Missouri Cosmetology License 2026: Requirements, Hours, MOPRO & Exam

Missouri Licensing Guide • 2026

How to Get a Missouri Cosmetology License

To qualify for a standard Missouri cosmetology license, an applicant must generally be at least 17, have education equivalent to completing the 10th grade, complete the required Board-recognized training, obtain Missouri approval and pass the required written and practical examinations.

The standard private-school cosmetologist route requires 1,500 training hours. Missouri also recognizes a 1,220-hour public vocational-technical route and a 3,000-hour apprenticeship route.

Missouri Cosmetology License Requirements at a Glance

Missouri’s Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners regulates cosmetology licensing. For the standard cosmetologist route, the key requirements are age 17 or older, education equivalent to completing the 10th grade, approved training and successful completion of Missouri’s required examinations.

Minimum age 17
Private school 1,500 hrs
Public vo-tech 1,220 hrs
Apprenticeship 3,000 hrs
Exam provider Prov
Missouri approval comes before exam scheduling. Register or apply with the Missouri licensing system first. Prov administers the exams, but Prov does not decide whether you meet Missouri’s licensing requirements.

Who Issues Missouri Cosmetology Licenses?

The official licensing authority is the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, part of the Missouri Division of Professional Registration.

The Board determines licensing eligibility, oversees schools and apprenticeships, handles applications and reciprocity, regulates establishments and issues professional credentials. Missouri currently uses MOPRO for licensing-account functions and Prov, Inc. for the required licensing examinations.

Three systems, three different jobs: COSBAR is the licensing Board, MOPRO is Missouri’s licensing portal, and Prov is the examination provider. Passing a Prov test by itself does not create an active Missouri license.

Basic Eligibility for a Missouri Cosmetology License

Missouri Revised Statutes section 329.050 sets the core qualifications for cosmetology examination or licensure applicants.

Age

At least 17 years old

An applicant must be at least 17 years of age.

Education

10th-grade equivalent

The applicant must have education equivalent to successful completion of the 10th grade.

Training

Complete the correct program

The training requirement depends on the credential and whether the applicant uses a school or apprenticeship route.

The applicant must also pass the examinations required by the Board before a regular operator license can be issued.

Missouri Cosmetology License Classes

Missouri uses license classifications rather than treating every beauty profession as one generic cosmetology credential. Confirm your intended scope before enrolling in a program or registering for an exam.

Missouri classification Common description Training route
Class CA Hairdressing and manicuring / standard cosmetology route Cosmetology school, public vo-tech or apprenticeship
Class CH Hairdresser Confirm the exact Board-approved program and examination path
Class E Esthetician Esthetics school or apprenticeship
Class MO Manicurist Manicuring school or apprenticeship
Instructor Cosmetology instructor Separate instructor requirements and examinations apply
Crossover Combined barber/cosmetology authority Separate crossover rules apply
Do not register for an exam based only on a nickname such as “cosmetologist” or “nail tech.” Use the Missouri credential classification that matches the work you intend to perform.

Missouri Cosmetology Training Hours

For the standard cosmetologist route, Missouri law currently requires at least 1,500 hours in a licensed cosmetology school. A qualifying public vocational-technical cosmetology program may use the separate 1,220-hour route.

Credential School route Apprenticeship route
Cosmetologist 1,500 hours in a licensed school 3,000 hours
Public vocational/technical cosmetology 1,220 hours Not the standard school route
Esthetician 750 hours 1,500 hours
Manicurist 400 hours 800 hours

Missouri does not allow a student to mix school training and apprenticeship hours simply to reach the examination minimum. Board rules treat the two training routes separately.

Check the school before paying tuition. Verify that the school and the exact program are recognized for the Missouri credential you want. A beauty course that teaches cosmetology skills does not automatically create Board-approved licensing hours.

Missouri Cosmetology Apprenticeship Route

Applicants who prefer workplace training may use a Board-regulated apprenticeship instead of the standard school route when the applicable requirements are met.

Find an approved training establishment and supervisor

The apprenticeship must operate through the Board’s regulated apprenticeship system rather than an informal salon arrangement.

Submit the apprentice enrollment before training begins

The establishment must submit the required apprentice enrollment to the Board. Missouri rules say training cannot receive credit until the registration is properly approved.

Wait for the apprentice license

The apprentice license and supervisor documentation must be received and properly posted before credited apprenticeship training begins.

Complete the full training requirement

The standard cosmetology apprenticeship requires 3,000 hours. Esthetics requires 1,500 apprenticeship hours and manicuring requires 800.

Apply for examination after training is complete

The Board must have the completed training records and approve examination eligibility before the applicant proceeds to testing.

Open the official Missouri COSBAR forms page for current apprentice forms and timesheets.

How to Apply for a Missouri Cosmetology License

The exact screen sequence can change as Missouri updates MOPRO, but the licensing order is important. Do not start by purchasing a Prov exam before Missouri confirms the examination eligibility attached to your credential.

Choose the correct Missouri license classification

Determine whether you need Class CA cosmetology, Class CH hairdresser, Class E esthetician, Class MO manicurist, an instructor credential or another classification.

Complete the required Board-recognized training

Finish the required school or apprenticeship hours. Your training records must support the credential for which you apply.

Register or apply through Missouri

MOPRO is Missouri’s current licensing system. Use the correct first-time-license path and keep the same legal identity information throughout the application and testing process.

Submit required application information

Provide the information and documentation Missouri requires for your route. Applicants using out-of-state training have additional affidavit and documentation requirements.

