Ohio exam, lookup, CE and eLicense help • updated August 2, 2026

Choose Your Ohio License or Exam Action

Use this guide to prepare for the Ohio cosmetology or esthetics theory test, complete an original practice quiz, verify a professional or salon license, fix eLicense login problems, understand continuing education, renew a credential, check fees or follow the correct work-permit and expired-license path.

The official agency is the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board. This independent website does not issue licenses, provide official exam questions or perform live database searches; use eLicense Ohio and official Ohio rules for final applications, payments and legal status.

2026 application warning: an incomplete Ohio application can be treated as abandoned after specified six- or twelve-month periods. The Board sends deficiency notices to the email address on file, and a new application and fee may be required after abandonment.

eLicense can be active in only one browser session, and a session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Before visiting or mailing: public address listings have changed over time. Confirm the exact office, examination or mailing destination with the Board or the instructions attached to your current appointment or application.

Ohio Cosmetology State Board Login: eLicense Help

The official login is eLicense Ohio. Use it to apply, renew, update information and manage an existing license or application.

Existing Licensee

Use your existing record

Choose the existing-licensee route when you currently hold, previously held or previously applied for an Ohio license through a participating Board.

New Applicant

Create a new application account

Choose the new-applicant route only when you have not previously held or applied for a credential covered by the eLicense system.

Login problem Likely reason Best next action
License missing from dashboard The account may not be linked to the existing license or a second account was created. Contact the licensing Board and ask for account-linking or merge guidance.
Already registered message A prior account exists with matching identifying information. Use Forgot User ID or Reset Password instead of registering again.
Password email missing Spam filtering, an outdated email address or delivery delay. Check spam, wait briefly and contact support if the email on file is inaccessible.
Session ends unexpectedly Thirty minutes of inactivity or the application was opened in another browser session. Use one current browser session and save each section as you work.
Renewal option not visible The renewal period may not be open or the credential may require restoration rather than renewal. Check the public status and expiration date before contacting the Board.
Page or payment screen fails Mobile-browser, cache or unsupported-browser problem. Use the latest Chrome or Firefox on a desktop or laptop.
Who to call: eLicense technical support can help with registration, login and portal navigation. It cannot decide whether you qualify for a license, work permit, CE exemption, examination or restoration.

State Board Cosmetology License Lookup in Ohio

Ohio’s public lookup covers professional, business and occupational records and says its information is updated daily. Search the individual and the salon or business separately.

Open the official Ohio lookup

Use eLicense Ohio rather than relying on a wall certificate, social-media profile or old screenshot.

Select the correct Board

Choose the Cosmetology and Barber Board when the search form offers a Board filter.

Begin with minimal information

Try the last name and first initial. When you have the license number, enter the complete number including any prefix, suffix or punctuation.

Open the complete record

Verify legal name, license type, number, status, effective date and expiration date.

Save dated proof

Print or save the detailed result when employment, booth rental, insurance, salon inspection or client safety depends on the status.

Result What it means Next action
Active The credential appears active on the lookup date. Still confirm the correct license type and expiration date.
Pending / In Review An application or action remains unfinished or under review. Check eLicense messages and required-document notices.
Expired Ordinary active practice should not be assumed. Use the restoration or expired-license route.
Inactive The credential is not currently active for ordinary practice. Complete the active-status restoration requirements.
Closed The record or application is no longer open. Ask the Board whether a new application is required.
No result The search may be too narrow or use the wrong name or number. Retry with fewer fields, a former name or the exact credential number.

Ohio State Board Cosmetology License Types and Training Hours

The license category controls the services a professional may offer. Ohio’s current school-curriculum rule became effective January 1, 2026.

Ohio license path Minimum training Scope reminder
Cosmetologist 1,500 hours May practice one or more branches of cosmetology in a licensed facility.
Hair designer 1,000 hours Hair-design services only; do not use older 1,200-hour information.
Esthetician 600 hours Esthetics only, not every branch of cosmetology.
Manicurist 200 hours Manicuring and nail services within Ohio’s license definition.
Barber 1,800 hours Barbering follows its own licensing and renewal provisions.
Barber program for qualifying licensed cosmetologists or hair designers 1,000 hours A separate crossover curriculum route.
School-selection check: confirm the school is licensed, the exact program matches the credential you want, the hours satisfy the current Ohio rule and the enrollment agreement separately identifies tuition, books, kit costs, attendance and refund terms.

