Indiana Cosmetology License: Requirements, Exam, Application & Renewal
Indiana cosmetologists are licensed through the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners and the Professional Licensing Agency. A standard applicant must be at least 17, have completed tenth grade or its equivalent, complete the required cosmetology education or qualifying apprenticeship route, satisfy the examination requirements and submit the state application.
Indiana Cosmetology License: Fast Answer
For the standard Indiana cosmetologist route, you must be at least 17 years old, have successfully completed the 10th grade or equivalent, complete an Indiana-recognized cosmetology education route, satisfy the required practical and written examinations, then apply through Indiana’s licensing system with the required documents and current $40 nonrefundable application fee.
Indiana Cosmetology License Requirements
Indiana’s cosmetologist licensing law sets several separate requirements. Meeting the training-hour requirement alone does not mean a license has been issued. The education, examination and application requirements must all be completed through the appropriate route.
Current Indiana law states that a cosmetologist applicant must be at least 17 years old.
The applicant must have successfully completed the tenth grade or received the equivalent of a tenth-grade education.
The standard school route requires completion of the applicable Indiana beauty-culture education requirement for cosmetology.
The applicant must satisfy Indiana’s required practical demonstration and written licensing examination requirements.
Indiana Cosmetology Training Hours and Apprenticeship Route
Indiana currently lists 1,500 hours as the minimum cosmetology education requirement for an applicant using the beauty-culture school route.
| Indiana credential | Current education minimum | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetologist | 1,500 hours | The credential covered by this guide. |
| Barber | 1,500 hours | A separate Indiana professional license. |
| Esthetician | 700 hours | Different training requirement and scope. |
| Manicurist | 450 hours | Separate nail-services credential. |
| Electrologist | 300 hours | Requires the underlying license conditions described by PLA. |
| Beauty Culture Instructor | 500 hours | Instructor applicants must also meet the applicable primary-license requirements. |
Registered apprenticeship option
Indiana law also recognizes completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program to practice cosmetology. PLA’s current examination-application instructions tell apprenticeship applicants to provide their apprentice number and upload a certificate of completion.
Indiana Cosmetology Exam Requirements
One of the most common sources of confusion is the practical examination. Indiana law requires a final practical demonstration, but the practical component is not described by PLA as a second PSI state licensing test.
Indiana law provides for a final practical demonstration administered by the beauty-culture school as part of the licensing framework.
PLA’s current examination-applicant instructions require the applicant to pass the written examination through PSI and upload the examination pass notice with the application.
How to Apply for an Indiana Cosmetology License
Confirm that you meet the preliminary requirements
Make sure you satisfy the current cosmetologist age, tenth-grade education and professional-training requirements before starting the application.
Complete beauty-culture school or the qualifying apprenticeship route
School applicants need the required cosmetology education. Registered-apprenticeship applicants should have the apprentice information and completion documentation required by PLA.
Complete the examination requirements
Satisfy the practical-demonstration requirement and pass the written licensing examination through the current PSI process.
Create or sign in to MyLicense One
Indiana now uses MyLicense One for licensing transactions. Sign in through your personal Access Indiana account.
Select the initial application
Choose the cosmetology profession and the correct initial-license route rather than starting an unrelated barbering, esthetics, manicuring or salon application.
Upload the required supporting documents
Provide the applicable education or apprenticeship evidence, PSI examination pass notice, name-change documentation and any required explanation or court documents for positive-response questions.
Pay the application fee
The current individual beauty-culture application fee is $40. PLA states that application fees are nonrefundable.
Monitor your application checklist
After submission, return to MyLicense One to see whether documents are pending, reviewed or still needed.
Documents to Prepare Before Applying
The exact upload list depends on your application answers and licensing route. Preparing the records that apply to you before opening the application can reduce avoidable delays.
An Indiana-approved beauty-culture school completes the applicable education certification, which the applicant uploads as part of the application process.
Applicants using the Department of Labor registered-apprenticeship route should prepare the apprentice number and certificate of completion.
PLA requires examination applicants to provide proof that the written licensing examination was passed.
If the name on supporting records differs from the application name, PLA may require documentation such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree.
If you answer yes to an application disclosure question, PLA instructs applicants to provide a detailed written explanation and supporting records when required.
For a reportable matter, include the supporting disposition or other court records requested by the application rather than submitting only a short personal statement.
