Utah Cosmetology License 2026: 1,250 Hours, Exams, Fees & Renewal

Utah DOPL licensing guide • updated for 2026 rules

Utah Cosmetology License: 1,250 Hours, Exams, Application, Renewal & Lookup

Utah changed its cosmetology licensing structure in 2026. A new applicant pursuing the current Cosmetology license generally completes 1,250 hours through an approved school or 1,250 hours through an approved apprenticeship, satisfies the examination requirements, and applies through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing.

This independent guide also explains the older Cosmetologist/Barber credential, out-of-state licensing, renewal, license verification, fees and common application problems.

Utah Cosmetology License Requirements in 2026

For a new Utah Cosmetology license under the licensing structure effective in 2026, the main education route is at least 1,250 hours at a licensed or recognized school. Utah also allows an approved 1,250-hour cosmetologist apprenticeship. Applicants must meet DOPL’s general application requirements and the applicable examination requirements before licensure.

School route 1,250 hours
Apprenticeship 1,250 hours
Application fee $60
Renewal fee $52
Important 2026 change: older Utah information may still say that a Cosmetologist/Barber applicant needs 1,600 school hours or 2,500 apprenticeship hours. Those figures belong to the legacy licensing structure and certain transition applicants. A person beginning the current Cosmetology license route in 2026 should use the new 1,250-hour requirements instead.

What Changed in Utah Cosmetology Licensing in 2026?

Utah restructured Chapter 58-11a beginning January 1, 2026. The current system separates a new Cosmetology license from several narrower permits and advanced licenses instead of simply continuing the previous licensing structure unchanged.

Current route

New Cosmetology license

The current license requires a qualifying 1,250-hour cosmetology curriculum or an approved 1,250-hour cosmetologist apprenticeship. Utah law says a holder of this Cosmetology license may be known as a cosmetologist or a barber.

Legacy route

Cosmetologist/Barber license

Beginning January 1, 2026, existing Cosmetologist/Barber licenses became legacy credentials. DOPL generally does not issue a new legacy Cosmetology/Barbering license after that date except for qualifying students or apprentices who began the old route before the statutory transition date.

Why search results can look confusing: Utah’s public database still contains older license categories because thousands of professionals were licensed under the previous system. A legacy credential does not automatically mean the license is invalid; check its current DOPL status and expiration.

What Does the Current Utah Cosmetology License Cover?

The 2026 Cosmetology license is a broad beauty-services credential. Utah law includes hair services, haircutting, barbering-related services, specified eyebrow and eyelash services, manual hair removal, basic esthetics and nail technology within its defined scope.

Hair

Styling, shampooing, cutting, coloring, permanent waving, chemical services, hairpieces, weaving and related hair services within the statutory scope.

Basic skin services

Specified cosmetic skin-care services, manual extraction, manual hair removal, eyebrow work and limited chemical exfoliation as allowed by Utah law and rule.

Nail services

Manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nails and other nail services described within Utah’s cosmetology scope.

Scope boundary: a Cosmetology license does not automatically authorize every advanced esthetics, electrology, laser, medical, tattoo, permanent-makeup or other specialized procedure. Check the exact Utah license or permit required before adding a service.

How to Get a Utah Cosmetology License

1

Choose the current Cosmetology credential

Make sure the services you intend to perform fit the current Utah Cosmetology license. Do not enroll in an older Cosmetologist/Barber program simply because an outdated website still uses that title.

2

Complete an approved education route

Complete at least 1,250 hours through a licensed or recognized cosmetology school, or register for and complete an approved 1,250-hour cosmetologist apprenticeship.

3

Complete the required examinations

Utah’s licensing rules require the applicable cosmetology theory and practical examinations. Follow the current DOPL examination page and testing-vendor instructions for registration, identification, scheduling and retakes.

4

Prepare your application information

Use your full legal name consistently and prepare the education or apprenticeship documentation, examination information, identity information and any supporting documents required by your answers to DOPL’s qualifying questions.

5

Apply through Utah DOPL

Use DOPL’s current cosmetology application route and pay the current application processing fee. Do not send payment to a private licensing website.

6

Verify issuance before working

After approval, search the Utah DOPL Licensee Lookup & Verification System and confirm that the correct credential appears with the expected status. School completion, an exam score or an application receipt is not the same as an issued active license.

Utah Cosmetology School Route: 1,250 Hours

The current statutory school route requires at least 1,250 hours of instruction or the equivalent number of credit hours through a licensed or recognized school.

The curriculum must cover the areas Utah assigns to the Cosmetology license, including barbering, haircutting, chemical hair services, manual hair removal, qualifying eyelash and eyebrow technology, basic esthetics and nail technology.

Before paying tuition: confirm that the school and exact program qualify for Utah licensure under the current 2026 structure. Accreditation, a beauty-school certificate or a program with the word “cosmetology” in its name does not by itself prove DOPL eligibility.

What if your prior school program was shorter?

Current Utah law allows an applicant who graduated from a recognized school with fewer than 1,250 hours to count qualifying hours practiced as a cosmetologist in another jurisdiction toward the 1,250-hour total. DOPL determines whether the evidence satisfies Utah requirements.

