Find the Right Missouri COSBAR Action Before You Pay
Use this guide to search a Missouri cosmetology or barber license, register for MOPRO, prepare for the 2027 renewal cycle, reinstate an expired record, understand continuing-education rules and follow the correct exam or establishment process.
This website is not the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. MOPRO and Missouri Professional Registration control official applications, payments, license status, examination approval and Board decisions.
Missouri License and Renewal Answer for 2026
There is no ordinary statewide Missouri COSBAR renewal deadline in 2026. Barbering, cosmetology, instructor, establishment and school records expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next normal deadline is September 30, 2027.
A record still expired from September 30, 2025 should not wait for the 2027 cycle. Search the current public status and use reinstatement, reactivation or reinstatement-by-examination based on the license type and length of the lapse.
Missouri COSBAR Task Helper
This static helper does not connect to MOPRO or read a government record. It identifies the safest official starting route.
COSBAR, MOPRO, Professional Registration and DCI Explained
These names appear together in Missouri search results, but each one performs a different job.
| Term | What it means | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| COSBAR | Common short name for the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. | License eligibility, rules, exams, reinstatement, establishments, schools and discipline. |
| MOPRO | Missouri’s private online professional-licensing account system. | Applications, available renewals, late renewals, payments, duplicate licenses and account changes. |
| MOPRO License Search | The public verification database. | Checking a practitioner, instructor, establishment or school without signing in. |
| Professional Registration | Missouri division that administers occupational licensing boards. | Board directories, official forms, statutes, rules and agency information. |
| DCI | Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance. | The parent department; day-to-day cosmetology and barber licensing remains with COSBAR and MOPRO. |
| Prov | The testing company currently identified by the Board. | Scheduling an approved examination and reading the current candidate bulletin. |
Missouri Cosmetology License Lookup
Use the public MOPRO search before hiring, renting a chair, enrolling in school, renewing, filing a complaint or assuming a printed license remains valid. Public listings are updated nightly rather than continuously.
Choose the public search
Do not sign in to another person’s MOPRO account. The public search is available to consumers, employers and license holders.
Select the correct record type
An individual operator, barber, instructor, establishment and school are separate records.
Start with the license number
Use the complete number when available. Otherwise search the legal name currently held by the Board.
Open the complete result
Check the license class, status, expiration date and public disciplinary information where displayed.
Search the business separately
An active personal license does not prove that the salon, shop, school or rental station is licensed.
Save dated proof
Save or print the official result when employment, booth rental, insurance, school enrollment or a complaint depends on current status.
No-result and old-status troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No license found | Too many search fields, nickname, prior legal name, wrong category or older record. | Reduce the fields, try the complete license number and search prior legal names. |
| Old expiration date | Transaction is still processing or the nightly public update has not occurred. | Keep the receipt, wait for processing and search again after the next database update. |
| Individual active, salon missing | The worker and establishment have separate credentials. | Search by the business name, address or establishment-license number. |
| Different name displayed | The legal-name change has not been completed in MOPRO. | Use the current Board-record name and submit the name-change service separately. |
| Payment completed but still expired | The wrong record was paid, required documents are missing or processing is incomplete. | Compare the receipt’s license number with the public record and contact COSBAR if they differ. |
Missouri Cosmetology and Barber License Categories
Choose the exact classification before applying, testing, searching or renewing. Missouri does not use “cosmetologist” as one interchangeable label for every beauty-service scope.
