Cosmetologist versus specialist: a Florida cosmetologist generally does not need separate nail- or facial-specialist registrations for services already included within cosmetology scope. A specialist registration has a narrower service scope.

How to Get a Florida Cosmetology License

Confirm age and education eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old or have received a high school diploma. Individual DBPR applications also require a Social Security number.

Choose a Florida cosmetology program

Verify that the school can certify Florida education and examination eligibility. Review tuition, kit costs, attendance, transfer credit, refund rules and transcript procedures before enrolling.

Complete the qualifying hours

Complete 1,200 hours, or at least 1,000 hours when the school certifies that you have met Florida’s minimum competency standards for early examination.

Complete the initial HIV/AIDS course

The initial course must be Board approved, at least four hours long and completed within the two years before the application is submitted.

Florida uses computer-based Written Theory and Written Clinical examinations. The current candidate booklet does not require a hands-on practical examination.

Cancel or reschedule

Contact Pearson VUE at least two days before the appointment. Late cancellation or absence can forfeit examination fees.

Excused absence

Submit written verification and supporting evidence to Pearson VUE no later than four days after the scheduled examination.

Failed-exam review

Request a review within 21 days of the examination. Only the most recent failed examination may be reviewed.

Testing accommodations: submit the official special-accommodation application before each examination. Do not wait until the appointment day to request disability-related arrangements.

Can You Work While a Florida Application Is Pending?

The answer depends on the application type. “Application submitted” does not create one universal temporary license.

Personal credentials are divided into Group 1 and Group 2. Group 2 renews in even-numbered years and is the active 2026 renewal group.

Why DBPR pages show both $40 and $45: the normal fee structure includes a $40 renewal fee plus a $5 unlicensed-activity assessment. The official Group 2 renewal insert states that the $5 assessment is waived for this renewal period, making the ordinary on-time 2026 total $40.

Active renewal requires 10 hours of Board-approved continuing education. The subjects are allocated rather than treated as one unrestricted 10-hour course.

Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Florida

Florida does not automatically transfer another state’s license and does not issue a temporary license. The most common qualifying route is licensure by endorsement.

An applicant currently licensed as a cosmetologist in another state may qualify without taking the Florida examination.

Foreign cosmetology licenses do not use ordinary COSMO 4-B endorsement. Florida-school evaluation and examination may be required.
