Use the current Prov West Virginia candidate bulletin and verify the charge shown at scheduling.

Official West Virginia State Board of Cosmetology

People often search for the “WV State Board of Cosmetology,” but the agency’s official name is the West Virginia State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. West Virginia Code Chapter 30, Article 27 provides the statutory framework for the Board’s licensing and regulatory work.

Practitioners

The Board regulates barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians, aestheticians, hair stylists, waxing specialists and instructors.

Facilities

Salon/shop licensing, inspections, schools and booth-rental requirements are separate from the practitioner credential.

Consumer protection

The Board enforces licensing, sanitation and safety standards and accepts complaints involving licensees, facilities and unlicensed activity.

Important distinction: an LLC, business registration or tax account does not replace the professional salon/shop license issued by the Board.

WV Board of Cosmetology License Lookup

Use the Board’s official Verify a License service before hiring a practitioner, renting a booth, booking a regulated service, filing a complaint or relying on an old printed credential.

1

Open the official Board lookup

Start with the West Virginia Board rather than a private paid directory.

2

Search the Board-record name or license number

Use the legal or Board-record name. A complete license number is usually the clearest identifier when several people have similar names.

3

Confirm the credential type

Cosmetologist, aesthetician, nail technician, hair stylist, barber and waxing specialist credentials are not interchangeable.

4

Check status and expiration

A database result, old wall license or renewal receipt should not be treated as proof that the credential is currently usable.

5

Check the salon or shop separately

West Virginia requires regulated salons and day spas to hold a Board-issued facility license in addition to individual practitioner licenses.

Consumer check: the Board tells consumers that practitioner licenses should be displayed at the station where the person works and the salon/shop license should be displayed for public view.

WV State Board of Cosmetology License Renewal

Individual barber, cosmetologist, aesthetician, nail technician, hair stylist and waxing specialist licenses renew annually for $35 and are due January 1. Individual licenses, salon/shop licenses and booth rental certificates can be renewed online. Instructor certification renewals are handled by mail according to the Board FAQ.

Individual renewal $35
Statutory due date January 1
January Board grace period
From February 1 +$10/month late fee

Renew online or by mail

Use the Board’s official renewal page. If online renewal is unavailable, the Board allows mailed renewal payment by check or money order to WVBBC, P.O. Box 40235, Charleston, WV 25364.

Credential Online renewal Mail option Normal annual due date
Individual practitioner Yes Yes January 1
Instructor certification Board FAQ says mail Yes January 1
Salon / shop Yes Yes July 1
Booth rental Yes Yes July 1

Late renewal

The Board provides a grace period through January for individual licenses and instructor certificates. Beginning February 1, a $10 late fee is added for each month the renewal remains late. The Board says individual-license and instructor-certification renewal fees cannot exceed $205.

Salon/shop and booth-rental credentials have a July grace period; monthly late charges begin August 1. The Board caps booth-rental renewal fees at $100 and states that late salon/shop renewals do not have the same cap.

Do not confuse payment with active authority to practice. After a late renewal, check the public Board record again rather than relying only on a receipt or submitted form.

Does West Virginia Require Continuing Education for Renewal?

No routine continuing education is currently required for active barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians, aestheticians, hair stylists, waxing specialists and instructors. The Board states that House Bill 2325 removed CE as a professional license and certificate renewal requirement effective May 8, 2022.

Older Board documents and old articles can still surface prior CE rules. Use the Board’s current Continuing Education notice instead of purchasing a course solely because an outdated page says four hours are required.

West Virginia Cosmetology Board Fees

The Board’s current fee page lists the following common amounts. Always check the current form or Board checkout before paying because a fee can change after an article is published.

How to Get a West Virginia Cosmetology License

For the standard school route, the Board directs applicants through an approved school, health certification, student registration, required training, third-party examination and the initial-license application.

Profession Required school hours Next major step
Cosmetology 1,800 Complete the Board-approved education and examination route.
Barbering 1,200 Complete the applicable third-party examinations.
Hair Stylist 1,000 Complete the applicable examination and licensure process.
Aesthetician 600 Apply and test in the aesthetician category.
Nail Technician 400 Apply and test in the nail technician category.

Initial-license application checklist

The current initial-license application asks for a copy of photo ID, the $35 licensure fee, a copy of the Social Security card, notarized school transcript, a clear recent photograph, NIC practical and written examination results, a completed Certificate of Health and proof of high-school completion, GED or applicable ATB results.

If training was completed in another state, the application says the training verification must be sent directly from that state board to West Virginia. If your name differs across submitted records, include official name-change documentation.