| License category | Official classification | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Class CA | Hairdressing and manicuring. | Assuming every Missouri cosmetology record has the same service scope. |
| Class CH | Hairdresser. | Searching or applying under Class CA when the approved path is hairdresser. |
| Class E | Esthetician. | Renewing an establishment or general operator record instead of Class E. |
| Class MO | Manicurist. | Reading “MO” as a portal abbreviation rather than the license class. |
| Barber | Barber credential administered by the combined Board. | Using a cosmetology examination or renewal route. |
| Instructor | Authority to instruct within the applicable licensed field. | Renewing the operator credential but forgetting the separate instructor record. |
| Crossover | Combined barbering and cosmetology authority under the crossover rules. | Paying an ordinary $60 renewal when the crossover fee is higher. |
| Establishment | Salon, barbershop, rental station or another regulated business location. | Believing the owner’s individual license also licenses the premises. |
Initial school and apprenticeship hours
| Missouri path | School route | Apprenticeship route | Before enrollment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology | 1,500 private-school hours or 1,220 public vocational/technical hours | 3,000 hours | Confirm whether the program leads to the exact Class CA or other category you need. |
| Esthetics | 750 hours | 1,500 hours | Verify that the school and program are Board approved. |
| Manicuring | 400 hours | 800 hours | Confirm the Class MO outcome and required exam path. |
| Barbering | 1,000 hours | 2,000 hours | Confirm the apprentice supervisor, hours and record-reporting process. |
Missouri Cosmetology License Renewal Online
Missouri COSBAR records expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next ordinary cycle ends September 30, 2027, but licensees should prepare their MOPRO access and contact details during 2026.
Prepare, but do not invent an open renewal
Confirm the public status, recover MOPRO access and wait for the Board’s official 2027 renewal announcement.
Use reinstatement now
A 2025-expired record is generally still within the two-year ordinary reinstatement period during 2026.
Examination may be required
Long-expired operator, barber or instructor records can require a reinstatement-by-examination route.
2026 preparation checklist
Verify every license record
Search personal, instructor, crossover and establishment credentials separately.
Register or recover MOPRO
Make sure the email on file is accessible and the license is attached to the correct account.
Update legal and contact information
Correct the name, mailing address, email and telephone number before the 2027 renewal period opens.
Check instructor education separately
Ordinary operators and barbers have no general CE total, but cosmetology instructors have an eight-hour seminar requirement.
Watch for current-cycle document instructions
The 2025 operator cycle required a 2×2 passport-style photograph. Confirm whether the Board repeats or changes that instruction for 2027.
Verify the final MOPRO amount
Check the license type, renewal fee, possible online processing charge and any separate instructor or establishment record before paying.
Save proof and recheck lookup
Keep the confirmation and receipt, then verify the updated public expiration after processing and the nightly database update.
Missouri Cosmetology Continuing Education Rules
“No CE required” is accurate for ordinary barber and cosmetology-operator renewal, but it is not accurate for every instructor record.
| License situation | Current CE or seminar rule | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Class CA, CH, E or MO operator | No general renewal CE-hour total is listed. | Renew the eligible record and pay the current fee. |
| Ordinary barber | No general renewal CE-hour total is listed. | Follow the barber renewal or reinstatement rule that matches the status. |
| Cosmetology instructor | Eight hours at a Board-approved seminar or workshop during the two years immediately before renewal. | Keep proof of attendance and verify both the operator and instructor records in MOPRO. |
| Virtual instructor program | Can qualify when the program is contemporaneously and simultaneously visually and verbally interactive. | Confirm Board approval before paying or attending. |
| Out-of-state instructor seminar | May qualify when approved by the other state’s board, at least eight hours and supported by the required sworn statement. | Obtain approval evidence and attendance documents before renewal. |
| Barber instructor | Do not automatically apply the cosmetology-instructor seminar rule. | Confirm current Chapter 6 requirements and the MOPRO record with COSBAR. |
| Disciplinary order or special condition | A Board order may impose separate education or compliance requirements. | Follow the order rather than the ordinary renewal summary. |
Before paying for instructor education
- Confirm the event is approved for the applicable Board and renewal period.
- Confirm the total approved hours.
- Verify whether the event is live, virtual or out of state.
- Ask how attendance will be documented.
- Keep the agenda, certificate and payment record.
