Nevada State Board of Cosmetology: License, Renewal, Exams & Contact Help
Use this guide to verify a Nevada cosmetology professional or salon, renew a license, understand current fees and late penalties, prepare for Nevada testing, transfer an out-of-state license, file a consumer complaint or contact the correct Board office.
The official authority is the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology. Board-of-Cosmetology.org is an independent information website and cannot issue, renew, suspend, verify or change a Nevada license.
Quick Answer: What Does the Nevada Cosmetology Board Handle?
The Nevada State Board of Cosmetology licenses beauty professionals and cosmetological establishments, administers or authorizes licensing examinations, manages renewals and reciprocity, registers certain beauty occupations, inspects establishments, receives consumer complaints and enforces Nevada’s cosmetology laws and regulations under NRS and NAC Chapter 644A.
For most users, the correct first step is one of five actions: verify a license, renew an existing credential, submit an application, prepare for testing or contact the Board about a record that cannot be resolved online.

Nevada Cosmetology License Lookup: Search the Person and Salon Separately
The Board’s public lookup displays individual and salon data in real time. For an individual, you can search by first name, last name or license number. For a salon, the lookup supports salon name, license number and address.
Individual search
Confirm the legal name, license type, license number, status and expiration. A record appearing in search does not by itself prove that the license is active.
Salon search
Check the salon separately for license type, number, status, expiration, address and ownership details shown by the Board.
The Board also warns that its public lookup does not include every violation history, citation or compliance review. For formal published outcomes, check the Board Orders page in addition to the current license record.

Nevada Cosmetology License Renewal
Nevada offers two-year and four-year renewal terms for cosmetologists and several other individual license categories. The current Board fee schedule lists $70 for two years and $140 for four years. Renewal is not approved instantly just because payment succeeds: Board staff review the submission and may email you if something needs correction.
Verify the license record
Confirm your license number, category, legal name, status and exact expiration date in the Board’s public lookup.
Complete required infection-control education
Before renewal, covered individual licensees—including cosmetologists—must complete at least four hours of Board-approved instruction relating to infection control and prevention.
Prepare a new photograph
Each renewal requires a new passport-quality photo taken within the previous 90 days, with a plain white background and no hat, sunglasses, filter or other obstruction.
Resolve balances and name changes first
Outstanding Board fees, fines or balances must be paid. If your legal name changed, send qualifying proof to the Board for approval before submitting the renewal.
Submit the correct renewal
Use the official individual-renewal route for your personal license. Establishment, makeup-artist and threader renewals use separate routes.
Wait for Board review and verify the new record
A successful payment message confirms submission, not final approval. Monitor email for deficiencies and verify the renewed status after processing.
Late fee
$20 per month or fraction of a month, beginning the day after expiration.
License delivery
After an individual renewal is approved, the Board sends the license by standard USPS mail unless pickup was arranged before renewal.
Expired 4+ years
Do not use ordinary renewal. The Board instructs these licensees to contact staff for restoration assistance.
Nevada Late-Renewal Planning Estimate
Nevada’s statutory late penalty is $20 for each month or fraction of a month after the renewal date. This calculator is only a planning estimate; your official Board account balance controls.
Current Nevada Cosmetology Board Fees
Application, testing, retesting, licensing, renewal, reciprocity and establishment transactions are separate. Confirm which action you are paying for before submitting a payment.

Choose the Correct Nevada Cosmetology Application
The Board separates its ordinary Individual Application from an Application for Review. Using the wrong route can delay testing or licensing.

|---|---|---|
| Nevada school graduate scheduling tests | Individual Application | School completion information and required application documents. |
| Active license in another state | Individual Application / reciprocity | Current license certification and Nevada law-test preparation. |

| Foreign training or license documents | Application for Review | Original records plus an approved English translation when required. |
| Felony conviction disclosure | Applicable licensing application plus additional documents | Follow the Board’s felony-document instructions before submission. |
Nevada Cosmetology Exams: Theory, State Law and Practical
The Nevada Board oversees three testing components: theory, Nevada state law and practical testing. Theory and law testing are offered through Pearson VUE after Board authorization. Practical testing depends on the applicant’s training route; Nevada school graduates take the practical exam at their licensed Nevada school.
Theory exam
For cosmetologists, the current Pearson handbook lists 100 scored items plus 20 pretest items, for 120 total items and a two-hour exam window.
Nevada law exam
25 questions, 30 minutes. The Board states that a 75% score is required to pass.
Practical exam
Nevada school graduates take the practical exam at their school. Board-office practical testing is used for certain approved applicants outside that route.

Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Nevada
Nevada calls this route reciprocity. The Board states that an applicant with an active license in another state may be eligible if Nevada’s requirements are met. The process includes verifying certification requirements, submitting the reciprocity application and passing the Nevada State Law Test before the Nevada license is issued.
Confirm the Nevada license category
Match your existing credential to Nevada cosmetology, hair design, esthetics, advanced esthetics, nail technology, hair braiding or instructor licensing.
Check certification requirements
Follow Nevada’s instructions for how your issuing jurisdiction must verify the current license.
Submit the reciprocity application
Use the Board’s Individual Application and provide the requested identity and licensing documents.
Pass the Nevada law exam
First-time Nevada professionals must satisfy the state’s law-test requirement.
Verify active Nevada status
Do not rely on an application receipt or out-of-state license alone. Confirm the Nevada record after approval.
Current reciprocity fee: $325 according to the Board fee schedule.
Consumer Complaints, Inspections and Board Orders
If you received or witnessed an unsafe, unsanitary or unlawful beauty-related service, the Board provides an online consumer complaint process. Compliance staff review whether the matter falls within Board jurisdiction, investigate qualifying complaints and may impose discipline when appropriate.
Before filing
- Verify the individual and salon licenses separately.
- Save names, dates, receipts, photographs and relevant communications.
- Describe what happened factually and identify the location.
- Use the Board’s complaint process for licensing, safety and sanitation issues within its jurisdiction.
Inspection types
The Board describes routine inspections, consumer-complaint inspections, compliance-review inspections and salon-opening inspections. A compliance review can follow a routine-inspection violation.

Nevada Cosmetology Schools and Apprenticeships
Before enrolling, verify that the school is currently licensed and that its approved programs include the credential you want. The Board’s live school list includes the school’s address, license status and programs offered.
School route
Use the official school list, confirm the approved program and ask the school how it submits student registration, completion records and practical-exam eligibility.
Apprenticeship route
The Board currently lists 3,200 apprenticeship hours for cosmetology. Monthly time cards are required, and licensing still requires the applicable theory, Nevada law and practical exams.