Wait for Board eligibility review

The Board reviews the training and application. Prov does not make this licensing decision.

Use the Board-approved exam authorization

After approval, follow the current Prov registration instructions and use the Candidate ID or voucher information supplied for the approved examinations.

Pass the written and practical examinations

Standard Missouri operator licensing requires the applicable written and practical examinations. The current passing score is 75 for each required portion.

Complete final licensing requirements and verify status

Passing the exam does not by itself prove an active license has been issued. Complete Missouri’s final licensing steps and check the official public record before working independently.

Documents to Prepare for a Missouri Cosmetology Application

The exact checklist depends on whether you trained in Missouri, another state, through an apprenticeship or under another licensing route. Use the current application generated by Missouri for your situation.

Missouri-trained applicants

  • Legal identifying information used in the licensing record
  • Proof that required training was completed
  • Student or apprentice records when applicable
  • Current application information requested by MOPRO or COSBAR
  • Exam-registration information after Board approval

Out-of-state training applicants

The current Examination/Temporary Permit application checklist includes additional items such as the appropriate Missouri training affidavit, certification from the other state board, proof of age, education documentation when applicable, two passport-style photographs and completion of the state-law test.

Paper-form rule: COSBAR states that paper applications requiring a fee and/or notarization must be mailed. Those applications cannot be submitted by email or fax.

Missouri Cosmetology Exam: Written and Practical Tests

Prov, Inc. currently administers Missouri’s NIC cosmetology and barbering examinations. For standard operator categories, candidates must pass both the applicable written examination and practical examination.

Written exam

$90 per attempt

The current Prov bulletin lists each written examination at $90.

Practical exam

$60 per attempt

The current Prov bulletin lists each practical examination at $60.

Passing score

75

Missouri’s operator rule requires a score of at least 75 on the written and 75 on the practical examination.

Do not schedule the wrong exam

Prov administers several Missouri license categories, including Class CA, Class CH, Class E, Class MO and instructor examinations. Prov specifically states that it does not determine which examination a candidate must take.

If your Board approval, Candidate ID or license classification does not match what you expected, resolve that issue with the Board before paying for a test.

Open the current Missouri Prov exam page.

Missouri Temporary Cosmetology Permit

An applicant who has been approved to take the state examination may apply for a temporary permit for the specific cosmetology classification involved.

A temporary permit is not unrestricted practice authority. Missouri’s rule requires the permit holder to work under the supervision of a person currently licensed in the same cosmetology classification.

The current Board examination application states that temporary permits are issued after the examinations are scheduled.

If the permit holder fails an examination or fails to appear for a scheduled examination, the temporary permit terminates. Missouri rules also state that another temporary permit is not issued to the same individual under this route.

What Happens If You Fail the Missouri Cosmetology Exam?

A failed examination does not mean you must repeat your entire cosmetology program immediately. The next step depends on the portion failed and the number of attempts.

Retaking an exam

Follow the current Prov and Board reexamination process and pay the applicable testing fee for the portion that must be repeated.

Three failures

Missouri’s cosmetology examination rule requires additional training after a person fails a portion of the examination three times. The additional training is at least 40 hours in each failed subject, with a maximum of 160 hours total.

The extra training must be certified by a Missouri Board-licensed cosmetology school before the applicant continues through the applicable reexamination process.

After You Pass the Missouri Cosmetology Exam

A passing score is an important licensing milestone, but it is not the same thing as seeing an active Missouri operator license in the official public record.

Keep your official exam results

Prov currently states that official results are emailed after testing. Keep those records with your licensing documents.

Follow Missouri’s final licensing instructions

Complete any remaining licensing action or documentation shown by the Board or MOPRO.

Check the public license record

Verify your legal name, credential classification, license number, status and expiration in Missouri’s official search.

Verify the establishment too

If you will work from a salon, suite, booth or other regulated establishment, remember that your personal operator license does not automatically license the business location.

Search the official MOPRO license record.

Already Licensed in Another State? Check Missouri Reciprocity

An applicant with a current cosmetology license from another U.S. jurisdiction may qualify for Missouri licensure through reciprocity instead of repeating the standard Missouri school route.

Missouri’s current reciprocity form requires evidence of current licensure and other supporting documents. The licensing authority in the other state must provide the required verification directly to Missouri.

Current reciprocity fee

The Board’s current reciprocity application lists a $100 fee for operators and instructors.

State-law test

The current application requires completion of Missouri’s online state-law test with a passing score of 75%.

The application also calls for Board-to-Board license verification and other supporting documentation. Do not cancel an existing out-of-state credential until you understand what Missouri requires for your specific case.

Missouri Cosmetology License Costs to Plan For

There is no single universal total because your cost depends on training, credential class, examination attempts and whether you are applying by examination or reciprocity.

Cost Current amount Important detail
Prov written examination $90 Per written examination attempt
Prov practical examination $60 Per practical examination attempt
Out-of-state reciprocity $100 Current Board reciprocity application amount for operators/instructors
Standard operator renewal $60 Future renewal after the initial license is issued
School tuition and kit Varies Private training costs are separate from Board and Prov charges
Do not calculate your budget from old Missouri fee pages. Board fees and testing-vendor fees can change independently. Verify the amount shown in the current Board form, MOPRO transaction or Prov checkout before paying.

MOPRO Application Problems and What to Do

Cannot access MOPRO account Email or identity information may not match Missouri’s record. Contact MOPRO technical support.
License is not visible after passing Exam completion and license issuance are separate steps. Check MOPRO and contact COSBAR about any remaining licensing requirement.
