Choose your situation. This helper only points you to the correct instructions; it does not perform a live license search, access Board records or submit a renewal.
MS Cosmetology License Lookup: What Is Currently Available
As of August 1, 2026, the official MSBCB navigation does not display a clearly identified public practitioner, instructor, establishment or school license-verification database. The Board’s page labeled “Search” searches its website and provides a contact form; it is not a live credential lookup.
Contact MSBCB directly
Provide the person’s legal name, registration number if known, license type and the salon, barber shop, school or city connected with the record.
Ask for current status
Ask whether the credential is active, inactive, delinquent, expired, suspended or otherwise restricted and whether the category covers the intended service.
Request certification
When another state, employer or credentialing organization needs formal verification, request MSBCB licensure certification. The current certification fee is $35.
Information to collect before contacting the Board
- Full legal name rather than a nickname or social-media name.
- Registration or license number, including any letters or leading zeros.
- Credential type: cosmetologist, barber, esthetician, nail technician or instructor.
- Business name and address when checking a salon, barber shop or school.
- The reason verification is needed and whether written certification is required.

Mississippi State Board Login and Online Practitioner Renewal
The MS.gov system is labeled the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Practitioner Licensing System. The sign-in page asks for three matching pieces of information.
Last name
Enter the last name associated with the existing Board record, not a new married name or nickname unless the Board has already updated it.
Last four of SSN
Enter only the requested final four digits. Use the official MS.gov page and never send Social Security information through an unofficial website.
Registration number
Use the registration number assigned to the practitioner record. Check old licenses, renewal notices and Board correspondence.
Online renewal steps
Confirm this is a practitioner renewal
The online portal is identified as a practitioner licensing system. Instructor, establishment, school, inactive-status and special expired-license actions may require a separate form.
Match the existing record
Enter the last name, last four Social Security number digits and registration number exactly as held by MSBCB.
Review the renewal information
Confirm the license category, mailing address, establishment affiliation, fee and any delinquent status before payment.
Save evidence
Keep the confirmation page, receipt, transaction reference and a copy of the updated credential or Board confirmation.
Verify completion
A payment receipt proves a transaction occurred; it does not by itself resolve a name mismatch, expired-license exception, disciplinary hold or missing requirement.
| Login problem | Likely reason | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Record is not found | Last name, SSN digits or registration number does not match the Board record. | Check old documents, then call MSBCB rather than repeatedly guessing sensitive information. |
| Name recently changed | The portal still has the prior legal name. | Submit the official information-update request and ask which surname to use during renewal. |
| Expired for several years | Ordinary online renewal may not be the correct route. | Check the special 2026 or January 2027 expired-license rules before paying. |
| Technical error | Browser, session, payment or MS.gov service issue. | Use the MS.gov Help Portal. Policy and eligibility questions must go to MSBCB. |

Mississippi License Renewal, Delinquent Status and Expired-License Help
Mississippi licenses are renewed biennially, but an active practitioner, instructor, inactive credential and long-expired license do not use the same process.
| License situation | Current rule | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Current practitioner | Complete the biennial practitioner renewal and pay the applicable $50 fee. | Use the online practitioner system when the record is eligible. |
| Current instructor | Complete the instructor renewal, pay $80 and submit required CE proof. | Use the official instructor renewal form rather than the practitioner-only login. |
| Expired 60 days–3 years | Pay applicable renewal fees plus the $50 delinquent-renewal penalty. | Confirm every unpaid period and outstanding fine with MSBCB before payment. |
| Expired 3+ years | The general rule requires passing the Chapter 6 written examination, unless a special exception applies. | Ask MSBCB whether the 2026 or January 2027 long-term-license exception applies. |
| Inactive | Use the inactive-status or removal-of-inactive-status form. Current inactive-status fee is $15. | Do not practice until the Board confirms the credential is active where required. |
| Age 70+ | An active, good-standing licensee aged 70 or older does not pay the renewal fee. | Still file the biennial renewal form; late fees may apply to a late renewal. |

10 years held • up to 10 years expiredA licensee who held the Mississippi license for at least 10 years and whose license has not been expired more than 10 years may renew without retaking the written exam.

75 scaled score
A score of at least 75 on the written examination is required for instructor licensure approval.

Schedule online
Appointments may be made up to seven days before the desired test date, subject to availability.