Published processing estimate: the current initial-license application says applications are generally processed within 1–2 weeks after receipt. Treat this as an estimate, not a guaranteed issuance date.

West Virginia Cosmetology Exam: Use the Current Prov Bulletin

The Board uses Prov as its third-party examination provider. Prov’s January 17, 2026 West Virginia Candidate Information Bulletin lists theory and practical examinations for cosmetology and several other regulated categories. Theory exams may also be available by remote proctoring when the bulletin allows it.

Current Prov bulletin

The 2026 bulletin lists a $99 written exam fee and a $129 practical exam fee.

Fee-source conflict to notice

The Board’s separate fee page / Series 6 information can display different examination figures. Because the sources do not fully match, verify the amount shown by Prov at scheduling and contact the Board if the charge conflicts with current Board guidance.

The Prov bulletin states that official exam results are emailed to candidates and provided to the state within 1–3 days after testing. Prov does not decide which exam you are required to take; resolve that with your school or the Board before scheduling.

Read the current West Virginia Prov Candidate Information Bulletin.

West Virginia Cosmetology Apprenticeship Is an Active Path

West Virginia now has an active cosmetology apprenticeship route under Series 16. This matters because older private guides may still say apprenticeship is unavailable.

Salon apprenticeship

3,600 clock hours

A qualifying cosmetology apprentice may complete the full training route through an approved apprenticeship provider in a licensed salon or shop.

Combined route

2,600 + 1,000 hours

Series 16 also provides a combined route using salon apprenticeship hours plus approved cosmetology-school hours.

The Board’s apprenticeship application requires the provider to hold an active barber or cosmetologist license for at least five years, be in good standing and meet the required salon-work history. The apprentice cannot begin training until the salon/shop has been inspected and approved for the apprenticeship.

Moving a Cosmetology License to West Virginia

West Virginia’s standard reciprocity process and the state’s Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act are separate routes. Do not assume that holding an out-of-state license automatically authorizes practice in West Virginia.

Standard reciprocity process

1

Request license certification

Ask the board where you currently hold a valid license to send certification and training verification directly to the West Virginia Board.

2

Get separate training verification when needed

If you trained in a different state from the state that issued your current license, request training verification from the training state as well.

3

Complete the reciprocity application

The Board says an applicant will not be considered without proper documentation. Mail the complete package to the Board’s Charleston mailing address.

4

Allow time for third-party verification

The Board warns that another state may take 4–6 weeks to process certification or training verification.

5

Pay the published reciprocity fee

The Board currently lists a $100 reciprocity fee. Confirm the current form before mailing.

Universal licensing: West Virginia Code §30-1-27 creates a separate pathway for certain applicants who establish West Virginia residence or are qualifying military spouses and hold a same-discipline, same-practice-level credential in another state. Review every statutory condition instead of assuming automatic approval.
Cosmetology Compact: West Virginia enacted Interstate Cosmetology Licensure Compact provisions in 2026. Do not rely on a future multistate-license route until the applicable compact systems and application process are actually available for use.

West Virginia Salon, Shop and Booth Licensing

A practitioner license covers the individual. A salon/shop license covers the regulated business location. Booth rental can create an additional Board registration requirement.

Facility action Published fee Due date / timing Key point
Initial salon/shop opening $90 Submit 20 days before planned opening Application includes opening request, electrical certification and license request.
Salon/shop annual renewal $40 July 1 Separate from individual practitioner renewal.
Initial booth rental $15 Before qualifying booth operation Separate Board registration can apply.
Booth annual renewal $15 July 1 Update the salon/shop number if the booth location changes.

Before opening a salon or shop

Complete the current Shop Opening and License Application, including the electrical-certification section, and submit the $90 fee at least 20 days before the planned opening. The Board sends an opening letter that must be posted in the salon/shop and then arranges an inspection. If corrections are needed, another inspection may be required before the permanent shop license is issued.

The current application also states that in-home salons need a separate entrance, accessible restroom arrangement and physical separation from living areas with a solid lockable door.

Read the official salon-opening steps.

How to File a Complaint with the West Virginia Board

The Board accepts complaints involving practitioners, facilities and unlicensed activity. For a service or sanitation concern, its consumer guidance suggests first discussing the matter with the salon or facility owner or manager when appropriate. If an injury occurred, document the condition and seek medical attention when necessary.

An online complaint can be submitted through the Board’s File a Complaint page. The form requests information about the person or business complained against and a detailed description. The online form also allows an anonymous complaint by entering “Anonymous” in the complainant fields.

Helpful evidence: include the salon/shop name, address, phone number, practitioner name, incident date, witness details and a clear description when available. The Board may share complaint information with the party complained against while investigating or enforcing state law.