Ohio State Board Test Application, Retake and Test-Day Preparation

The examination application, examination attempt and final license issuance are separate steps and can carry separate fees.

Confirm school completion and the correct license category

Verify that the school reports the required program and hours for cosmetology, esthetics, hair design or manicuring.

Apply electronically

Use eLicense Ohio and keep the application number, payment receipt and every document-upload confirmation.

Watch the email address on file

Eligibility, deficiency and scheduling notices may be sent electronically. Check spam and update an inaccessible email before it causes a missed deadline.

Use the current Testing Information Packet

Study the exact credential packet and confirm current identification, arrival, prohibited-item and testing instructions.

Handle a failure or no-show correctly

A failed attempt and a missed examination use different reapplication fees. Follow the eLicense action shown for your record.

Verify license issuance after passing

Passing the examination does not by itself prove that an active Ohio license has been issued. Check eLicense and the public lookup.

Practical-exam packing list warning: old Ohio practical packets remain online. Do not buy or pack a kit from an undated blog, marketplace listing or old PDF. Use the current instructions attached to your exact examination record.

Ohio’s 2026 Application-Abandonment Rules

An abandoned application can require a completely new submission and another fee.

6 months

Incomplete deficiency

An identified application deficiency remains incomplete for six months after notice.

12 months

Required exams

The applicant does not pass required examinations within 12 months of the initial scheduled examination date.

6 months

Exam-eligible inactivity

The applicant is exam eligible but does not schedule or appear for six months.

12 months

Other requirements

Another licensing requirement remains incomplete for 12 months after the deficiency notice.

Email counts as notice: the rule states that notice is complete when the Board transmits the email to the address on file. Keep the address current and save every deficiency message.

Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Continuing Education

Most covered active cosmetology, branch, advanced and instructor renewals require four approved CE hours during the biennial licensing period.

Required subject

1 hour: Ohio laws and rules

The course should cover updates to Ohio laws or rules regulating the applicable cosmetology or barbering practice.

Required subject

3 hours: safety and infection control

Use a Board-approved provider and retain the completion certificate for renewal or audit.

CE situation Current Ohio rule What to do
First licensing period Generally exempt from ordinary CE until the renewal period beginning after initial licensure, except required human-trafficking training. Still complete the renewal application and fee when due.
Multiple covered licenses The same four completed hours may satisfy more than one covered Board license. Confirm every credential appears correctly in eLicense.
Prior-cycle hours Hours from an earlier biennial cycle do not carry forward. Complete courses during the applicable current cycle.
Identical repeated course Identical instruction completed during the same renewal period does not receive duplicate credit. Choose a different approved course when more credit is needed.
Age 65 before cycle The licensee is exempt from ordinary CE. Renewal and fees still apply unless another rule says otherwise.
Licensed for 30 years before cycle The licensee is exempt from ordinary CE. Keep records supporting the exemption if requested.
Emergency, prolonged illness or active military service A waiver or extension may be available. Apply and obtain Board approval rather than assuming an automatic exemption.

What should appear on a CE certificate?

  • Provider name.
  • Board course-approval number.
  • Course title and course number.
  • Licensee name and license or registration number.
  • Completion date.
  • Total hours completed in each covered subject.
Before buying CE: a course advertised as “Ohio cosmetology CE” is not automatically Board-approved. Confirm current approval before payment.

Ohio Cosmetology License Renewal for the 2025–2027 Cycle

Ohio Chapter 4713 licenses expire on the last day of January in the applicable odd-numbered year.

Complete applicable CE January 15, 2027

Resolve missing certificates or provider issues before submitting a last-minute renewal.

Renew the credential January 31, 2027

Use eLicense during the open renewal period and verify that the public record receives the new expiration date.

Verify the existing record

Check credential type, legal name, status and current expiration in the public lookup.

Complete applicable CE

Finish one hour of law/rule updates and three hours of safety/infection control unless a valid exemption applies.

Log in to eLicense

Choose the correct personal credential rather than a salon, school or unrelated license record.

Review and pay

Update contact information, answer required questions and verify every fee before submission.

Save proof and recheck status

Keep the receipt and confirmation, then confirm active status and the updated expiration in license lookup.

Receipt warning: payment confirms a transaction, not necessarily final Board approval. Missing CE, unpaid fines, disciplinary restrictions or another deficiency can affect renewal.

