Missouri Board of Cosmetology: Lookup, MOPRO, Renewal & Exams
Use the correct Missouri route for license verification, applications, 2027 renewal preparation, expired licenses, reciprocity, Prov exams, salon licensing, complaints and Board contact.
This independent website is not the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners and cannot issue, renew, reinstate or verify a legal license.
Use the Correct Missouri Licensing Route
The official authority is the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, within the Missouri Division of Professional Registration. Missouri commonly shortens the Board name to COSBAR. MOPRO is the state licensing portal used for applications, available renewals, payments, duplicate-license requests, contact updates and other licensing actions.

Missouri Cosmetology License Lookup
Missouri’s public license search is part of MOPRO. Search the exact professional or establishment record before relying on an old wall certificate, screenshot, business listing or payment receipt.
MOPRO Registration and Account Access
MOPRO became the state’s professional-licensing system for COSBAR users in 2025. New users register first; existing users log in with their current credentials. MOPRO can support applications, available renewals, payments, duplicate licenses and account-information changes.
Existing individual license
Register using the individual-license route and enter identifying information exactly as it appears in the state record.
Individual + business license
MOPRO instructs users who hold both to claim the individual license first, then add the business record after login.
Registration problem
Do not create repeated accounts. First confirm the email and identity details on the Board record, then use MOPRO support if the account still will not connect.

Missouri Cosmetology License Classes and Training Routes
Missouri uses specific credential classes rather than one generic beauty license. The common cosmetology classes include Class CA hairdressing and manicuring, Class CH hairdressing, Class E esthetician and Class MO manicurist. The Board also regulates instructors, apprentices, establishments, schools, barbers and crossover credentials.
| Route | Missouri classification | Important training point |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology | Class CA / Class CH | Missouri rules distinguish school, public vocational-technical and apprenticeship routes; the exact required training depends on the route and credential. |
| Esthetics | Class E | The current apprenticeship curriculum requires 1,500 hours for esthetician apprenticeship training. |
| Manicuring | Class MO | The current apprenticeship curriculum requires 800 hours for manicuring apprenticeship training. |
| Cosmetology apprenticeship | Apprentice cosmetology | The current apprenticeship curriculum requires 3,000 hours for cosmetology apprenticeship training. |
| Public vo-tech cosmetology | School route | Missouri’s rule provides a 1,220-hour minimum for public vocational-technical cosmetology programs. |
Do not use apprenticeship hours as a substitute for a school program or vice versa without checking the Board rules. Missouri’s examination rule treats the training routes separately.
Missouri Cosmetology License Renewal: 2026 vs. 2027
Missouri barber and cosmetology licenses and registrations, including school licenses, renew biennially and expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. That makes September 30, 2027 the next regular statewide expiration date after the 2025 cycle.
Active through 2027
Use 2026 to verify your public record, claim the correct MOPRO account, update your contact information and resolve name or account-linking problems before renewal opens.
Expired from 2025
Do not wait for 2027. Use the applicable reinstatement or reactivation process and do not provide regulated services until the state record shows lawful authority.

Current Missouri COSBAR Fees
The current Missouri Secretary of State fee rule, 20 CSR 2085-3.010, lists the following common Board amounts. Online transaction charges can be separate, so verify the final amount shown in MOPRO before paying.
| License or action | Current Board fee | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology operator renewal | $60 | Ordinary operator renewal. |
| Cosmetology operator reinstatement | $90 | Includes the late-fee component under the current rule. |
| Cosmetology operator inactive status | $30 | Inactive status does not authorize active practice. |
| Cosmetology instructor renewal | $60 | Instructor rules also include education or seminar requirements. |
| Cosmetology establishment application/license | $100 | Applies to full-service and rental-station establishment licensing. |
| Cosmetology establishment renewal | $75 | Separate from an operator’s personal license. |
| Operator reciprocity | $100 | For qualifying out-of-state applicants. |
| Student or apprentice enrollment | $25 | Current fee rule lists $25 for cosmetology student or apprentice enrollment. |
Missouri Cosmetology and Barber Exams Through Prov
The Missouri Board currently uses Prov for cosmetology and barber examinations. Applicants should complete the Missouri eligibility process first and use the current Missouri candidate information bulletin before scheduling.
Written / theory exams
The current 2026 Prov Missouri bulletin lists written examinations at $90 each.
Practical exams
The same current bulletin lists practical examinations at $60 each.
Exam categories differ by license class. Prov currently lists NIC theory and practical examinations for Missouri cosmetology, hair design, barber styling, instructor, esthetics and nail technology categories as applicable.
Moving an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Missouri
Missouri offers reciprocity for qualifying applicants who hold a current license from another U.S. state, territory or the District of Columbia. The current reciprocity application requires proof of current licensure and at least one year of licensure in the other jurisdiction.
Missouri COSBAR Forms and Processing Times
The Board’s forms page groups applications for apprentices, examinations, reinstatement, establishments, schools, reciprocity, inactive-license reactivation, duplicate licenses, complaints, military temporary licenses and other actions.
Online / MOPRO submissions
The Board currently states approximately 3–5 business days from online submission for routine processing, although review issues or missing information can take longer.
Paper submissions
The Board currently states approximately 3–5 business days after the application reaches the COSBAR office, plus mailing time. Mail containing a fee first passes through accounting and central mail processing.
Missouri Salon, Shop and Rental-Station Licensing
A personal operator license does not replace an establishment license. Missouri separately regulates cosmetology establishments, full-service shops and rental stations. Search the business credential separately from the practitioner’s credential.
Opening
The current fee rule lists a $100 application/license fee for a cosmetology establishment, including full-service and rental-station categories.
Renewing
The current ordinary cosmetology-establishment renewal fee is $75.
Changes
Ownership, location, co-owner and other changes can use separate Board transactions. Do not assume an ordinary renewal covers a structural business change.
Missouri Cosmetology Complaints and Discipline
COSBAR accepts complaints and publishes disciplinary records. If you are checking a professional for consumer or employment reasons, use both the current license record and the Board’s discipline information rather than treating one search as the whole history.
File a complaint
Use the current complaint route available from COSBAR or MOPRO. Include accurate dates, names, license numbers and supporting records when available.
Check disciplinary records
The Board maintains a public discipline page with named records and action documents. A currently active license does not by itself mean there has never been disciplinary history.
Missouri Cosmetology Rules and State Law
The Board operates under Missouri statutes and administrative rules covering licensing, fees, renewal, instructors, apprenticeships, establishments, sanitation, schools and discipline. The current Missouri Code of State Regulations places COSBAR rules under Division 2085.