Utah Cosmetology Apprenticeship: 1,250 Hours

Utah’s current apprenticeship law provides a 1,250-hour apprenticeship route for the Cosmetology license. The apprentice must register with DOPL before beginning the qualifying training.

Registration comes first

The registration identifies the licensed instructor who will supervise the apprenticeship. Hours worked before the approved route begins should not automatically be assumed to qualify.

Complete it within two years

Current Utah law requires an apprenticeship to be completed within two years after DOPL approves the registration.

Direct supervision

The supervisor must hold the appropriate Utah instructor credential and provide one-on-one direct supervision as required by the apprenticeship statute.

Supervisor changes

If the licensed instructor supervisor changes after registration approval, Utah law requires notification to DOPL within 30 days.

Old apprenticeship figures: the former Cosmetologist/Barber apprenticeship required 2,500 hours. That number remains relevant to certain legacy transition applicants who registered under the old structure before January 1, 2026, but it is not the ordinary hour total for a new 2026 Cosmetology apprentice.

Utah Cosmetology Theory and Practical Exams

DOPL’s current licensing information requires examination completion for the cosmetology route. Utah’s rule framework uses cosmetology theory and practical examinations for the applicable license.

Theory

Knowledge examination

Prepare for technical subjects such as safety, infection control, hair, skin and nail services and other material in the current candidate information supplied for the Utah exam.

Practical

Performance examination

Follow the current testing instructions carefully for supplies, candidate identification, permitted materials, arrival time and the procedures evaluated during the practical examination.

Fee warning: exam-vendor prices can change separately from the $60 DOPL license application fee. Check the live scheduling system before paying instead of relying on an older candidate bulletin.

Documents and Information to Prepare

Item Why it may be needed Common problem to avoid
Full legal name DOPL application and license record Using a nickname that does not match education or exam records
Government identification Identity and lawful-presence requirements where applicable Expired identification or inconsistent names
School documentation Shows completion of the qualifying curriculum Sending an unofficial record when DOPL requires official documentation
Apprenticeship record Documents approved registration and qualifying hours Counting hours before registration approval
Exam results Confirms required examinations were passed Name or identification mismatch between exam and application
Prior-license verification Needed for endorsement or experience-based review Uploading a wallet card when official verification is required
Qualifying-question documents Supports disclosures involving prior events or discipline Answering “yes” without the requested explanation or records

DOPL’s application materials state that incomplete applications can delay processing and may be denied. Read the current application checklist before submitting.

Utah Cosmetology License Fees

Utah’s current DOPL fee schedule lists a $60 application fee for the Cosmetology license and a $52 renewal fee. Testing charges are separate.

Cost Current amount What it covers
Cosmetology license application $60 DOPL application processing
Cosmetology renewal $52 Regular renewal transaction
Cosmetology apprentice registration $20 Current DOPL apprentice transaction
Examinations Separate vendor fee Theory/practical testing as applicable
Reinstatement Varies by status Additional fees may apply after expiration
Before paying: check the amount displayed by the current official transaction. Application, apprentice registration, examinations, renewal and reinstatement are different charges.

Moving an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Utah

Utah uses a licensure-by-endorsement process for qualifying applicants who already hold an equivalent license from another U.S. jurisdiction. This is not an automatic license transfer.

1

Identify your existing license

Determine the exact credential name, issuing jurisdiction, status, education requirement, examinations and legal scope of practice.

2

Check Utah equivalency

DOPL compares the other jurisdiction’s credential with the Utah license. Older endorsement charts may use the legacy Cosmetologist/Barber terminology, so use current DOPL instructions before ordering records.

3

Request official verification

DOPL’s application guidance requires official license verification for endorsement. A screenshot, wall certificate or beauty-supply account is not a substitute.

4

Document experience if needed

When another jurisdiction’s education falls short of Utah’s standard, qualifying licensed practice may help document required equivalency under the applicable Utah pathway.

5

Wait for Utah issuance

An active license in another state does not by itself authorize cosmetology practice in Utah. Confirm the Utah credential in DOPL’s public lookup before working.

Applicants Trained Outside the United States

Cosmetology is listed by DOPL as a profession with a pathway for internationally trained applicants. If your education was completed outside the United States and you do not qualify through another licensing route, DOPL may require an approved credential evaluation and other documentation.

Do not convert your own hours

Foreign school hours, credits and curriculum should be evaluated through the process DOPL accepts. A private calculation of clock hours or a translated diploma alone may not establish Utah equivalency.

Utah Cosmetology License Lookup

Utah provides a public Licensee Lookup & Verification System. Use it to confirm a cosmetologist, legacy Cosmetologist/Barber, apprentice, instructor, school or another regulated cosmetology credential.

1

Open the Utah verification system

The public search is separate from an applicant’s or license holder’s account.

2

Search by name or license number

The state lookup supports searching by name and profession or by license number.

3

Choose the correct cosmetology credential

Utah’s database includes both current and legacy categories. Check whether the record says Cosmetologist, Cosmetologist/Barber, Barber, Master Esthetician, Nail Technician or another credential.

