Oklahoma Cosmetology License: Requirements, Hours, Exams & Application

To become a licensed cosmetologist in Oklahoma, most school-route applicants complete 1,500 hours of approved cosmetology education, qualify for the licensing examination, pass the required written and practical exams with at least 75%, and complete the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering licensing process.

Oklahoma also allows an approved apprenticeship route. That route uses a substantially higher training requirement, so applicants should decide which path applies before registering hours or paying examination fees.

Oklahoma Cosmetology License 2026: Quick Answer

The Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering, commonly shortened to OSBCB, licenses cosmetologists and regulates cosmetology schools and establishments. The standard school route requires 1,500 training hours. The Board’s current cosmetology examination page requires applicants to pass the written and practical examinations with a minimum score of 75%.

School Route 1,500 hours
Exam Registration $50
Passing Score 75%
Current License Term 2 years
Important 2026 update: Oklahoma moved individual practitioner licenses to a two-year structure effective November 1, 2025. Current Board rules list the cosmetology license at $80 biennially. Some older OSBCB discipline pages still display one-year and $40 language, so use the current rulebook and live licensing process when older government pages conflict.

Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent information website. It is not the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering and cannot issue, renew, approve or reinstate an Oklahoma license.

Oklahoma Cosmetology License Requirements

Oklahoma provides more than one route into cosmetology. A person may qualify through an approved Oklahoma school, an approved apprenticeship program, or qualifying education and training completed in another state or country.

Licensed School Route

This is the standard route for many first-time Oklahoma applicants.

  • Register as a student as required by OSBCB.
  • Complete an approved cosmetology curriculum.
  • Complete 1,500 hours or the approved credit-hour equivalent.
  • Meet the examination eligibility rules.
  • Register for the required exams.
  • Pass the written and practical examinations.
  • Complete the individual licensing process.

Apprenticeship Route

Oklahoma also recognizes approved apprenticeship training conducted under qualified supervision in an approved licensed establishment.

  • Obtain approval for the apprenticeship route before relying on work hours.
  • Train under a licensed instructor or qualified master cosmetology/barber professional as required.
  • Use an approved licensed establishment.
  • Complete the Board’s applicable apprenticeship training requirement.
  • Complete examination and licensing requirements afterward.
Do not work backward from an exam date. Make sure your school registration, training hours, completion records and Board eligibility are in order before paying for an examination or assuming you qualify for a license.

How Many Hours Are Required for an Oklahoma Cosmetology License?

The current OSBCB cosmetology examination guidance lists 1,500 hours of study, or the equivalent number of approved credit hours, for the standard cosmetology route.

These hours should come from an Oklahoma-licensed cosmetology school unless you are using an approved alternative such as apprenticeship, transferred training, reciprocity or another Board-recognized route.

Do All Beauty Licenses Use 1,500 Hours?

No. Cosmetology is only one Oklahoma credential. Esthetics/facialist, manicuring/nail technology, barbering, instructor credentials, eyelash extensions, threading, makeup and other regulated categories can use different requirements.

Use the credential that matches the services you intend to provide. Completing training for a narrower specialty does not automatically create a full cosmetology license.

School Hours Must Be Properly Recorded

Oklahoma’s forms library includes student registration, monthly hours reporting, withdrawal, release, incoming-hours transfer and affidavit-of-completion forms. If your hours are missing or incorrect, address the school record before assuming the Board will credit them automatically.

Oklahoma Cosmetology Apprenticeship Route

OSBCB publishes an apprenticeship route for applicants who train under supervision rather than completing the ordinary school program. Its current licensing guidance lists 2,250 hours of apprenticeship study for cosmetology.

Supervision Matters

An apprentice must train under the type of licensed professional specified by Oklahoma and within an approved licensed establishment. Ordinary salon employment should not be assumed to count as apprenticeship credit.

Register Before Counting Hours

Start with OSBCB’s apprenticeship instructions and forms. Hours completed outside the approved structure may not receive the same treatment as properly registered apprenticeship hours.

The forms library lists Form 111, Apprentice Program General Information, and Form 112, Apprentice Application. Review the current versions before beginning the program.

Oklahoma Age and Education Requirements

Two different stages are easy to confuse: entering cosmetology training and becoming eligible for the Board-issued licensing examination.

