Nebraska Cosmetology License: 1,800 Hours, NIC Exam, Fees, Renewal & Lookup
Nebraska cosmetologist licensing is administered through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The standard examination route requires you to meet the age and education rules, complete at least 1,800 hours of qualifying cosmetology training, submit the state application first, and pass the NIC written examination administered through PSI.
Nebraska does not currently require a hands-on practical examination for the initial cosmetologist license. This guide also covers 2026 fees, continuing education, reciprocity, temporary licenses, expired credentials, public verification and salon licensing.
Nebraska Cosmetology License Requirements: Quick Answer
To qualify for a Nebraska cosmetologist license by examination, you must be at least 17 by the beginning date of the examination, have formal education equivalent to a U.S. high-school education, complete at least 1,800 hours through a qualifying cosmetology school or apprentice salon, submit the DHHS license application, and successfully complete the approved examination.

What Does a Nebraska Cosmetologist License Cover?
Nebraska describes a cosmetologist as a practitioner who works with hair, skin and nails. The cosmetologist credential is broader than an esthetician or nail-technician credential and requires the appropriate license before full, unsupervised cosmetology practice.
Full cosmetology practice
A Nebraska cosmetologist may perform services within the state’s defined cosmetology scope once properly licensed and working in an appropriate licensed establishment or facility.
Salon and individual licenses
An active personal license does not automatically license the salon. Nebraska separately regulates cosmetology establishments, schools and other licensed business locations.
Activities DHHS lists as not requiring a cosmetology license
Nebraska DHHS says a cosmetology license is not required solely to perform airbrush tanning, apply makeup, pierce earlobes, manicure or pedicure the natural nail, braid natural hair, thread hair for removal, or sell cosmetics and beauty or nail products.
Nebraska Cosmetologist Requirements in 2026
| Requirement | Nebraska rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Age | At least 17 by the beginning date of the examination | Do not schedule around an exam date when you will still be under 17. |
| General education | Formal education equivalent to a U.S. high-school education | Prepare the diploma, GED or equivalent evidence requested by DHHS. |
| Cosmetology training | At least 1,800 hours | Training can come from a qualifying cosmetology school or apprentice salon. |
| Examination | Approved competency examination | DHHS currently requires the NIC written examination administered through PSI. |
| Practical exam | No hands-on practical exam | The NIC written exam satisfies Nebraska’s current initial cosmetology examination route. |
| English reading ability | Must be sufficient for safe practice | Nebraska requires the examination to be administered in English. |
| Practice location | Appropriate licensed establishment or facility | Verify the salon separately before relying on the individual’s license alone. |
How to Get a Nebraska Cosmetology License by Examination
The order matters. Nebraska requires the complete license application before DHHS authorizes you to register for the NIC written examination.
Meet the age and education requirements
Be at least 17 by the examination start date and have formal education equivalent to a U.S. high-school education.
Complete 1,800 hours of training
Graduate from a qualifying cosmetology school or apprentice salon program and obtain the training documentation requested by DHHS.
Prepare the application documents
Gather your education records, cosmetology diploma, identity or lawful-presence documents, other-license information and any required conviction documentation.
Submit the Nebraska DHHS application first
Do not independently schedule the NIC exam before DHHS accepts your license application. The Department reviews the application before issuing examination authorization.
Receive your PSI authorization
After DHHS accepts the application, it sends examination authorization and the PSI registration information needed to schedule the computer-based test.
Pass the NIC written examination
Nebraska currently uses the national NIC written exam. There is no hands-on practical exam for this initial cosmetologist route.
Wait for DHHS licensing action
PSI provides same-day results to the applicant, but the official score is also sent to DHHS. The Department says it generally notifies applicants of licensure or denial within 5–10 days after receiving the official score report.
Verify your issued license
Search Nebraska’s public License Information System and confirm the credential is issued with the expected status before beginning full, unsupervised licensed practice.
Documents to Prepare for the Nebraska Application
| Document or information | Why it matters | Common issue |
|---|---|---|
| High-school diploma, GED or equivalent | Supports the education requirement | Submitting a document that does not clearly show completion |
| Cosmetology school diploma | Supports completion of cosmetology training | Name differs from the application |
| School or apprentice training record | Confirms required hours | Hours cannot be matched to the applicant |
| Lawful-presence documentation | Used for Nebraska credentialing requirements where applicable | Expired or incomplete evidence |
| Other professional licenses | Needed when you hold or held credentials elsewhere | Failure to disclose a prior license |
| Conviction documentation | Required when applicable to application disclosures | Assuming every traffic-court conviction is irrelevant |
| Translated foreign documents | Needed when source documents are not in English | Applicant translates the document personally or fails to include the original-language version |
Nebraska Cosmetology NIC Written Exam
NIC written exam
Nebraska requires the national NIC written examination for initial cosmetology licensure.
PSI
PSI administers the computer-based examination at Nebraska sites and other testing locations in the United States.
No hands-on test
DHHS explicitly states there is no hands-on practical examination for the current initial Nebraska cosmetology route.
Exam sequence
You must first submit a complete Nebraska license application. Once DHHS accepts it, the Department sends the authorization needed to register with PSI.
Nebraska requires the exam to be administered in English. PSI gives candidates same-day results, while the official result is sent directly to DHHS.
If you do not pass, DHHS says you can retake the examination using the current authorization letter while it remains valid. You must pay the testing fee each time you retake the computer-based exam.

Initial-license fee waivers
The current Nebraska application includes fee-waiver routes for qualifying young workers under age 26, qualifying low-income applicants and qualifying military-family applicants.