Avoid misleading course claims
- Do not buy general renewal CE for an ordinary operator based only on advertising.
- Do not assume an optional sanitation course is a statewide renewal requirement.
- Do not count an unapproved webinar as instructor-seminar credit.
- Do not renew only the operator record when an instructor license is also due.
Current Missouri COSBAR Fees From the Official PDF
The current fee rule, effective November 30, 2024, replaced older fee figures still repeated by many search results. All Board fees are nonrefundable.
Barber, cosmetology operator or ordinary instructor record.
Current amount for qualifying delinquent barber, operator or instructor reinstatement.
Applicable individual barber, operator or instructor inactive-status fee.
| License or service | Current amount | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Barber renewal | $60 | Ordinary reinstatement is $90 while the applicable route remains available. |
| Cosmetology operator renewal | $60 | Applies to the ordinary operator record rather than crossover or establishment. |
| Instructor renewal | $60 | Verify whether the underlying operator record also requires a separate renewal. |
| Barber or cosmetology establishment renewal | $75 | Cosmetology-establishment reinstatement is listed at $105. |
| Crossover operator renewal | $120 | Crossover operator reinstatement is $150. |
| Crossover instructor renewal | $120 | Crossover instructor reinstatement is $150. |
| Crossover establishment renewal | $150 | Crossover establishment reinstatement is $180. |
| Barber or cosmetology school renewal | $500 | Crossover-school renewal is $850. |
| Reciprocity | $100 | Official license verification and category comparison may also be required. |
| Exam-score endorsement | $100 | Use only when that application route fits the prior examination record. |
| Duplicate license | $10 | Confirm the record is current before ordering a replacement. |
| Licensure, training or score certification | $10 | Choose the certification type requested by the receiving state or organization. |
| Hair-braiding registration | $20 | This registration does not equal a full cosmetology license. |
| Returned or dishonored payment | $25 | A failed payment can also leave the license transaction incomplete. |
Expired, Inactive and Reinstated Missouri Licenses
The correct action depends on whether the record is current, voluntarily inactive, expired less than two years or expired long enough to require examination.
| Status | Meaning | Next step | Can you practice? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current | The credential is active through the listed expiration date. | Prepare for the 2027 cycle and keep contact information current. | Within the scope and any public restrictions shown. |
| Inactive | The holder chose inactive status and is not authorized for ordinary practice. | Submit the reactivation service and applicable current renewal requirements. | No, until the public record returns to active. |
| Expired under 2 years | Ordinary reinstatement may remain available. | Use the correct reinstatement application and current $90 amount for an ordinary record. | No, until reinstatement is completed. |
| Cosmetology operator over 2 years | Ordinary reinstatement is no longer sufficient. | Use reinstatement by the practical examination and provide the required application material. | No. |
| Barber over 2 years | The barber reinstatement-by-examination rule applies. | Ask the Board which examination portions apply to the length of the lapse. | No. |
| Instructor over 2 years | Re-examination can be required rather than ordinary reinstatement. | Confirm instructor and underlying operator requirements with COSBAR. | No instruction under the expired credential. |
| Suspended or disciplined | A Board order controls the credential. | Follow the order; renewal payment alone may not remove the restriction. | Only as the order permits. |
Reinstatement document check
- Exact legal name and current contact information.
- License number, classification and current public status.
- Date the credential expired.
- Correct reinstatement or reinstatement-by-examination form.
- Current fee and accepted payment method.
- Required photographs when the form or rule asks for them.
- Exam approval and current candidate instructions when examination is required.
- Proof of instructor seminar when applicable.
MOPRO License Registration and Login Help
MOPRO began serving Missouri licensees in 2025. Registration is most reliable when the Board already has the correct email address and identifying details.
Register correctly
- Use the email currently held by the licensing Board.
- Enter the legal name and identifying details exactly as shown on the application or license.
- If you hold both an individual and business license, start with Individual License.
- If you are a first-time applicant, choose the matching license type and first-time-license option.