| Third failed attempt | Complete remedial education before taking the written examination again. | Complete 10%–15% of the course’s theory hours in the failed subject areas and submit proof to MSBCB. |
| After remedial education | One additional written-exam attempt is allowed after proof is accepted. | If unsuccessful again, complete another remedial-education cycle before another attempt. |
Mississippi Practical Exam: Verify Before Buying a Kit
People still search for a Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology practical exam because older manuals, school instructions and archived web pages described practical testing. Current 2026 official material needs to be read differently.
Before buying practical supplies
- Read the current approval letter issued for your exact application.
- Check the official examination page for newly published manuals.
- Ask your licensed school which assessment your current class has been approved to take.
- Call MSBCB and ask whether your credential and application date require any hands-on assessment.
Do not rely on
- An old practical handbook without a current effective date.
- A commercial kit labeled “Mississippi State Board Kit” without Board confirmation.
- A school video recorded under an earlier examination process.
- A search-result snippet that contradicts the current approval letter or temporary rules.
Mississippi Reciprocity, UROLA, Military and Student Permits
| Route | Who it helps | Permit or exam rule | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reciprocity | A person holding a comparable license from another state. | An exam may be required unless a qualifying nationally developed written/theory exam and reciprocal-state condition are accepted. | MSBCB must approve the application and category match. |
| UROLA | A qualifying out-of-state licensee who establishes Mississippi residency. | Temporary practice permit is valid 365 days; the Mississippi Law and Sanitation exam must be passed within one year. | Permit is nontransferable and cannot be renewed or extended. Reapplication does not create another permit. |
| Military route | Qualifying active military members, spouses or dependents located in Mississippi. | A temporary practice permit may be valid for 120 days. | The Board issues or denies the license within the 120-day application period. |
| Student permit | A student practitioner or instructor who successfully completed the required training course. | Valid for six months and nonrenewable. | Direct same-scope supervision is required; one active licensee may supervise no more than two student-permit holders. |
| Demonstrator permit | A nonlicensee performing a limited product or tool demonstration. | Valid for one year; current fee is $10. | It does not authorize ordinary paid cosmetology or barbering practice. |
Reciprocity preparation checklist
- Identify the exact Mississippi credential matching the out-of-state scope.
- Obtain license verification or good-standing documentation from every relevant jurisdiction.
- Prepare education, training-hour and examination records when requested.
- Check whether the home state and license category appear on the current reciprocity chart.
- Do not begin working until the Mississippi license or valid temporary permit authorizes it.
Mississippi Salon, Barber Shop and School Licensing
A practitioner license authorizes an individual within the permitted scope. It does not automatically license the salon, barber shop, suite, school or other business location.
Confirm location eligibility
Check local zoning, water, restroom, floor-plan, ownership and facility requirements before committing to a property.
Prepare equipment and sanitation
Use the Board’s establishment-equipment list and current health and safety rules rather than a generic salon checklist.
Wait for required approval
Keep the establishment record separate from practitioner licenses and verify that every worker holds the correct current credential.
Important temporary health and safety rules
- Provide hot and cold potable running water and an appropriate restroom with soap.
- Wash hands with soap and water before providing service to each client.
- Store clean towels and linens in a clean, closed cabinet or container.
- Discard items that cannot be properly disinfected after one client.
- Clean and disinfect tools, implements and work surfaces after each client.
- Use an appropriately labeled, covered wet-disinfectant container for total immersion where required.
- Keep daily and weekly whirlpool foot-spa cleaning records for six months.
- Do not double-dip waxing or other disposable applicators.

Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology FAQs
Does Mississippi have an online cosmetology license lookup?
As of August 1, 2026, the official MSBCB navigation does not show a clearly identified public practitioner or salon verification database. The page called “Search” is a website search and contact form. Contact MSBCB with the legal name, registration number, credential type and business information, or request formal licensure certification when written verification is needed.
What is the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology phone number?
The Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering phone number is 601-359-1820. Use it for licensing policy, status, examination approval, renewal eligibility, forms and expired-license questions.
What is the official Mississippi cosmetology board website?
The official website is msbcb.ms.gov. Use it for current rules, forms, fees, continuing education, examination resources, Board announcements and final instructions.
What information is required for Mississippi online practitioner renewal login?
The official MS.gov sign-in page asks for the practitioner’s last name, last four digits of the Social Security number and registration number. These details must match the existing Board record.
Can every Mississippi cosmetology license be renewed online?
The online system is identified as the practitioner licensing system. Instructor, establishment, school, inactive-status and long-expired-license actions may require separate official forms or Board approval rather than ordinary practitioner online renewal.
Does Mississippi require a practical cosmetology examination in 2026?
The temporary rules effective July 2026 describe a written licensure examination, and the current examination page lists theory and Law & Sanitation resources rather than a current practical-exam handbook. Candidates should follow their current Board approval letter and confirm with MSBCB before buying a practical kit or relying on an older manual.
What score is required to pass the Mississippi cosmetology examination?
A practitioner needs at least a 70 scaled score on the written examination. An instructor needs at least a 75 scaled score. A passing score may be used for licensure for up to three years.
Can a long-expired Mississippi cosmetology license be renewed without retesting?
Through December 31, 2026, a person who held the license for at least 10 years and whose license has not been expired more than 10 years may qualify to renew without retaking the written exam. Beginning January 1, 2027, the expiration limit narrows to five years and late fees apply. Confirm individual eligibility with MSBCB.
How many continuing education hours do Mississippi instructors need?
An instructor must submit 12 Board-approved hours biennially, including at least five hours in methods of teaching. Certificates must be retained for two years, and excess hours do not carry forward.
Where is the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology office?
The physical office is listed at 239 N. Lamar Street, Suite 301, Jackson, MS 39201. The mailing address is PO Box 55689, Jackson, MS 39296-5689. Confirm appointments and current parking instructions before visiting.
Final Mississippi License Checklist
- Identify whether the record is a practitioner, instructor, establishment or school license.
- Contact MSBCB for status verification because a dedicated public cosmetology lookup was not verified.
- Use the practitioner online portal only when the credential is eligible for that route.
- Check the special December 31, 2026 expired-license option before it closes.
- Use current written-exam rules and do not buy an old practical kit without Board confirmation.
- Complete missing exam-application items before the 90-day retention period ends.
- Keep CE certificates for two years and complete the one-time courses before July 1, 2029.
- Report address and establishment-affiliation changes in writing within 30 days.
- Save copies of forms, approvals, receipts, exam letters and Board correspondence.
- Do not work until the license or valid permit officially authorizes the activity.
