Virginia Cosmetology License Renewal Through DPOR
A Virginia Chapter 20 license expires two years from the last day of the month in which it was issued. Use the expiration shown in your DPOR record rather than relying on a general internet deadline.

The rule amount for individual cosmetologist renewal is $120. Effective July 1, 2026, certain DPOR transactions can also include a separate technology fee.

Keep the receipt, reference number and any confirmation email. Do not submit another payment because the public record has not updated immediately.

Expired Virginia License: Renewal, Reinstatement or New Application?
The correct route depends on how much time has passed since expiration. Do not pay a standard renewal amount when the record already requires reinstatement.

Renew promptly
The reinstatement fee has not yet been triggered under the 30-day rule, but you may not continue practicing on an expired license.
Reinstatement

How to Apply for a Virginia Cosmetology License
Most delays come from the wrong application route, incomplete school verification, unreadable documents, legal-name mismatches or paying an examination charge without completing the Board application requirements.

Virginia Cosmetology Practical Exam Checklist
The current Candidate Information Bulletin controls the practical exam. Do not buy or pack a kit from an old video, social-media list or another state’s examination.
Verify before exam day
- Your name on the Prov account exactly matches accepted identification.
- You have the current CIB for Virginia and the correct profession.
- Your kit includes every current supply and required label.
- Containers and disinfectants meet the current manufacturer-label rule.
- You know the test location, arrival instructions and prohibited items.
- You understand rescheduling, cancellation, late and no-show rules.

Virginia Temporary Cosmetology License
Virginia’s temporary license is not a general work permit for anyone waiting on an application. It is limited to an eligible initial applicant and requires direct supervision.
Temporary license facts

- The holder must work under direct supervision.
- The supervising person normally needs a current license in the same scope.
- The temporary license remains valid for 90 days.

Transfer an Out-of-State Cosmetology License to Virginia
Virginia calls the standard transfer route licensure by endorsement. An out-of-state license does not authorize practice in Virginia while the application is being reviewed.