- Keep access to the email used for security and password recovery.
Avoid duplicate-account problems
- Do not register repeatedly because a license is missing.
- Do not switch between personal and business registration without checking the Board instructions.
- Do not use a nickname or new name that has not been added to the Board record.
- Do not confuse public MOPRO License Search with the private MOPRO login.
- Do not pay again after an error until checking for a receipt or pending transaction.
Login and account troubleshooting
| Problem | Check first | Contact route |
|---|---|---|
| Registration email not received | Spam folder and whether the Board has the same email you entered. | COSBAR for email-record correction. |
| Security code fails | Correct license number, legal name, email and record type. | Send COSBAR the current license number and email address. |
| Individual and business licenses | Register or claim the individual license first. | Use MOPRO support if the business record still does not attach. |
| Forgot password | Use the official recovery flow and check the registered email. | MOPRO technical support. |
| License missing from account | Verify that it appears in the public search with the same legal name and number. | MOPRO support for linking; COSBAR if the underlying record is wrong. |
| Renewal button missing | Whether the renewal period is open and whether the license is current, expired, inactive or restricted. | COSBAR for renewal eligibility. |
| Mobile page will not continue | Disable pop-up blocking for the official site or use an updated desktop browser. | MOPRO technical support with the exact error. |
| Payment appears frozen | Email, receipt history and bank/card activity. | MOPRO support before submitting another payment. |
Missouri State Board Barber and Cosmetology Tests
Missouri’s Board currently identifies Prov as the examination provider. Apply through the correct Missouri route and wait for eligibility before relying on a testing date or paying for an exam product.
Identify the exact examination category
Confirm whether the application is for barber, Class CA, CH, E, MO, instructor, crossover, reciprocity or reinstatement.
Submit the Missouri application
Use MOPRO or the current Examination/Temporary Permit, reciprocity, score-endorsement or reinstatement-by-examination form.
Wait for eligibility approval
School completion, apprenticeship hours or another-state licensure does not by itself confirm that Prov can schedule the Missouri examination.
Open the current candidate information bulletin
Use the current Missouri listing on Prov’s test-information page. Do not rely on an old school handout or a prior testing vendor.
Schedule only the approved portions
The approval and candidate bulletin control whether theory, practical, written-practical or multiple portions are required.
Prepare the exact identity and supply rules
Confirm the accepted original photo identification, legal-name match, arrival time, practical materials and prohibited items.
Take the Missouri State Law Test when directed
The official online State Law Test allows one hour from submission of candidate information to complete and submit the answers.
Verify license issuance after passing
A passing score is not the same as an active Missouri license. Check for remaining application, fee or documentation requirements.
How to Read the Current Prov Candidate Bulletin
The candidate bulletin is not merely a scheduling link. It contains the rules that decide whether a candidate is admitted, what must be brought and what happens after a cancellation or failed attempt.
| Bulletin section | What to extract | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exam title | Exact Missouri license category and examination portion. | Prevents scheduling the wrong profession or test type. |
| Authorization | Whether preapproval is required and when eligibility expires. | An unapproved candidate may be unable to schedule or test. |
| Current fee | Price for each required portion and accepted payment methods. | Exam-vendor fees are separate from Board licensing fees. |
| Accepted identification | Original valid government photo-ID requirements and exact-name rules. | Prov does not accept ordinary paper, temporary, copied or electronic identification substitutes. |
| Check-in | Arrival time, test-center address and late-arrival policy. | Late arrival or absence can forfeit the exam fee. |
| Practical supplies | Mannequin/model rules, kit contents, labels, disinfection and setup requirements. | Old packing lists can omit or misstate required supplies. |
| Prohibited items | Phones, watches, wireless devices, notes and other restricted material. | Possession or use can end the examination. |
| Cancellation | Current notice period, rescheduling method and fee-forfeiture rule. | The Missouri bulletin controls even when general Prov pages describe a standard policy. |
| Accommodations | Request form, evidence and submission deadline. | Requests generally need approval before scheduling. |
| Results and retakes | Score delivery, failed-portion rules and reauthorization steps. | A candidate should not repay or reapply until the correct retake route is known. |
Exam-day document folder
- Current eligibility or scheduling confirmation.