Stage Current Oklahoma Rule Why It Matters
School/student eligibility Generally requires at least an eighth-grade education and age 16, subject to the specific school-student exception in state law. This controls when a student may enter covered training.
Board-issued licensing examination State law says a person is not eligible unless the person is at least 17 years old or is a high school graduate. A person can potentially begin training before meeting the final examination-age rule.
Why older summaries can look different: some OSBCB exam pages still describe age 16 and eighth-grade education, while the Board’s current homepage highlights the later statutory examination rule of age 17 or high school graduation. For licensing eligibility, follow the current statute and Board instructions that apply when you are approved to test.

How to Get an Oklahoma Cosmetology License

Choose the correct licensing route. Decide whether you are applying through an Oklahoma school, apprenticeship, transferred training or reciprocity. The forms and evidence differ by route.
Register your training correctly. Use an OSBCB-licensed school or obtain approval for an apprenticeship. Make sure student or apprentice registration is completed before relying on accumulated hours.
Complete the required training. The standard Oklahoma cosmetology school route requires 1,500 hours. The Board’s published apprenticeship guidance lists 2,250 hours for cosmetology apprenticeship.
Make sure your completion record reaches OSBCB. Schools and applicants use Board forms to document training completion. Resolve missing hours or school-record discrepancies before examination.
Register for the licensing examinations. OSBCB’s forms library includes Form 201 for examination registration. The current exam-registration fee is $50.
Take the required exams. For standard cosmetology licensing, Oklahoma requires written and practical testing and lists a minimum passing score of 75%.
Complete the individual license application. The Board’s current forms library lists Form 301, Individual License Application. Follow the version currently published by OSBCB.
Verify the issued license before practicing. Use the Board’s official public verification system and confirm the credential is active. Oklahoma requires regulated work to be performed under a valid credential and in a licensed establishment or under a valid work permit where applicable.

Forms and Documents You May Need

The exact package depends on whether you are a first-time Oklahoma student, apprentice, examination applicant, reciprocity applicant or person with prior training.

Form or Record When It May Apply

Monthly Hours Report School reporting of student training hours.
Incoming Hours Transfer When qualifying prior training hours need review.
Affidavit of Completion Documenting completion before examination/licensure processing.
Exam Registration Application Registering for the applicable license examinations.

Affidavit Verifying Lawful Presence When required as part of the state licensing documentation.
Certification of Records Often relevant to reciprocity, transfer or official proof of another credential.

Privacy reminder: licensing forms may request personal identifying information. Download forms from Oklahoma’s official government website and send sensitive data only by the submission method directed by OSBCB.

Oklahoma Cosmetology Written and Practical Exams

For the standard cosmetology route, OSBCB currently lists both a written and practical examination and requires a minimum score of 75%.

NIC Theory Examination

OSBCB identifies Prov as Oklahoma’s provider of the NIC theory examination for cosmetology and several other professions.

Use the current OSBCB exam page to reach the correct candidate and testing information rather than buying an exam from an unrelated testing site.

Practical Examination

Oklahoma’s cosmetology practical exam uses mannequin equipment rather than live models. The Board publishes a detailed supply list for required practical tasks.

Read the current supply list shortly before testing because equipment and procedure instructions can change.

Current Examination Fee

The current rulebook lists an $50 examination-registration fee. A failed or missed examination can require another registration or additional action, so confirm eligibility and current instructions before paying.

Oklahoma Cosmetology License Fees in 2026

Oklahoma’s fee structure changed with the move to two-year practitioner licensing. The current rulebook effective December 1, 2025 lists the following amounts.

Transaction Current Amount Important Detail
Student/apprentice registration $10 Registration fee under the current rule schedule.
Examination registration $50 Applies to licensing examination registration.
Cosmetology license $80 biennially Current two-year practitioner fee.
Duplicate license $10 For loss or destruction of the original license.
Certification of records $10 Formal certification, often used for interstate licensing matters.
Reciprocity license $90 Current rulebook lists an initial biennial reciprocity-license fee.
Reciprocity processing $90 Separate current reciprocity processing fee.
Reciprocity planning: OSBCB’s current homepage summarizes reciprocity as $180 plus a $5 rulebook. Do not use an old reciprocity PDF’s historic fee total when the current rule schedule has changed.

Verify an Oklahoma Cosmetology License

Before relying on a wall certificate, social profile or screenshot, check the current OSBCB public record. The Board’s license page provides a Licensee Search route for public verification.