Nebraska Temporary Cosmetology License
Nebraska may issue a temporary practitioner license to a graduate of a Nebraska cosmetology or esthetics school who is waiting to take the national examination. The temporary licensee must work under supervision.
Application first
DHHS says you cannot apply for the temporary credential before submitting the completed examination application.
Not unrestricted practice
A temporary credential has supervision and expiration conditions. Verify the issued status before beginning work.
The current fee schedule lists a $25 temporary cosmetologist fee, subject to any qualifying initial-license fee waiver.
Nebraska Cosmetology License Renewal in 2026
Nebraska cosmetologist licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years. That makes December 31, 2026 the regular current-cycle expiration date.
Safe renewal sequence
Verify your current credential
Check the public Nebraska License Information System for your license number, active status and expiration date.
Complete applicable continuing education
Ordinary renewal requires eight hours during the applicable period, with at least four hours involving the skills or services of the profession.
Wait for the correct renewal route
Use the DHHS renewal page to confirm when cosmetology becomes available rather than attempting a transaction through another profession.
Keep proof and verify the new term
After renewal is processed, recheck the public record for the expected new status and expiration date.
Nebraska Cosmetology Continuing Education
Nebraska requires eight hours of continuing education for ordinary cosmetologist renewal. At least four of those hours must involve learning how to perform the skills or services of cosmetology. All eight hours may be earned through qualifying professional-skills or services education.
8 hours
Complete the applicable continuing education within the renewal period unless an exemption or waiver applies.
At least 4 hours
At least half of the requirement must involve learning how to perform the skills or services of the profession.
Free Nebraska jurisprudence option
Nebraska offers a free, 50-question, open-book online jurisprudence examination covering cosmetology and esthetics practice. DHHS says successful completion counts for two hours of continuing education.
Expired or Inactive Nebraska Cosmetology License
If a Nebraska cosmetologist license expires, ordinary renewal no longer provides active practice authority. DHHS says a person cannot perform licensed activity until the credential is reissued or reinstated.
Expired license
Stop licensed practice and use the profession-specific reinstatement process. Practicing after expiration can result in a $10-per-day administrative penalty up to $1,000, in addition to other disciplinary action that may apply.
Inactive status
Nebraska allows a licensee to place a credential on inactive status before expiration without a renewal fee, but an inactive license does not authorize licensed practice.
Reinstatement requirements
DHHS says a cosmetologist reinstating from expired or inactive status must complete eight hours of continuing education within the prior 24 months, submit the completed reinstatement application and pay the applicable fee.
The cosmetology FAQ currently lists the cosmetologist reinstatement amount as $153. Use the amount and instructions printed on the current reinstatement form when you file.
DHHS also states that an examination is not ordinarily required just to reinstate a cosmetologist license.
Moving to Nebraska With an Out-of-State Cosmetology License
Nebraska calls the out-of-state licensing route licensure by reciprocity. It is not an automatic license transfer.
Hold the appropriate current license
For cosmetologist reciprocity, Nebraska law requires a current cosmetologist credential in another jurisdiction.
Review your discipline history
The Nebraska reciprocity statute requires proof that the out-of-state credential has not been disciplined or revoked. Contact DHHS before assuming reciprocity applies if your record includes prior discipline.
Confirm the examination basis
If the other jurisdiction did not require an examination for licensure, Nebraska law can require the applicant to take the Nebraska examination.
Document education and qualifying experience
Nebraska evaluates school or apprentice hours and can recognize qualifying recent work experience as hour-equivalents under the reciprocity statute.
Wait for Nebraska issuance
An out-of-state license does not automatically authorize Nebraska practice. Verify the Nebraska credential before beginning work.
Foreign-Trained Cosmetologists
An applicant trained outside the United States uses Nebraska’s foreign-trained cosmetology application rather than the ordinary examination or reciprocity form.
Nebraska law generally does not allow a foreign-trained applicant to bypass the state examination through waiver alone. The applicant must document training or qualifying professional experience in the form DHHS accepts and complete the Nebraska licensing examination.
Translation requirements matter
When documents are not in English, DHHS application instructions require the original-language document and an English translation. The applicant may not translate their own records.
How to Verify a Nebraska Cosmetology License
Nebraska’s public License Information System is the fastest way to verify an individual cosmetologist. Use the separate Business/Service Search for a cosmetology salon.
Verify the practitioner
Search by first name, last name, license number, license status, profession, license type, city, county or ZIP code.
Verify the salon
Search by business name, owner, license number, business/service type, license type, city, county or ZIP code.
Best search method
Use the license number when you have it. If searching by name, start with fewer fields and narrow only when necessary. Nebraska’s search also supports an asterisk to widen certain name searches.
Open the matching record and confirm the profession, license type, status and current identifying information. A matching name alone is not enough.
Nebraska Salon Licensing Is Separate
Nebraska law requires licensed cosmetology practitioners to work in an appropriate licensed establishment or facility unless a specific exception applies. A cosmetologist’s active license does not automatically prove the salon is properly licensed.
Moving a salon
DHHS says a salon license cannot simply be transferred to a new location. A new application is required for the new premises.
Expired salon license
DHHS says an expired salon license cannot be reinstated. The owner must apply for and obtain a new salon license before operation resumes.
Free License Lookup vs. Formal Nebraska Verification
For ordinary consumer, employer or status checking, use Nebraska’s free public lookup. A formal verification or certification is generally needed only when another licensing agency specifically requires an official document.
| Service | Fee | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Public License Information System | Free | Online searchable state licensing information |
| Formal verification | $5 | Name, profession, license number, expiration date and DHHS staff signature |
| Formal certification | $25 | Broader licensing information, examination information when available, discipline information when applicable and Nebraska DHHS seal |