- Accepted original government photo ID.
- Candidate bulletin saved offline or printed.
- Exact testing address and arrival time.
- Approved accommodation notice when applicable.
- Required practical supplies checked against the current bulletin.
Do not use as final authority
- An old PSI or prior-vendor handbook.
- A social-media packing list.
- A commercial “exact Missouri questions” claim.
- A generic national passing-score claim.
- A previous candidate’s exam fee or test-center address.
- A school document with no current revision date.
Missouri COSBAR Forms, Documents and Processing
The Board’s forms page currently estimates approximately three to five business days for paper applications after receipt in the COSBAR office and three to five business days for MOPRO submissions. Mailing and central-accounting time can extend paper processing.
| Your situation | Form or service to consider | Before submitting |
|---|---|---|
| Expired less than two years | Operator/Instructor Reinstatement | Confirm the public status and exact current fee. |
| Long-expired license | Reinstatement by Examination | Ask which examination portions apply. |
| Voluntarily inactive | Reactivate Inactive License | Do not resume practice until the record is active. |
| First Missouri examination | Examination/Temporary Permit | Use the correct Class CA, CH, E, MO or barber category. |
| Out-of-state license | Reciprocity or Exam Score Endorsement | Request official verification and training or score records early. |
| Lost credential | Duplicate Operator or Establishment License | Confirm the public record is current. |
| Another state needs proof | Certification or Affidavit of Licensure | Ask the receiving state whether it needs licensure, training or exam-score certification. |
| Criminal-history concern | Pre-Licensure Petition | Use it before investing heavily in school when eligibility is uncertain. |
| Cannot use online renewal | Paper Renewal or PIN Request | Confirm that the renewal period is open and enter the correct license number. |
| Military applicant | Military Temporary License or applicable military service | Review eligibility and required supporting documents. |
Submission checklist
- Use the current form revision.
- Complete every required field.
- Sign and notarize where required.
- Include the correct fee and accepted payment form.
- Attach photographs, verification or affidavits requested by that form.
- Keep a full copy and delivery or MOPRO confirmation.
Mail-only situations
- A paper application requiring a fee must be mailed.
- A notarized paper application must be mailed.
- Fee or notarized applications cannot be completed by ordinary email or fax.
- Do not send cash.
- Do not assume emailing a photograph completes a paper application.
Missouri Barber and Cosmetology Rules and Regulations
Start with the current combined-board rules in Division 2085. Older search results may still surface prior separate barber or cosmetology divisions.

| Violations and hearings | Chapter 14 | Prohibited conduct, discipline and hearing procedures. |
Missouri Salon, Barbershop and Rental-Station Licensing
A personal license and an establishment license solve different legal requirements. Verify both before signing a lease, opening a suite or renting an independent chair.
Confirm the license category
Ask whether the space needs a cosmetology establishment, barber establishment, crossover establishment or separate rental-station credential.
Prepare the business record
Gather ownership, legal business name, physical address, floor layout and required equipment details.
Prepare for inspection
Review current sanitation, equipment, spacing, storage and license-display requirements.
Barbershop rule examples worth checking
- Cleanable floor and facility requirements.
- Posted sanitation rules.
- Required shampoo facilities based on chair count.
- Chair-spacing requirements.
- Dust-tight storage for each chair or workstation.
- Current personal licenses for workers.
- Separate licensing for independently rented space where required.
