The current R.S. 37:599 lists $35 for annual renewal of a cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, teacher/instructor or manager. The current amount comes from the 2025 statutory amendment effective June 20, 2025.

Louisiana Cosmetology Renewal Is Due on Your Birthday

Louisiana R.S. 37:590 separates individual practitioners from several business-side credentials. A registered cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist or teacher who continues actively practicing renews the personal certificate on or before that person’s birthday.

Normal renewal deadline

Your birthday is the ordinary annual renewal date for an actively practicing cosmetologist.

Statutory expiration point

If the personal certificate remains unrenewed, Louisiana law says it expires 30 days following the birthday.

Do not treat the extra 30 days as the normal deadline. The statute directs the actively practicing licensee to renew on or before the birthday. The separate 30-day provision identifies when the unrenewed certificate expires.

Example

If your birthday is October 10, your normal annual renewal date is October 10. If the certificate remains unrenewed, the statutory expiration point is 30 days later.

Select your birth month and day to see the planning route.

Planning only. Your current LSBC record and Louisiana law control. For a February 29 birthday in a non-leap year, confirm the applicable date directly with LSBC rather than assuming February 28 or March 1.

Before You Renew: Check the Exact Credential

Louisiana issues several personal, instructor, business and permit credentials. A cosmetology renewal payment does not automatically renew every credential connected with a salon or licensee.

  • Find the exact certificate or permit number.
  • Confirm whether the record is a cosmetologist, instructor, manager, salon, booth rental permit, school or another credential.
  • Check the correct renewal deadline for that credential.
  • Confirm whether the certificate is still eligible for normal renewal or has already expired.
  • Review your legal name and contact information.
  • If you teach, confirm whether instructor continuing education applies.
  • If you work as a booth renter, check the booth permit separately from your personal cosmetologist certificate.

How to Renew a Louisiana Cosmetology License Online

Confirm that normal renewal still applies

Check your birthday, credential type and current status. If the certificate has already expired, do not assume the ordinary $35 transaction is the correct route.

Start at the official Louisiana Board website

Go to the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology website and use its published Pay License Renewal Online option rather than starting from an unrelated payment site.

Identify the correct credential

Enter the requested information and make sure the person, certificate number and credential type shown by the renewal system match the record you intend to renew.

Review the amount before paying

A timely ordinary cosmetologist renewal is currently $35 under Louisiana law. A different amount can indicate another credential, restoration, a business-side transaction or another charge.

Submit the payment once

Allow the transaction to finish before clicking again. If the page pauses or freezes, check for a receipt or card transaction before making another payment.

Save the confirmation

Keep the payment date, amount, credential number, receipt and transaction reference.

Verify that the renewal was applied

Confirm that the intended credential reflects the renewed term. If you also hold a salon, booth, manager or instructor credential, check those records separately.

Louisiana Cosmetology Renewal Fees for 2026

The current statutory fees below come from Louisiana R.S. 37:599. Check the live Board transaction before paying in case a separate service or processing charge is disclosed.

Credential or service Current statutory fee What the fee applies to
Cosmetologist $35 Initial certificate and annual renewal.
Esthetician $35 Initial certificate and annual renewal.
Manicurist $35 Initial certificate and annual renewal.
Teacher / instructor $35 Certificate renewal; instructor CE requirements apply separately.
Manager $35 Business-side credential with a different renewal schedule.
Beauty shop / salon $55 Initial certificate and annual renewal.
Mobile salon $55 Initial certificate and annual renewal.
Home care $55 Current R.S. 37:599 fee category.
Booth rental permit $50 Separate permit from the practitioner’s personal license.
Duplicate license $25 Replacement credential; not a renewal.
Official certification of records $15 Formal certification of Board records.
School renewal $190 Annual school certificate renewal.
School failure to timely renew $175 Separate statutory school late charge.

Read current Louisiana R.S. 37:599 fee law.

Expired Louisiana Cosmetology License: Restoration Within Three Years

Once a covered certificate has expired, ordinary timely renewal and restoration are not the same transaction.