4

Check the complete record

Confirm the name, license class, number, current status and expiration information before relying on a printed license or social-media profile.

Utah Cosmetology License Renewal

Utah cosmetology credentials generally operate on the DOPL two-year renewal cycle. DOPL’s cosmetology renewal page states that covered licenses expire September 30 of odd-numbered years.

Next standard date Sept. 30, 2027
Renewal cycle 2 years
Cosmetology fee $52
Notice timing About 60 days

DOPL says it sends a renewal notice before expiration using the licensee’s address of record. The license holder remains responsible for maintaining current contact information and completing renewal even if a notice is missed.

Safe renewal sequence

1

Verify the existing license

Confirm the exact credential, number, status and expiration date in Utah’s public database.

2

Update your contact information

Make sure DOPL has the correct mailing and email information before the renewal period.

3

Use the official renewal transaction

Do not submit a first-license application if your existing credential is eligible for ordinary renewal.

4

Save the confirmation and verify status

After payment, keep the confirmation and recheck the public record to make sure the updated expiration and status were actually issued.

What If Your Utah Cosmetology License Expired?

Do not treat an expired license as active merely because you previously held it or have submitted a payment. Utah law states that a license expires on the expiration date shown unless properly renewed.

Stop using an ordinary renewal assumption

If the license has already expired, check whether DOPL requires reinstatement, reapplication, additional fees or other status-specific requirements.

Verify the restored status

After DOPL completes the transaction, confirm the credential in the public verification system before relying on it as current authority to practice.

Utah Requires the License to Be Displayed

Utah DOPL reminds cosmetology professionals that a license issued under Chapter 58-11a must be prominently displayed at the location where the license holder performs the practice covered by that license.

Practical reminder: after DOPL issues or renews your license, print the current credential and display it as required. Do not leave only an old expired copy on the wall.

Common Utah Application Problems

Problem Possible reason What to do
You find 1,600 hours online The source is describing the legacy Cosmetologist/Barber route Use the current 1,250-hour Cosmetology requirement unless you are a qualifying transition applicant
DOPL cannot match your exam Name or identifying information may differ Compare your legal name on the application, government ID, school and exam records
Application is incomplete Education, verification or disclosure documentation is missing Review every DOPL checklist item before creating another application
Out-of-state license is not accepted automatically The prior license may not be equivalent Provide official verification and ask DOPL how education and experience can be evaluated
License search shows an older title The professional may hold a valid legacy credential Read the actual status and expiration rather than judging only by the credential name
Renewal payment was made but status did not change The transaction may still require processing or review Keep the receipt, check account messages and contact DOPL if the public record remains incorrect

Utah Cosmetology License FAQs

How many hours do you need for a Utah cosmetology license in 2026?

The current Utah Cosmetology license requires at least 1,250 hours through a licensed or recognized school, or an approved 1,250-hour cosmetologist apprenticeship.

Why do some websites say Utah requires 1,600 cosmetology hours?

Utah previously used a Cosmetologist/Barber license with a 1,600-hour school route. Beginning in 2026, Utah introduced a new Cosmetology license with a 1,250-hour requirement. The older figure can still apply to certain legacy transition applicants who began training before the statutory cutoff.

How much is a Utah cosmetology license application?

The current DOPL fee schedule lists a $60 Cosmetology license application fee. Examination and other transaction fees are separate.

How much does it cost to renew a Utah cosmetology license?

DOPL currently lists a $52 renewal fee for the applicable cosmetology credential. Verify the amount shown in the official renewal transaction before paying.

When does a Utah cosmetology license expire?

DOPL’s cosmetology renewal guidance states that covered licenses expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next standard odd-year expiration after 2026 is September 30, 2027, but always verify the date shown on your own credential.

Can I become a Utah cosmetologist through an apprenticeship?

Yes. The current law provides a 1,250-hour approved cosmetologist apprenticeship. You must register the apprenticeship with DOPL before beginning qualifying training, follow supervision rules and complete the program within the required timeframe.

Can I transfer my cosmetology license from another state to Utah?

Utah may issue a license by endorsement to a qualifying applicant with an equivalent out-of-state credential. DOPL reviews the prior license, status and qualifications. It is not an automatic transfer.

Where can I verify a Utah cosmetology license?

Use Utah DOPL’s public Licensee Lookup & Verification System. You can search by name and profession or by license number.

Does passing cosmetology school mean I can start working?

No. Education is only one part of licensure. You must complete the applicable examinations and licensing requirements and receive the appropriate Utah credential before relying on it as authority to practice.

What is the Utah DOPL phone number for cosmetology licensing?

The Utah Division of Professional Licensing lists 801-530-6628 as its main licensing phone number and 866-275-3675 as its toll-free number within Utah.

Your Best Next Step

If you are beginning cosmetology training in Utah now, confirm that your school or apprenticeship is approved for the current 1,250-hour Cosmetology license before spending money or accumulating hours. If you already hold an older Utah credential, verify its current DOPL status before assuming that the new-license rules replace your existing license.