Indiana Cosmetology License Fees
Indiana’s current beauty-culture fee schedule lists the following state charges. Examination-provider charges, document fees or other transaction costs can be separate.
| Transaction | Current state fee | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Initial individual beauty-culture application | $40 | Standard initial cosmetologist application through PLA. |
| Reciprocity application | $40 | For a qualifying applicant already licensed in another jurisdiction. |
| Provisional application | $40 | For qualifying applicants from jurisdictions that do not issue the applicable license. |
| Individual beauty-culture renewal | $40 | Ordinary professional renewal under the current fee schedule. |
| Individual professional reinstatement | $80 | Current PLA amount for the more-than-three-year expired-license route. |
How to Track an Indiana Cosmetology Application
After submitting through MyLicense One, use the application record in the Activity panel rather than filing a second application because you have not yet received the license.
- Sign back in to MyLicense One.
- Open the submitted application from the Activity panel.
- Review the licensing checklist.
- Check which requirements show as received, reviewed or still outstanding.
- If PLA requests another record, use the available Upload Additional Documentation action.
- Do not create a duplicate cosmetology application unless the state specifically directs you to do so.
Indiana Cosmetology License Renewal
Indiana’s current rule sets a $40 cosmetologist renewal fee every four years. This is an important correction to older sources that still describe a two-year Indiana cosmetology renewal cycle.
The current individual cosmetologist renewal fee is $40.
The current administrative rule states that the Board collects the cosmetologist renewal fee every four years.
PLA says renewal notices are generally sent approximately 90 days before expiration.
MyLicense One also states that the Renew License action is generally available approximately 90 days before a PLA license expires and may remain available for licenses expired up to three years, although profession-specific exceptions can apply.
Routine continuing education
Indiana’s current ordinary cosmetology renewal information does not list routine continuing-education hours as a standard renewal requirement. Do not purchase a private “mandatory Indiana cosmetology CE” package without first comparing that claim with current Board requirements and your own license record.
For the full expired-license and MyLicense One workflow, use the Indiana Cosmetology License Renewal guide.
Expired Indiana Cosmetology License
The correct route depends on how long the license has been expired. Do not automatically submit another initial application.
MyLicense One may still provide an existing-license renewal action. Check the live state record and the transaction displayed in your account.
PLA directs beauty-culture professionals to the reinstatement process. The current individual professional reinstatement fee is $80.
Expired five years or more
PLA states that the Board considers passing the written licensing examination appropriate remediation when a beauty-culture professional license has been expired for five years or more. The applicant should first submit the reinstatement application, then follow the eligibility letter for examination registration.
Indiana Cosmetology License Reciprocity
If you already hold a valid cosmetology license from another state or country, Indiana provides a reciprocity route when the issuing jurisdiction’s requirements are substantially equal to Indiana’s requirements.
PLA currently explains that, for cosmetology, a shortfall in education hours may sometimes be addressed through licensed practice. For an applicant who completed at least 1,000 hours of education, one year of licensed practice may count as 100 hours of education when the Board evaluates substantial equivalency.
What a reciprocity applicant normally needs
- The current $40 application fee.
- Required application disclosures and supporting records.
- Legal name-change documentation when applicable.
- Official verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions.
- An English translation for applicable foreign records.
- Evidence that the prior jurisdiction’s education and examination standards satisfy Indiana’s reciprocity rules or can be made substantially equal under the permitted experience calculation.
Indiana Provisional Cosmetologist License
Indiana’s provisional route is different from reciprocity. It applies when an applicant comes from a jurisdiction that does not issue the applicable beauty-culture license but the Board determines that the applicant has sufficient training or experience.
A provisional cosmetologist must work under the supervision of an Indiana-licensed cosmetologist. PLA requires documentation of the applicant’s training or experience and the Indiana supervision arrangement.
Verify an Indiana Cosmetology License
Indiana PLA provides a free public Search & Verify service. The state describes it as an original source that is continuously updated in real time.
Use the license number when available or search the person’s legal name, then confirm the credential type, status and expiration information.
A personal cosmetology license and a beauty-culture salon license are separate state records. Verify both when the situation requires both credentials.

Indiana Cosmetology Rule Changes Effective in 2026
The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency announced that updated State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners administrative rules became effective on July 22, 2026. That makes older private guides and outdated school handouts particularly risky for current licensing decisions.
Indiana also announced a separate July 1, 2026 statutory change expanding certain services within the esthetician scope of practice. Do not automatically treat every esthetician-specific change as a change to the cosmetologist license.