Within three years

R.S. 37:599 says restoration of a certificate listed in its Paragraph (2) is assessed at twice the applicable fee for each year the certificate was expired.

$300 statutory maximum

The same personal/business restoration provision states that the assessment may not exceed $300.

Do not self-calculate an uncertain partial year. The statute refers to twice the applicable fee for each year the certificate was expired. If the amount is not clearly calculated by the Board system, ask LSBC for the exact restoration amount for your credential and expiration date.
  • Confirm the exact credential type.
  • Confirm the expiration date.
  • Determine whether the lapse is still within three years.
  • Use the restoration route rather than assuming another $35 payment is enough.
  • Keep the receipt and verify that the certificate returns to the correct status.

More Than Three Years Out of Practice

Louisiana R.S. 37:590 provides a different route for a certificate holder who has retired from authorized practice for more than three years.

Proof of qualification

The law allows the person to resume practice after satisfactory proof of qualification through a short-form examination conducted by the examination team.

Brush-up course

The statute says the renewal may be facilitated by attending a brush-up course conducted by an approved school.

Out-of-state practice can matter. Louisiana law says a Louisiana registrant who maintained a license or registration to practice outside the state is considered to have maintained active practice during the term covered by that outside certificate.

Read Louisiana R.S. 37:590.

Can You Keep Working After the Louisiana License Expires?

Louisiana R.S. 37:581 states that a person may not engage in the practice of cosmetology without a current certificate of registration for the appropriate area of practice.

  • An old license card does not prove current authority.
  • A renewal receipt does not by itself change the official status.
  • A current salon certificate does not replace an expired personal cosmetologist certificate.
  • A current personal certificate does not replace a required salon or booth credential.
Check the official status before returning to work. If your certificate has already expired, complete the Board’s applicable restoration route and confirm that the credential is current.

Read Louisiana R.S. 37:581.

Louisiana Cosmetology Instructor Renewal and Continuing Education

The specific 16-hour continuing-education rule applies to registered teachers/instructors. It should not be presented as a general 16-hour CE requirement for every ordinary cosmetologist.

Ordinary cosmetologist

The teacher-specific 16-hour seminar requirement is not the ordinary cosmetologist renewal rule.

Registered teacher

R.S. 37:583 requires a registered teacher, every two years, to attend a Board-approved continuing-education seminar consisting of at least 16 hours in the discipline the person is certified to teach.

Current administrative rules also state that an instructor seeking active renewal or reinstatement must have completed the required CE within the preceding 24 months. An instructor who has not met the seminar requirement receives inactive status under the rule.

Read Louisiana R.S. 37:583.

Master Instructor Renewal Has a Separate CE Rule

Louisiana’s current administrative rules distinguish a Master Instructor from a regular instructor.

Maintain Master Instructor status

The current rule requires a Master Instructor to attend at least 16 hours of approved continuing education each year.

If the annual requirement is missed

The rule provides for reinstatement of the Master Instructor credential after two consecutive years of completing 16 hours of approved continuing education.

Open Louisiana Administrative Code Title 46, Part XXXI.

Salon, Booth Rental and Manager Renewals Are Separate

Do not apply the personal cosmetologist birthday schedule to every credential. Louisiana law uses a January schedule for several business-side registrations.

Credential Normal renewal timing Current statutory fee
Cosmetologist On or before individual birthday $35
Registered teacher On or before individual birthday $35
Beauty shop / salon On or before January 31 $55
Mobile salon On or before January 31 $55
Booth renter On or before January 31 $50
Manager On or before January 31 $35
Cosmetology school On or before January 31 $190
January 31 credentials: R.S. 37:590 says an untimely renewed beauty shop, mobile salon, booth renter, manager or school certificate expires on March 1 and then requires the applicable restoration route.

Booth renter warning

A booth rental permit is separate from the underlying personal cosmetology certificate. If you operate as a qualifying booth renter, renew and verify both credentials that apply to your work arrangement.