Out-of-State Licenses and Pre-Licensure Eligibility Help
Reciprocity, examination-score endorsement, transfer of training hours and a first Missouri license are different application paths.
| Your situation | Possible route | Prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Active license in another state | Reciprocity | Official license verification, legal-name proof, license category and training or examination evidence. |
| Passed comparable examination elsewhere | Exam Score Endorsement | Official score report and proof the examination and category qualify. |
| Training completed outside Missouri | Out-of-State Transfer Hours affidavit or examination application | School transcript, hour breakdown and official affidavit. |
| Criminal-history concern before school | Fresh Start Act Pre-Licensure Petition | Court documents, disposition, rehabilitation evidence and the proposed license category. |
| Military spouse or service member | Applicable military temporary or expedited service | Orders, relationship or service evidence and current out-of-state credential information. |
Missouri Cosmetology and Barber Complaint Checklist
Use the Board complaint process for possible licensing, sanitation, school, establishment or regulated-practice violations—not for a MOPRO password problem.
Collect before filing
- Legal or business name of the person, salon, shop or school.
- License number or saved MOPRO lookup result.
- Date, time and physical location.
- Chronological description of what occurred.
- Receipts, contracts, advertisements, messages or photographs.
- Witness names and contact information where relevant.
- A clear explanation of the suspected licensing or safety issue.
Avoid weak submissions
- Do not provide only a social-media username.
- Do not omit the date or location.
- Do not crop screenshots so the sender and context disappear.
- Do not use the complaint form to request renewal or login help.
- Do not assume the Board can award private damages or act as your attorney.

Missouri Cosmetology and Barber Board FAQ
What is the official Missouri cosmetology board called?
The official agency is the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. It is administered through the Missouri Division of Professional Registration within the Department of Commerce and Insurance.
How do I complete a Missouri cosmetology license lookup?
Use the public MOPRO License Search. Search by the complete license number or legal name, open the correct individual or business record and verify the license class, status and expiration date.
When is Missouri cosmetology license renewal due?
Missouri COSBAR licenses expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. The next ordinary statewide renewal deadline is September 30, 2027.
How much is Missouri barber or cosmetology renewal?
The current fee rule lists $60 for ordinary barber, cosmetology-operator and instructor renewal. Ordinary qualifying delinquent reinstatement is $90.
Does Missouri require continuing education for cosmetology renewal?
Ordinary cosmetology operators and barbers do not have a general renewal CE-hour requirement. Missouri cosmetology instructors must complete eight hours at a Board-approved seminar or workshop during the two years immediately before renewal.
What is MOPRO?
MOPRO is Missouri’s online professional-licensing portal. It supports applications, available renewals, late renewals, payments, duplicate licenses and account-information changes.
Why is my license missing from MOPRO?
The account may use a different email, the license may be linked to another profile, the legal name may not match or the business record may need to be claimed after the individual license. Verify the public record and contact MOPRO support rather than creating repeated accounts.
Can I work with an expired Missouri license?
No. Missouri’s Board states that an expired license holder is not authorized to practice or present themselves as licensed until the applicable renewal or reinstatement requirements and fees are completed.

Final Missouri License Checklist
- Search the public MOPRO record and confirm the exact license number, class, status and expiration date.
- Use the private MOPRO login only for your own account, application, payment or record change.
- Remember that the next ordinary statewide deadline is September 30, 2027—not September 2026.
- Use the current $60 ordinary renewal and $90 qualifying reinstatement amounts.
- Do not purchase general operator renewal CE; confirm the separate eight-hour rule for cosmetology instructors.
- Use reinstatement for a 2025-expired license and examination reinstatement when the lapse is too old for the ordinary route.
- Choose the correct Class CA, CH, E, MO, barber, instructor, crossover or establishment record.
- Use the current Missouri Prov candidate bulletin instead of an old packing list or fee screenshot.
- Mail paper applications that require a fee or notarization.
- Save every MOPRO confirmation, receipt, form copy, examination notice and official message.
- Wait for the public record to show valid authority before practicing, teaching, renting a station or opening an establishment.