What to Confirm

  • The person’s name matches the practitioner you are checking.
  • The credential is actually cosmetology rather than a different beauty license.
  • The license status is current.
  • The expiration date is appropriate for the current two-year cycle.
  • The practitioner and establishment are separately licensed when both credentials are required.
For employers and salon owners: a valid individual license does not replace the establishment’s own licensing obligations. Oklahoma states that covered services must be performed by a validly licensed individual working in a licensed establishment or under a valid work permit as applicable.

Oklahoma Cosmetology License Renewal

Current practitioner licenses use a two-year term. The expiration date is the last day of the licensee’s birth month in the applicable expiration year. The standard cosmetology renewal fee is currently $80 biennially.

OSBCB replaced its previous renewal website with a new self-service portal in November 2024. Existing licensees who have never registered in the replacement system must first complete the current registration process before using the Licensee Portal.

Standard Renewal

$80 for the current two-year cosmetologist cycle.

Deadline

Last day of the licensee’s birth month in the applicable renewal year.

Late Penalty

The current rules add $10 after the license has been expired for more than two months.

A license becomes void after expiration. Do not treat a late-renewal period as automatic permission to continue practicing on an expired credential.

See the Oklahoma Cosmetology License Renewal 2026 guide .

Moving to Oklahoma With an Out-of-State Cosmetology License

Do not apply as a brand-new Oklahoma school graduate if you already hold a license from another jurisdiction. OSBCB maintains domestic and foreign reciprocity processes for applicants whose education and licensing history were completed elsewhere.

Request official licensing records. The domestic reciprocity process relies on certification from the state board or licensing agency where you hold or held the credential. A photocopy of a wall license is not the same as certified licensing history.
Use the correct reciprocity application. OSBCB lists separate forms for domestic reciprocity, foreign reciprocity and reciprocity examination situations.
Complete lawful-presence documentation when applicable. Follow the current form package rather than reusing an old application saved from another applicant.
Determine whether Oklahoma testing applies. Some applicants qualify through reciprocity, while others may have to complete Oklahoma examination requirements depending on their license status, training and jurisdictional history.
Pay the current fee, not an outdated PDF amount. The current Board homepage states a reciprocity total of $180 plus the $5 rulebook charge.

Reciprocity Help

OSBCB currently lists its reciprocity specialist for transfer of out-of-state hours, certification of hours and reciprocity matters at 405-522-7619.

Applying With a Criminal History

A criminal record should not be handled by guessing whether a cosmetology license will automatically be granted or denied. OSBCB publishes a specific criminal-history section and an Initial Determination process.

The current forms library includes a disqualifying-crimes list and a Request for Initial Determination for applicants seeking guidance before or during the licensing process.

Use the Board’s determination process for your own facts. A general website cannot determine whether a particular conviction, disposition, sentence or rehabilitation history satisfies Oklahoma’s licensing law.

Open the official forms and Initial Determination resources .

After Oklahoma Issues Your Cosmetology License

Receiving the credential is not the end of compliance. OSBCB states that cosmetology, barbering, facial and nail services covered by Oklahoma law may only be performed by people with valid credentials who work in a licensed establishment or hold an applicable valid work permit.

Post the License

OSBCB says licenses and work permits must be posted in public view with a current photograph attached.

Check the Establishment

Oklahoma cosmetology and barber establishments are subject to inspection. The Board states that the most current salon inspection sheet must be posted in public view.

Know Your Scope of Practice

A cosmetology license has a defined legal scope. It should not be treated as authority to perform procedures reserved to another health or professional license. If you are adding a new service, verify that the service falls within your Oklahoma credential before advertising or charging for it.

How to File an Oklahoma Cosmetology Complaint

OSBCB publishes Form 601, Complaint Form. The current form says an investigation will be made only after receipt of a signed, notarized complaint.

Prepare the Complaint Before Submission

  • Your name and contact information.
  • The name of the practitioner, school or shop involved.
  • The establishment name and address when applicable.
  • A clear description of the events.
  • Supporting pages or evidence when needed.
  • Your signature and required notarization.

The current complaint form directs completed complaints to mary.casebolt@cosmo.ok.gov. Because complaint procedures and staff assignments can change, open the current form from the OSBCB forms library before sending sensitive material.