Ohio Cosmetology Fees and Temporary Work Permit

Use the official eLicense cart for the final total. The current rule lists these common base fees.

Action Current rule amount Important distinction
Temporary pre-examination work permit $15 Limited supervised authority; not a full license.
Initial cosmetology or branch examination application $40 Application to take the examination.
Exam application after no-show $50 Applies after the applicant failed to appear.
Cosmetology or branch retake $35 Applies after appearing but failing to pass.
Initial license issuance $45 Separate from the examination application.
Out-of-state qualifying license issuance $70 Use the applicable reciprocity or out-of-state route.
Covered personal-license renewal after June 30, 2025 $65 Biennial personal-license renewal.
Inactive status $25 per biennium Inactive does not authorize ordinary practice.
Duplicate license $30 Replacement credential only.
Salon or barber-shop renewal after June 30, 2025 $75 Business-location license, separate from personal credentials.

Temporary pre-examination work-permit limits

Basic qualifying conditions

  • Applicant seeks a practicing or instructor license.
  • Applicant applied for admission to the examination.
  • Applicant has not previously failed the applicable examination.
  • Applicant pays the fee and meets other Board conditions.

Permit restrictions

  • Practice must be under an appropriately licensed supervisor.
  • The practicing permit ordinarily runs only until the scheduled examination date.
  • An instructor permit may not exceed 120 days.
  • The permit is not an active permanent license.

Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Esthetician License Help

An Ohio esthetician license is a branch license. It authorizes esthetics within Ohio’s defined scope, not every service covered by a full cosmetologist license.

Training

600 approved hours

The current Ohio curriculum rule requires at least 600 hours for the initial esthetics program.

Theory examination

100 questions, 90 minutes

Infection control represents 45% of the official esthetics theory blueprint.

Scope limit

Esthetics only

An esthetician may practice esthetics but no other branch of cosmetology under the esthetician credential.

Advanced-service warning: Ohio cosmetology rules prohibit services outside the credential’s scope, including certain invasive or medically oriented procedures. Confirm the exact current rule before offering dermaplaning, tattoo removal, lymphatic drainage or services claiming medical or healing benefits.

Before booking, hiring or renting to an esthetician

  • Verify the individual esthetician or advanced-esthetics credential.
  • Verify active status and expiration.
  • Check that the service falls within the Ohio esthetics scope.
  • Verify the salon or facility license separately.
  • Save dated lookup proof when the decision has legal or insurance consequences.

Expired, Inactive or Closed Ohio Cosmetology License

Start with the exact eLicense status. Ordinary renewal, inactive-to-active restoration, expired-license restoration and disciplinary reinstatement are not the same action.

Status What it means for practice Likely route
Active Credential appears active until its listed expiration, subject to restrictions. Renew during the open period and complete applicable CE.
Inactive Not active for ordinary practice. Complete a renewal application, applicable CE and the renewal fee to restore active status.
Expired Do not assume authority to work. Use the restoration calculation and complete applicable CE.
Closed application The application is no longer open or usable. Ask whether a new application and fee are required.
Suspended or revoked Disciplinary restrictions control the license. Follow the Board order; ordinary renewal does not override discipline.
Expired-license fee calculation: the current rule generally uses the current renewal fee plus a $45 lapsed-renewal fee for each elapsed renewal period, up to three renewal periods, for licenses restorable under the cited Ohio provision.

Looking for the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology?

Ohio eLicense cannot verify, renew or manage a Pennsylvania cosmetology credential. Pennsylvania uses the State Board of Cosmetology and the Pennsylvania Licensing System, commonly called PALS.

Pennsylvania license holders

Use PALS to register or log in, apply, renew, update a license and check an application.

Clients and employers

Use PALS person, facility and disciplinary searches to verify a Pennsylvania record.

Ohio Exam and License Mistakes to Avoid

Studying every topic equally

Use official subject weights. The highest-value topics deserve the largest study blocks.

Using unofficial “real questions”

Question dumps can be inaccurate, outdated or improperly represented as official exam content.

Creating multiple eLicense accounts

Recover or link the existing account instead of creating duplicate identity records.

Ignoring Board email

Application-deficiency and exam notices can trigger the 2026 abandonment deadlines.

Buying unapproved CE

Confirm current Board approval before paying for an online or classroom course.

Working from a receipt

Payment, passing scores or a submitted application do not automatically prove active authority.