Expired Cosmetology School Certificates Use a Different Formula

Do not automatically apply the $300 personal/business restoration cap to an expired cosmetology school certificate.

Annual school renewal

Current statutory amount: $190.

Failure to timely renew

Current statutory school late charge: $175.

R.S. 37:599 gives schools a separate restoration provision: twice the school renewal fee for each expired year plus the failure-to-timely-renew fee. The separate school paragraph does not state the same $300 cap used by the Paragraph (2) restoration provision.

Online Renewal Payment Problems

Problem Possible explanation What to do
Page freezes after payment The payment may still have reached the processor. Check for a receipt, email or card transaction before paying again.
Amount is higher than $35 The transaction may involve another credential, restoration or another disclosed charge. Read the transaction description and credential before submitting.
Wrong person or license appears The identifying information may not match the intended record. Stop before payment and contact LSBC if you cannot correct the match.
Payment appears twice The form may have been submitted more than once. Do not make another payment. Keep both transaction references and contact the Board.
Payment succeeded but record looks old The administrative record may not yet reflect the transaction or another issue may remain. Keep the receipt and contact LSBC if the expected update does not appear.
Caller demands renewal payment It may be a scam. Do not provide payment information by phone. LSBC warns that it will never request phone payments.
LSBC scam warning: the Board currently warns about people posing as State Board inspectors and states that LSBC will never request payment by phone. Open the official Board site yourself when paying.

After Paying: Verify the Renewal

Save the receipt

Keep the amount, transaction date, certificate number and confirmation reference.

Confirm the correct credential

Make sure the payment was applied to the personal cosmetologist certificate rather than a salon, booth, manager or other record.

Check the new term

Confirm that the certificate information reflects the expected renewed period before relying on the transaction.

Resolve mismatches before paying again

If the record still appears incorrect, contact the Board with the certificate number and transaction details rather than submitting another payment.

Name, Address or Salon Information Changed?

Legal name

Use the Board’s current change procedure and provide the supporting documentation it requires. Do not create a second professional identity merely because your name changed.

Personal contact information

Keep Board contact information current so renewal and licensing communication does not go to an outdated address.

Salon ownership or location

A salon ownership or location change can trigger separate establishment requirements and should not be treated as a simple personal-license renewal.

Yes. The Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology currently publishes a Pay License Renewal Online option. Start from the official LSBC website so you reach the Board’s current payment route.

Is my deadline my birthday or 30 days after my birthday?

Your normal renewal deadline is on or before your birthday. The separate 30-day rule identifies when an unrenewed personal certificate expires.

What happens if my Louisiana cosmetology license expires?

What happens after more than three years away from practice?

R.S. 37:590 provides a short-form examination route to show qualification to resume practice. The law also says an approved brush-up course may facilitate the return. Qualifying out-of-state licensure can affect how active practice is treated.

How much continuing education does a Louisiana cosmetology instructor need?

A registered teacher must attend a Board-approved continuing-education seminar every two years consisting of at least 16 hours in the discipline the person is certified to teach. Current rules also use the preceding 24 months when determining active instructor renewal or reinstatement status.

Does a Louisiana Master Instructor have the same CE rule?

No. Current administrative rules require a Master Instructor to complete at least 16 hours of approved continuing education each year to maintain the master credential.

What is the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology phone number?

LSBC lists 225-756-3404 as its local phone number and 866-257-7901 as its toll-free number. The Board email is lsbc@la.gov.

Does LSBC call licensees to collect renewal payments?

LSBC currently warns about scammers posing as Board inspectors and states that it will never request payment by phone. Use the official Board website for online renewal.

Final Louisiana Renewal Checklist

Identify the exact credential, use your birthday as the ordinary annual deadline for a personal cosmetologist certificate, verify the current $35 fee, start from the official LSBC site, keep the transaction receipt and confirm that the correct credential actually reflects the renewed term. If the certificate has already expired, use the restoration route that applies to the length of the lapse rather than assuming an ordinary renewal payment will restore it.
