The current combined barbering-and-cosmetology application fee is $60. Application fees are nonrefundable.
School route
Submit documentation showing graduation from a Board-approved or nationally accredited program with at least 1,550 hours.
Apprenticeship route

Iowa Salon and Establishment License Requirements
A salon, barbershop or other regulated establishment needs its own license. Iowa’s current application fee for an establishment is $80, and DIAL recommends submitting the application no less than 30 days before the anticipated opening date.
Location-specific
An establishment license is issued for a specific location. Changing the location cancels the existing license and requires a new application.
Ownership changes
A change in ownership cancels the existing establishment license and requires a new application. Iowa also requires reporting a sale to the Board within the applicable timeframe.
Mobile establishments
Iowa permits qualifying readily movable establishments, but they must operate under the specific licensing, address, sanitation and transportation requirements.
