the controlling order; renewal payment alone may not clear it.
Revoked The license was revoked through disciplinary action. A revoked license cannot simply be renewed; a new application requires Board review.

Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Florida

Florida does not automatically transfer another state’s license and does not issue a temporary license. The most common qualifying route is licensure by endorsement.

Current active U.S. license

COSMO 4-B endorsement

An applicant currently licensed as a cosmetologist in another state may qualify without taking the Florida examination.

Cannot use endorsement

COSMO 2 examination route

A person who cannot endorse may qualify for Florida examination based on current or prior licensure in another state or country.

Foreign license

No direct endorsement

Foreign cosmetology licenses do not use ordinary COSMO 4-B endorsement. Florida-school evaluation and examination may be required.

COSMO 4-B PDF checklist

  • Hold a current and active cosmetology license from another U.S. state.
  • Be at least 16 years old or hold a high school diploma.
  • Possess a Social Security number.
  • Use the full legal name shown on the Social Security record.
  • List all states where you have held a cosmetology license and the date acquired.
  • Complete a Board-approved four-hour initial HIV/AIDS course within two years before applying.
  • Submit official transcripts when applicable.
  • Pay the $95 fee listed on the current printable COSMO 4-B form.
  • Answer background and prior-discipline questions completely.
  • Wait until the Florida license is issued before practicing.
Alaska Hair Dresser license: the COSMO 4-B instructions state that an applicant holding only Alaska’s Hair Dresser license is not eligible for Florida cosmetologist endorsement and should review the COSMO 2 route.
Moving out of Florida: request an official Florida license certification through DBPR Online Services. The current Board FAQ lists a $25 certification fee for each receiving state board.

Change a Name, Address or License Status

Task Correct route Important evidence or fee
Change main or mailing address Update through DBPR Online Services or submit the written change. Confirm which address type is being changed.
Change salon physical location Submit a new COSMO 6 salon application. A salon location is tied to the salon license and cannot be changed as an ordinary mailing update.
Legal name change Submit a written request or COSMO 11 instruction with the legal document. Marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order supporting the new name.
Active → Inactive Submit COSMO 11. The Board FAQ lists a $5 processing fee for the status change.
Inactive → Active Submit COSMO 11 and satisfy applicable CE. The Board FAQ lists a $50 processing/reactivation fee outside the renewal-cycle totals.
Certification to another state Request License Certification inside DBPR Online Services. Pay $25 for each receiving state board.
Address types: DBPR can maintain a main address, license mailing address and license location address. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

Delinquent and Null-and-Void Florida Licenses

Delinquent

Late renewal may remain available

  • Confirm the exact delinquent status.
  • Complete all required CE for active renewal.
  • Resolve unpaid compliance-order amounts.
  • Pay the delinquent renewal total shown by DBPR.
  • Verify Current status before working.
Null and Void

Use COSMO 7

  • Ordinary online renewal is no longer available.
  • Document illness or economic hardship that prevented renewal.
  • Complete a new approved four-hour initial HIV/AIDS course.
  • Submit the COSMO 7 fee and documentation.
  • Wait for approval before practicing.
Examination: the official null-and-void checklist states that a qualifying former Florida cosmetologist does not have to retake the Florida cosmetology examination.

Florida Limited Cosmetologist License

The limited cosmetologist license is not a general shortcut for applicants who completed fewer hours or want a restricted hair license.

Who may use COSMO 13

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind graduates

  • Complete 1,200 hours in the school’s Cosmetology Division.
  • Meet the age or high-school-diploma requirement.
  • Complete the approved initial HIV/AIDS course.
  • Submit the school’s graduate certification.
Service limitation

Only three service categories

  • Facials.
  • Manicures.
  • Pedicures.

It does not authorize the full service scope of an ordinary Florida cosmetologist license.

Florida Cosmetology Salon License

A personal cosmetology license does not license the business location. The salon license must be issued and available for posting before the salon opens.

New salon

Apply before opening

Submit COSMO 6, meet safety and sanitation rules and wait for license issuance.

Initial inspection

Usually after issuance

Most salons are inspected after licensing. Flea-market salons must be inspected before the license is issued.

Name, location or ownership

New application

Any of these changes void the previous salon license and require a new COSMO 6 application.

Home salon: the salon must be permanently separated from living quarters, have a separate entrance and use toilet and lavatory facilities separate from those used by the household.
2026 renewal: Florida cosmetology salon licenses expire November 30, 2026 for the current even-year cycle. Salon renewal does not require the individual 10-hour cosmetology CE package.

Florida Cosmetology License FAQs

How do I get a Florida cosmetology license?

Complete qualifying Florida cosmetology education, complete a Board-approved four-hour initial HIV/AIDS course, submit COSMO 1 and pass the Written Theory and Written Clinical examinations within two years.

How many school hours does Florida require?

The standard requirement is 1,200 hours. A Florida student may qualify to take the examination after at least 1,000 hours when the school certifies that the student met the minimum competency standards.

When is the Florida Group 2 renewal deadline in 2026?

Group 2 cosmetologists, facial specialists, nail specialists and full specialists must renew before midnight Eastern Time on November 2, 2026.

How much is the Florida cosmetology renewal fee in 2026?

The official Group 2 current-license insert lists $40 for an ordinary on-time Active or Inactive renewal because the $5 unlicensed-activity assessment is waived for this cycle. Late and status-change transactions cost more.

How many continuing education hours are required?

Cosmetologists, nail specialists, facial specialists and full specialists generally need 10 hours of Board-approved continuing education for active renewal.

How do I look up a Florida cosmetology license?

Use DBPR’s free license search. Search by name, license number, city or county, or license type, then confirm the credential category, status and expiration. Search the salon separately.

Can I transfer my cosmetology license to Florida?

A license does not automatically transfer. A person holding a current active cosmetology license in another U.S. state may qualify for COSMO 4-B endorsement without taking the Florida examination.

Can I work while my Florida application is pending?

A Florida examination applicant may work under physical supervision only after passing both examination portions and providing the salon with the results. Some Florida-trained specialist applicants have a separate pending-registration exception. Endorsement applicants must wait for Florida license issuance.

What happens when a Florida license becomes null and void?

Ordinary renewal is no longer available. A former licensee may use COSMO 7 by documenting qualifying illness or economic hardship, completing the required initial HIV/AIDS course and submitting the fee and application.

What is the Florida cosmetology license phone number?

Call the DBPR Customer Contact Center at 850-487-1395. Call Pearson VUE at 888-204-6230 for examination scheduling after DBPR approves eligibility.
