How to Get a Colorado Cosmetology License for the First Time

Before you travel
- Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early.
- Your ID name must match the approved test application.

- A temporary government paper ID can be accepted when presented with the expired ID.

Colorado Practical Exam Packing List: PSI Does Not Publish One Fixed Supply List
The current PSI practical guide requires candidates to bring the equipment, products and supplies needed to complete the tested topic areas, but explicitly says there is no official fixed PSI supply list.

- An unmarked closable supply kit.
- Suggested kit size no larger than about 24″ × 24″ × 24″.
- Two disposal containers: one marked “Single-use” and one marked “Multi-use.”
- Low-odor or odorless monomer where used.
- Properly labeled disinfectant and chemical products.
- Tools and products needed for every practical topic.
Do not bring or rely on
- Aerosol products; PSI prohibits aerosols in the testing area.
- Unlabeled disinfectant containers.
- Monomer that does not meet the low-odor/odorless requirement.
- A marketplace kit simply because the seller calls it “official Colorado State Board.”
- Old school packing sheets without comparing them to the current PSI guide.

DORA states cosmetologist licenses expire on April 30, with the exact year depending on issuance timing. The current rule also provides a 60-day grace period following expiration during which a licensee may continue providing services.

Does Colorado Require CE for Cosmetology Renewal?
Current ordinary DORA renewal guidance does not list a standard continuing-education-hour requirement for routine active cosmetologist renewal.
Continuing education becomes important in longer-lapsed reinstatement cases because Colorado permits approved CE as one way to demonstrate competency.

Colorado Salon, Suite, Home and Mobile Shop Registration
A personal cosmetology license and a business/shop registration are separate requirements. Colorado’s current rule gives several useful examples that many licensing articles omit.
